I guess it's back to the crusade-to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless, the powerless, in a world of criminals who operate above the law...

Serious question. I don't know the answer. L.A. light pollution can be seen from sites in Nevada. I assume it can from Arizona too.

I guess it depends on the cloud coverage.

You're doing it wrong. This is a mod-troll article that's intended to make you complain that Obama is favoring his home state by relocating federal research funds towards it.

Mods must be trying out ways to make the ad impressions from the Geek tag be more profitable.

Because Kilamanjaro is actually in Tanzania.

Only when you observe the sun at night

Nope. Here's a pic of the Kitt Peak observatory: (hot as the sun)

Light from the sun is sent down the angled tube. It's useful for viewing sunspot activity and the like, IIRC.

Hawaii is the better site: higher elevation, drier climate, more stable atmosphere, i.e. better "seeing." The US's best telescopes are in Hawaii.

It's not light pollution, it's regular old air pollution that's the problem for solar observatories. The air at the summit of Haleakala (Maui's highest point) is among the clearest in the world, which is why there are so many observatories up there.

Besides, why would Obama be bringing home the pork when he's a seekrit Muslin?

Almost any place on Earth's surface at an altitude of 4.2km is going to be drier than a spot at 2km altitude. Water runs downhill, you know.

Sometime in the late 80's, I got a rental toyota up to about 125 on the flat road leading up to Kit's peak. No one around, blasting along, wife pointing out if a jackalope walks on to the road, we're screwed.

Maybe there was something wrong with the gas pedal.

Haleakala is at about 3km, but yeah, it's still pretty dry up there, unless it's cloudy.

4.2km would be Mauna Kea... I've got 14.4% humidity right now at 4.14km on Mauna Kea, but a few nights back it was running around 1.8%.

Awesome! You're one of the Subaru TO's. We've been getting some very nice data from Subaru for a weak lensing study. Thanks for the help. :)

It wasn't a tease the hell out of them by grabbing their tail and pulling. It was the universal childish wrapping three fingers around the base of the tail and doing a windmill voila! all the way to the tip of the tail.

The coati wasn't happy but he didn't bite. They were pretty tame there.

At least you can tour Kitt Peak. One of the coolest rides I've ever taken was on a motorcycle up to the top. Talk about views! (and I'm not referring to the ones up into space.) The ride back down was a little less fun due to the "aw fudge, I'm going to miss a turn and go flying off a thousand-foot cliff" factor.

At the top, they let you go into or get close to lots of the instruments, including the solar observatory, which is the highlight of the tour IMHO. Just the views off the mountain side make it spectacular enough, though. However- not the place to go if you have respiratory issues. I was in my 30's and in good shape when I visited, and while I didn't have any major difficulty I could definitely tell that the altitude was playing fark with my breathing.

AdolfOliverPanties: Which is the better site, light-pollution-wise?

Dude. Solar.

Light pollution also isn't a problem unless you're only looking at things with low surface brightness. Mount Wilson is right over LA and is still one of the best locations for an observatory for doing work on stars. (Not to mention the inversion layer comes in, blankets LA and you get dark and very stable skies.)

NSO is split between facilities at Kitt Peak in AZ and Sacramento Peak in NM. This is basically extending that to a third location in HI. NOW while KPNO already has had closings of the smaller facilities (which I deplore) I doubt the McMath will go to cobwebs, though support for ground-based astronomy has been pathetic for the last 30 years. It's really idiotic because there's a loss of doable science for REALLY low cost.

We're that much closer to giving Arizona back to Mexico. Everybody wins!
