So this means Saw 8 will be a reboot?

I'm sorry to say that I watched the first three on cable, pretty much because of

teenagethunder.files.wordpress.com

Then they killed her and the main bad guy off and the movies sucked anyway so I tuned out.

But if the pieces of crap are still making money, they'd be fools to end it now.

AWESOME!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to watch Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter and Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday.

stickmangrit: beat me to it...

Well, if you want something else to watch, there's always Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare...

... maybe even Highlander III: The Final Dimension?

Good... maybe it can take the torture porn genre with it on the way out... I never quite understood those films. I can tolerate some incredible things in real life, but could never get into these movies, always seemed like a copout for good story telling and better camera work. Though admittedly, they've been quite creative with the ways of killing...

I've never watched a Saw movie.

Is it worth watching at all?

I like horror movies, and that's the problem. I like horror movies. Saw doesn't seem like a horror movie.

I never saw any of the movies and I'm better for it.

The first Saw was kind of clever, but then the cleverness was not clever anymore or something.

The first one was unique and had an interesting premise. That's the only one I saw, never really cared for the series after that. It's worth a watch if you're a fan of the genre.

2010-02-09 12:54:46 AM
6 was really good..especially compared to 4 and 5. If you are into these types of films at all, it would be hard to not enjoy part 6.

The grosses will be back next year when Paranormal Activity 2 turns into the second coming of Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows. No way Lionsgate turns off the franchise. Besides, if they paid for a Saw VIII screenplay, they're gonna use it.

The first one is decent, but would have been better as a short film with the Danny Glover plotline cut out.

From the second one on, it's strictly torture porn, with elaborate traps set up to kill people in creative ways.

I didn't see seven Saws, see? I missed the first one, and figured I wouldn't be able to follow the plot of the others.

Did Han shoot first?

If you've ever studied the Crusades or Inquisition and know what we humans did to other humans, Saw movies won't shock you at all.

All i have to ask, why put it in 3d.

It breaks the continuality of the look of the first 6.

I watched about 20 minutes of the first one, then had to stop. I'm not bothered by gore, but I absolutely cannot stomach torture.

In case you haven't noticed, Hollywood's gotten a hard-on for 3D lately. Don't worry, it'll pass in a year or so.

Likewise.

Others might get something out of those movies.

Saw3D...I will be there!

With any imagination they will use the depth 3d gives to create some kind of traps that wouldn't work as well in 2d.

I'm thinking something where a person has their legs sticking out into the audience(via 3d). Then when the trap goes off, the legs get cut off and it looks like they are going to drop off into your lap!

I don't think anyone is interested in the integrity of the series; if it ever had any to begin with. Saw 7 might as well be Jason vs. Ernest

I'll only go if there are real legs dropping into my lap.

If the gore is going to be that realistic, and I have to pay that much for a ticket, they better go all the f*cking way.

Try the first, see if you like it. It was the best of the series as far as I'm concerned.

I'd say that the premise for the Saw films is better than the execution, but after 6 movies, that's probably just a sign that I didn't get the premise.

The reality is that it is torture porn, and poorly conceived torture porn at that. At times there are hints of a broader story with a coherent link between episodes, but those are just rushed in to justify a new round of ridiculous violence.

2010-02-09 02:28:35 AM
You know, I'm all for pushing horror films to their limit. If anything, we need more franchises for exploitation that don't simply turn into lending their name for crappy horror films that were made on the cheap for sale and distribution in Asia. But it takes a special kind of film series to continue after the person responsible for it died at the end of the third and fourth ones. Come on, the series was wanting to end for a while and the money kept pushing them over and over again.

As for torture porn...it's not really much of a thing. It's all screams and squibs. It's not enjoyable at all, and it's good to see it ending.

2010-02-09 02:56:39 AM
I just saw the first one tonight, it has some actors I like (Mmm... Carey Elwes and two cuties from LOST).

Not bad stuff, reminded me of Seven. The end actually 'got' me and I thought the premise was more interesting than most of this stuff. It wasn't torture-porn, except perhaps for emotional torture and any good drama could qualify for that. There were a couple moments I held my hand up to block the screen but only because I don't really need to see the gore (The thing fell on his head. Yeah, I get it).

Plot: way above average for horror. Acting: Pretty top-notch considering the budget. All in all, I wish more 'scary' movies were actually interesting instead of just sound/special fx music videos without the music.

2010-02-09 03:10:17 AM
I really liked part 1, and I'd wager most horror fans would find it interesting.

I've seen all of them though, understanding less with each one, and even worse, less with each viewing:

There's characters from each movie that were in previous movies that I just can't ever remember. The only guy I ever remember is the cop who looks like McNulty (and the antagonists). It has this really un-needed meta-narrative that makes no sense. Even watching 1-5 over a week will leave me absolutely confused by part 5 and I will be wondering why I remember certain characters in part 3 and 4. I watched 6 and consciously told myself I was going to tune-out the meta-story for it and just enjoy schlocky gore, but part 6 was nothing but flashbacks and tying up loose ends from part 1-5.

Actually I can't think of a 6 episode movie series with a coherent storyline. Comparatively, I'm not sure if Saw really is as bad as it seems to me.

Anyway, check out the first one if you like that sort of thing and you probably should skip all the others.

I'm a big horror fan. Named after the woman who wrote Frankenstein for criminy sakes. My mom read me Bradbury when I was a kid. So I watched Saw. I liked it..it was entertaining. I tried to watch the others...got bored. Torture porn is not for me. I prefer monsters and zombies. There are too many real freakazoids out there. I was into gore when I was a teen, but I prefer at least some kind of plot.

Maybe I'm just getting old. :P

You and me both sister. Silence of the Lambs, Se7en, and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer are the only 'slasher' flicks I own. I think I watched the original Friday the 13th and a couple of Freddy films in my younger days, but kinda got bored with those pretty fast.

Give me a good zombie, or monster film anytime.

The Mist
Hellraiser
Dawn of the Dead
Descent
Gojira
Pan's Labyrinth

Those are more my speed.

If torture porn were to fade away (and take all those damn 'angry ghost' movies with them) and Hollywood would suddenly decide to start making good Lovecraft adaptations. I'd be a happy camper.

I saw the first one in the theater. One and done.

I've seen all six. I will see part 7.

I hate the term torture porn. Believe me, there are FAR BETTER EXAMPLES of this genre than Saw.

I give Saw credit for one thing - at least it tries to interconnect each film with the last one. Granted, it's extremely convoluted, but it's almost like chapters in a book or another episode in a TV show.

2010-02-09 07:36:06 AM
One more thing.

They always say this Saw is going to be the last one. They said it with 3, they said it with 4, they said it with 5, they said it with 6. I predict this will be the same thing.

Mind you, it's not my favorite series of movies. I have just stuck with it this long I want to see how it all ends. Which I'm sure will happen in Saw 7... until they say there will be Saw 8.

Yeah, what's up with the reboots and the prequels and pre-prequels and the based-on-the-movie sitcom-or-series, etc?

If they force more turds down that cash cow's throat, they can squeeze it a little more.

Indeed. The wife and I just caught up on the Saws (gracias Netflix) and I'm back in. I saw 3 in the theatres and lost interest, but 5 and 6 were pretty good. Yeah, these movies are gory and some of it is pretty unnecessary to advancing the plot, but the story is pretty good overall.

The Saw movie with Donnie Wahberg was pretty bad. He couldn't act his way out of a paper bag, and even his short scene in the Six Sense was annoying. I might check out Saw 6 just to see if it is any good. Otherwise the ones I've seen the first Saw and the Donnie version.
