Young said the pill bottles go against the lessons of teaching children to say no to drugs.

actually, that is EXACTLY the message we've been sending to kids about the war on drugs - pills from the doctor are always ok and never question the nice man in the lab coat. buying drugs from the street corner is bad and gets you arrested for life.

"She said it was nothing but some mints; it was just something special for the kids, for the FCAT to mellow them out," Young said.
This cunning plan was surely thought the whole way through.

Remember kiddies, drugs are bad.

Just say no!

Now take your Effexor, Zoloft, Paxil, Bextra, Neurontin, Lipitor, Percocet, Oxycodone, Vioxx, Valium, Naproxen, Tramadol, Ambien, Morphine, Oxycontin, Celebrex, Prednisone, Celexa, Tylenol, Ultracet, Protonix, Soma, Atenolol, Prozac, Lisinopril, Lortab, Darvocet, Cipro, Codeine, Diazepam, Albuterol, Ritalin, Zetia, Prevacid, Viagra, Zyrtec, Plavix, Crestor, Prilosec, and Allegra.

Wash it down with some caffeine and you will feel all better.

I'm just curious to hear from fellow Farkers, young or old, who never took any kind of pills for behavioral things while in school.

I didn't. I survived.

I never did. As far as I know, I never knew anyone who did. I also didn't know any kid who would drop dead at the sight of a peanut. That seems to be a new occurrence as well.

Exactly. Only use drugs that pharma and gov can openly profit from.

Wasn't it George Carlin that stated, "Where do kids learn that drugs are OK? At the drugstore." Not an exact quote, but close enough.

I didn't, nor do I know anyone who did. About the closest thing to taking any type of drug were the few students who had asthma inhalers.

Not a one and I still don't. I am sure that they would try to load me up now though. I was always drawing in school. At the time they thought I was artistic. These days they would probably decide I had ADD and make me pop pills.

We didn't have pills when I went to school. If we were stressed they beat us with a paddle until we weren't stressed anymore, and we were damn glad to get it! Up hill! Both ways! In the snow! With onions on our belts! Our Lawns!

As much as I hate the coddled, overmedicated generation we're making, I am also very skeptical of this kind of crotchety, anecdotal "common sense".

The thing is, there were kids in our generation who had the same problems. But, left untreated, the severe ones just got in trouble all the time and often flunked out.

In my day...

ADHD = "disruptive"
Autistic = "weird"
Learning Disabled = "stupid"
Depressed = "freak"

We do rely too much on medications, and don't help kids enough to understand that they have to be self-reliant and resourceful. But I can also think of several kids I grew up with who could have turned out better with the right help.

Oh, and I have a cousin my age (39) who is deathly allergic to peanuts. I almost killed her with a Smartie when we were kids.

Eh, stupid idea on teachers part I feel. Children are awful impressionable and given the chance, surprisingly cunning. I don't think they need to be drawing the correlation between pills and any kind of positive reaction that early in their lives.

But really, this isn't a big deal, if it concerns the parent(s), just sit little johnny crotchfruit down and explain to him that pills are for adults and only to be taken when a doctor tells you to. (not to say everything the doctor tells you is legit) I am quite mistrusting of big pharm, we have WAAAAYYYYY too many pills out on the market.

Luxury! We'd get up two hours before we went to sleep, clean the lake, eat a lump of cold poison for breakfast, put a 26 hour day at the mine, pay the foreman for his time, and when we got home, our parents would kill us and dance about on our graves singing "Hallelujah"!

/Snark aside, never had pills. Never needed pills. Kind of want some pills (Medical research only, of course).

Same here. Although my mom did make me go to counseling because I didn't do my Calculus homework my senior year and wanted to go to a school she didn't like. Luckily, her insurance didn't cover the meds she wanted to put me on. After all that nonsense, I make more money at 22 then she does as a 20+ year teacher.

Well, those mints may look like pills, and you don't want to have kids equating pills with candy. A better idea is to crush the mints into a fine powder. Pixie Stix had the right idea - they even provided a straw!

Sandy Young walked into her grandson's fourth-grade classroom last Thursday and saw pill bottles on each students' desk. Her mind raced with questions and thoughts of disbelief.

Unfortunately, none of those thoughts and questions were actually intelligent ones. Fortunately, the administration is a bit more intelligent.

It concerns her that now someone might hand her grandson a pill bottle with drugs and he might think it's OK to consume its contents.

"We as parents and grandparents have to drill it into them that this is unacceptable and hope and pray that they don't accept drugs from someone else," Young said.

Maybe if you had honest, intelligent discussions with your child about drug abuse instead of just "drilling it into them" and "hoping and praying" for them, they would be smart enough to know the difference between mint candies and crack rocks.

You know, I made it through school 'alright' without medication and yet my younger siblings cannot "survive" or even "function" in school without it. Consequently, the school calls me ever time they act up and they cannot or will not want to do their job. Then, suddenly, they started doing their jobs, only because my Mother threatened to rip them a new one in court. (They suggested that she medicate both of them into a zombie-like state)

Back to the article, though, I feel like school systems are less apt to do their jobs and quick to recommend medication for children when actually they need help and don't know how to vocalize it or ask for it. (And yes, I have grown up in school systems where if you didn't get something, instead of changing the way it's presented, are quick to say that you're not equipped to handle it and put you in regular ed classes or remedial classes.) It's just easier to deal with them in a drug induced coma, and not have them learn a farking thing.

To farker parents: know your rights and especially know your child's rights when it comes to education. Also, don't be afraid to blow the whistle when the school system doesn't do what's necessary to make sure they do their job and medication should only be a last resort.

Strange...watch TV for an hour or pick up any print media and you'll see at least a half dozen drug ads. Boner pills, anxiety pills, pills that make you have one period a year, etc.

Yeah..say no to drugs, unless drug companies can make serious money off them, then it's okay.

This right here is truth. I am 32 years old, I was diagnosed ADD before it was a trend, and - more importantly - I actually HAVE it. About 2/3rds of the people I know personally who claim to be ADD aren't, it's not hard to recognize when you know what it feels like.

That being said, medication serves a purpose, ritalin helped me tremendously. However, so many of the kids that are being treated for ADD don't have it, so this culture of everything being a 'diagnosis' needs to go, but medications -do- have a place. We shouldn't forget that.

No drugs "way back then"... even kids with mental inablilites were not drugged. Probably had more to do with drugs not developed yet. Never lost any kids to death by allergy, either. Never lost any kids until high school, first it was vehicular, then came Nam. Hmmm... then came lots of street ...ummm... yeah... nevermind.
Have subbed in 3 different states, and can attest to overuse of "special" designation by lazy teachers(encouraged by administrators who know they get extra cash for special classes).
Also, no computers, yet. Lots of time outside running and screaming in the name of playing... hmmm maybe we were creating our own drugs with all that energy? :)
