Side point sort-of... I've always been curious what these numbers really mean. First of all, apparently they don't count people watching in bars and the like? That seems pretty stupid, because that's a lot of people for an event like this. You know how many tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of people didn't get counted in Louisiana then?

And do you have to watch the whole game, or if you watch for a quarter are you counted?

Why would Detroit be rooting for the Los Angeles Lions? They have their own team... the Detroit Vikings. Personally, I'm a London Jaguars fan.

It would be great for Toronto to host a Super Bowl in the Skydome and the halftime show could have Rush performing.

I am not impressed that more Americans watched this Super Bowl as compared to MASH. There are a lot more people in the US in 2010 than in 1983. If the numbers are a percent of the population, that is different, but to say 105M people watched in 2010 vs MASH's 103 in 1983, I say big deal.

As has been mentioned, there are also many more channels just on the TV, plus the greater variety of entertainment possibilities.

Further, I can tell you quite a lot of people were watching it on sites like Justin, StickCam, etc.

Its impossible to quantify that, but on basis of the 4 Channels vs Wtfever now, I'd definately say this is an accomplishment and it shouldn't be understated.

The fact that this is the first program to top MASH in 27 years is definitely a big deal.

Why not last years SuperBowl? Or American Idol? Or...whatever.

Cynical people are boring.

2010-02-09 06:33:17 PM
I sort of count for that, got the last 3 minutes of the game only. Had to drive 5 hours cross-country on SuperBowl Sunday, could have strangled that prof.

But the Grey Cup was way better, even if farking Montreal won. Not t mention the World juniors, even if America won.

Dammit.

2010-02-09 07:05:32 PM
I'm not trying to be cynical. My point is simply that there is approx 100 million more people in the USA now than 1983. Last years Superbowl was watched by about 99 million people, by the way. Obviously the Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event and I certainly enjoyed watching it. I agree the number of channels to pick now vs then is an issue too, although I bet there was 185 channels of absolute crap on Sunday night to compete with the SB.
it is cool and an achievement? yes, but don't forget to look at the real data. Sort of like comparing box office receipts. (Avatar vs ET, etc)
/Sad that football is over and I'll be waiting for the NHL playoffs now.

Huh, interesting. I was at parties for each one, but friends told me that the pub was pretty busy for Grey Cup, but an utter gong show for Super Bowl. Oh well, I dig both of them :D.

Ladies and Gents, say hello to your TORONTO BILLS!

Also, I watched the Superbowl and the greatest travesty ever is that a) I missed arguably the best hockey game of the year and b) I didn't get to see any of those fine, fine American commercials.

downstairs: Side point sort-of... I've always been curious what these numbers really mean. First of all, apparently they don't count people watching in bars and the like? That seems pretty stupid, because that's a lot of people for an event like this. You know how many tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of people didn't get counted in Louisiana then?

Public displays of the game are supposed to be disclosed to the local affiliates. They're also supposed to pay a license fee to the affiliate and the NFL. You can do statistical analysis on the audience based on the expected capacities of those public venues. It's not exact, but close enough to satisfy the league, network, and affiliates. The only reason they take numbers, of course, is so they can sell spots.

And do you have to watch the whole game, or if you watch for a quarter are you counted?

No, you don't have to watch the entire game, and, yes, you're counted. And in a diary-based system, you're supposed to write down the exact times you were watching. In an automated system, if you agree to participate in the ratings, you're supposed to turn off your cable box or TV when you're not actually watching it.

The metrics are based on the total number of viewers in any given hour, and the length of time spent watching. In many respects, the second metric is more important -- the longer you watched, the more likely you were to see a commercial.
