It's generally synonymous with 3rd degree murder. It usually applies when the killer did not mean to kill the victim and did not intend for their actions to cause death, but their actions directly lead to the victim's death. Dr. Murray didn't mean to kill Michael, but the way he gave Michael drugs directly caused his death.

It generally requires the actions that caused the death to be considered negligent as well if I am not mistaken. So basically if you do something stupid and cause someones death, that is involuntary manslaughter.
