Are you kidding? Between regular network programming the the Superbowl, I'd watch the superbowl, and I'm not a sports fan.

I didn't watch it either. I ended up watching re-runs of ABC sitcoms.

My coworker and I were talking about this today.. he said it has to do with cheap entertainment, and the current state of the economy.
In his words "next years ratings, even bigger".

I don't think anyone with a brain cares fark-all about "katrina" stuff some 4.5 years later.. after it devastated some ghettos and sparked a crimewave and upped and the murder rate in Houston..there's a reason some areas are still undeveloped, a few solid reasons.
If you were watching for the "katrina factor".. eat a bullet.
If you were watching for the "nice to see a loser team finally win it" then that makes sense.
If you were watching it for "Manning face" .. that too makes sense.
If you think 'who dat' is a phrase you need to say out loud.. I hope your English teacher drives a train into your family reunion.

OK, I'm just gonna turn in my man card up front before I ask this question: is the Super Bowl shown on more than one channel? Do they factor that in when they tally up the ratings? 'Cause I gotta say, scoring about 500,000 more viewers than the finale of MASH is not that impressive when the number of households with televisions has grown by over 30 million in the last 30 years. You'd think that record would be broken decade after decade as the population grew. Then again, the audience pie has been whacked up into more and thinner slices ever since cable came along.

Why was this Super Bowl the most-watched TV program in history?

Maybe because everyone thought it was going to be a great game for once?

2010-02-09 11:59:50 AM
I think the commericals SUCKED this year. At least the game was a good one.

2010-02-09 12:00:14 PM
This time next year people won't even remember who played in this Super Bowl.

Saints fans not included.

I have no statistics to back that, but my personal anecdotal experience says THIS.

Think I actually paid more attention to the game than the commercials this year, which is pretty farking strange for me. And yeah, the fact that we couldn't go much of anywhere helped narrow the viewing choices.

There are a lot of Colts and Saints fans in America. Also, there are a lot of people that wanted to see Peyton Choke. Some were just hoping for shots of Kim K.

I didn't like that Betty White ad. Don't get me wrong, I loves me some Betty White, but I object to the premise that Betty White wouldn't own your ass at flag football, then kick you in the nuts when other people weren't looking.

I thought it was a good game. Normally I don't watch the Superbowl other than having it on in the background while I mess around on Fark or playing videogames.

2010-02-09 12:07:21 PM
Well, forgetting the fact that none of the other networks wasted a first-run show against the Superbowl, look at the timing: 6:30 EST or 3:30 PST - what else is there on at those times? Hell, on the West Coast you could watch the game and still have time to go out afterward!!

I'd have been interested if Betty White had a wardrobe malfunction...

Soooo laaamme......

Maybe it was the most watched because THERE ARE MORE VIEWERS than ever. This is why I hate the misuse of statistics.

You know, when there were 10 TV's, 10 was the most (TC's) that could watch a given program. How many TVs are there now? This would be much more useful if it was presented in percentages.

I used to like watching the Super Bowl for the commercials... then I realised how much I hate commercials and how sad of a person you must be to look forward to said commercials.

My take on the Super Bowl adds was: Men in their underpants are the high point of modern humor, the green movement is becoming slightly militaristic, and Budweiser just needs to stop.

Thank you. I thought I was alone in this world. The same commercials you are sick to death of now (if you are among the few without tivo) were last year's superbowl commercials. Hat's off to the marketing genius who convinced people with no interest in sports to watch the superbowl for commercials.

Have they really dumbed down America to the point that we get excited about watching tv commercials? Why would anyone go to their computer and type in a web address to watch a TV commercial? Watching a bunch of fat guys in their underwear is supposed to get me to buy somthing? I just don't get it.

Yes! In fact it DOES get shattered every few years !!!! imagine that !!!!! Every year there are more births, deaths, illness... it's called population growth.

I think the point would be more accurately depicted by using percentages. "What percentage of the available viewing audience watched?"

I didn't watch it. Football is about as exciting as beer, to me.

That is to say: Not At All.

I know. I don't get my official Man Club card. Boo hoo. I've never been threatened by the fact that so many Stupid Man Things™ don't appeal to me. I'm just not interested in watching a bunch of exceptionally dumb, yet overpaid men in tights having homoerotic pile-ups while fighting to get a ball to the end of a field.

I also don't watch reality shows.

You see, I have this policy: I won't spend any more time observing abysmally stupid people than I have to, and I certainly won't pay to do it under any circumstances.

So far, I'm fine with being an outsider to Man Culture™ because of this policy.

When was the Super Bowl on?

2010-02-09 01:39:07 PM
I went to a Super Bowl party for the food and company - the game was just something to watch when the conversations died down.

Man, I really hated this year's crop of commercials. I'm not a big football fan but can follow the game, and for once the football was the highlight.

I mean, last year wasn't great, but it at least had a few truly great and/or memorable commercials. The only memorable commercial this year was the Betty White Snickers ad, and that wasn't even good. At best, it wasted Betty White's considerable talents on a commercial that would have been equally as effective with any random elderly lady. Why bring in Betty White (and Abe Vigoda for that matter?)

There was nothing this year even close to being on the level of Pepsi's MacGruber PepSuber ad, Bud Light's ad with Conan O'Brien, or Doritos' Crystal Ball commercial, my personal top three from last year's game.

Last year, we also saw the debut of the hilarious ad campaign for Hulu ("Because we're aliens, and that's how we roll") and Cash4Gold.com go way over expectations with Ed McMahon and MC Hammer, and those are just the ones at the top of the food chain. Commercials that barely got noticed last year would have been funnier and more eye-catching than any of this year's so-called "top" commercials.

"Gone With the Wind" ???

What decade do you think M*A*S*H was on in?

To be fair, M*A*S*H ended in 1983. That was really just the beginning of widespread access to VCRs. Prior to that, if you wanted to watch a movie like "Gone With The Wind", you had two choices:

1. Wait until a local TV station broadcast it.
2. Go to a theater that played older movie.

I remember seeing Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea in a movie theater when I was a lad in the early 1970's, even though it was first released in 1954.

2010-02-09 01:45:55 PM
I could have sworn the Betty White ad aired before the Tebow one.

2010-02-09 01:50:12 PM
Also why did GM stop running that suicidal robot ad? Seems even more appropriate.
