When you go to their non-mobe site there is an article citing a twin engine plane crash fatality.
"Yep, clipped that tree and crashed" he said.

Sounds like a planned "emergency" engine failure and landing. I had to do this while training in the cessna 172. No big deal. You have to do this to get your license.

A crash is a less than controlled landing as all planes land eventually. Landing on a non approved parcel of land is as BitOGristle said, part of getting the private license and lots of fun. Some people fly from non-approved parcels all the time. They are called private airstrips.

/Comes in handy for those clandestine package drops.

A simulated engine failure off-field landing is part of the FAA requirements but an actual landing isn't (unless it's arranged prior to the test).

The DE will allow you to recover at about 500 AGL and grade you on your planning decision making to pass.

Bit'O'Gristle: Sounds like a planned "emergency" engine failure and landing. I had to do this while training in the cessna 172. No big deal. You have to do this to get your license.

You don't practice all the way through landing off airport - just picking the site to land and making a proper approach to landing that will work to get you down to it safely. You get some willies when you get low enough and realize that the power lines nearby don't know you're practicing.

The bad news for all the busy bodies is this landing would very well be entirely legal if the pilot had the permission of the land owner. But the FAA will probably cite the pilot with the all-purpose "careless and reckless" if the voters keep up the noise.

In other news, the owners of cars involved in a multiple pile-up on Route 66 will be charged with illegally demolishing vehicles for the purpose of trading in scrap metal. All extraction and sale of scrap metal must by law be carried out in a licensed and secure facility; these drivers have been charged for conducting such trade without a scrap metal license.

///that is all.

So I used to fly slope soaring RC gliders from this cliff off Highway 1 just up from Santa Cruz all the time... Las Trancas Airport (new window) and a Google Maps View (new window)

If you look at the street view you'll see it's not much more than a strip of dirt, a small shack, with a windsock on top, sitting on top of a 300 foot cliff that happens to stick out a bit from the highway. I've -never- seen a plane land there.

I'm out flying a glider one afternoon, and a low wing twin engine Beechcraft flies by the cliff a few times literally at my eye level. I bring my glider down and step back from the runway. He wings it over circles around, makes his approach, actually drops down out of view below the cliff at the end of the runway... and then pops up at the last second to land perfectly dead center on the gravel.

They taxi up and stop, and the pilot pops out. The first thing I say to him is, "I don't know what kind of drugs you run, but I'm sure your customers are really satisfied with your service." He just laughed, he and his passenger grabbed a smoke, they hopped back in the Beech, didn't even bother to taxi, just put the brakes on, powered up the engines, got off the brakes and shot off the end of the cliff after rolling about 100 yards, off into the sunset over the ocean.

I'm a former private pilot, and I was blown away because I knew the skill that was involved in landing and taking off on that little narrow rutted 1500 foot dirt strip on the edge of a cliff.

I've never seen anybody even attempt to land there since.
