Pros: Interleague play, bringing baseball back to Milwaukee (related pro to that is when the Brewers moved to the NL and became another good rival for the Cubs), participation in promoting baseball back to it's previous popularity after the disastrous 1994 lockout.

Cons: The 1994 lockout, willfully ignoring cheating in the steroids era, not banning Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, etc and having their records expunged, allowing the NL to get away with their own rules and not adopt the DH like everyone else in the baseball universe.

Overall, I say give him a statue. There have certainly been worse commissioners (Gary Bettman, come on down!)

Now they're talking about pushing back the sunset date on that tax to fund a new basketball stadium. Subby is serious.

I don't particularly give a flip about the Cardinals, but I think you make a valid point there. I think the Brewers worked out fine but the Royals might have as well (and while I thought the Royals had the claim to having been in the AL longer, I see in looking it up that both teams started in the AL in 1969).

Bud is a thief and has always had the personality of what built his wealth, a used car salesman. His decision to hold onto the Commissioner's seat also gave us the presidency of George Bush!
Bush was going to run for Commissioner but once he found out that Bud intended to hold onto the office like the Pope he decided to go into politics instead. Instead of becoming the Commissioner George ran for the Governorship of Texas. The rest is, as they say, history.

Too much potential for conflict of interest and abuse of power, especially when there was talk of getting rid of a couple of teams and financing Miller Park. If the Pilots' owners didn't completely screw the pooch and let the team go bankrupt after one season, Selig never would've been in a position to buy the team. Or, alternately, if another ownership group in Seattle would've stepped up and purchased them pre-bankruptcy, they would've stayed in town.

Blame the original owners for the Pilots leaving, not Selig.

Sicks' Stadium was a terrible baseball facility. It was the federal bankruptcy court that allowed Bud to buy the team. The purchase did violate Major Leagues Baseball's contract with the city of Seattle, hence the lawsuits.

And despite the Pilots fiasco there is no question that Bud is a very direct cause of the Bush presidency. I and most of the world would have been far happier with Bush as the Commissioner of baseball (he could NOT possibly have been worse than Selig has been) than anywhere near the Texas governor's mansion or the White House.

To be fair, the Browns moved to Baltimore because there wasn't enough room for their ticket sales offices or parking what with the Cardinals trophy case taking up the greater portion of the Grand @ Dodier block. Why else do you think they started signing midgets and transporting them to the ballpark in large pastry?

The Brewers made the playoffs once while he was an owner. The tax was put to a vote, and was voted down. They did it anyway. A state senator lost his job for it, but the tax remained. The Brewers should have left.

I still think as long as Selig is the commissioner, the Brewers will never see The World Series. Once he passes, the curse will unlock and they will finally get over.

I could be wrong about this, but I think the offer came around right after KC's longtime owner Ewing Kauffman had just passed away. Ewing was a big American League guy, so they chose to stay in part because they believed that's what he would have wanted. Also, it's ancient history now, but the Royals have history in the AL- won two pennants, a World Series, were considered a "model franchise" during the 80s, etc. The attachment to that history was just stronger than it was for the Brewers.

At this point, as a Royals fan, I do wish they had made the switch. If nothing else, the pitching numbers would look a little better, right?
