Yeah, for some reason, people don't like paying $8 per issue at newsstands or buying a yearly subscription to something that's 75% ads and so light on content that they would've been better off just reading the material on the Internet for free in the first place.

Imagine that.

$2 blackjack tables??? I want! I was born in 1984, which was at least a decade too late to afford the gambling I enjoy so well. :(

Is 2-9% a terrible loss for Q2 2009? I mean, how does that compare to other industry losses/gains in the same quarter? I'd venture to guess that this doesn't indicate a catastrophe for print media quite so much as the article makes out, but I can't seem to google the appropriate references atm.

Who would buy a newsstand these days. Nobody is buying newspapers or magazines anymore.

There are lots of $2 blackjack tables in Vegas. They're just in places you don't want to go to. Play for a whole $5/hand. It really isn't that daring.

Why is this continually a sad and tragic event? This is how technology works.

Oh C'mon the Western on Fremont isn't that bad. Everybody should go at least once.

$2? I went to Harrah's in New Orleans last week and the smallest I could find were $15 tables. I lost $60 before my seat got warm. I went in thinking that winning some cash would be fun and losing some cash would be OK for a little entertainment. Sixty bucks is a little steep for 15 minutes of entertainment. That's the last time I go into a casino. My neighborhood poker games are good for a few hours of fun, even if I lose.

My netbook has worked just fine for me in the shiatter for the past two years. Also nice not to have a stack of car/video game mags stacking up on the back of the water tank.

I love Fremont St. I had way more fun there than anywhere else in Vegas. Although, we had our fun at the 4 Queens.

Saying the Western is on Fremont is like saying Klondike was on the strip. The western is a dive beyond dives. If you want to know what a 70 year old hooker looks like go to the Western.

As long as people use bathrooms and sit in waiting rooms, there will be a market for magazines and newspapers.

The worst part? Every newly unemployed copy editor then spends all day on fark waiting to point out every typo/spelling/grammer error they can.

barneyfifesbullet: As long as people use bathrooms and sit in waiting rooms, there will be a market for magazines and newspapers.

I could be wrong here but I believe certain businesses get magazines for their waiting rooms for a very low cost.

Any Farkers in the know tell me if I am correct? Our wating room has multiple copies of the same crap.

...since no one seems to hire editors for web content since once the content is rendered in digital form grammar and readability cease to be a priority.

The only print mags I subscribe to now are Entertainment Weekly, SPIN and People. I'm letting my sub to the last mag expire in May.

I used to live for a wide variety of magazines, from Vanity Fair to More to Q. Not only have they gotten expensive, they also have much less substance. VF now has more ad pages than story space.

I loved True Story back in the day before my tastes moved on beyond romance novels. When I googled TS last night, I was pissed to find it had become just another celeb gossip rag.

I loved Cosmopolitan back in the 80s and 90s. It now looks more like a smutty version of Tiger Beat than the sophisticated stuff I cut teeth on.

/RIP 16, Creem, Circus and Mademoiselle magazines

MAKE Magazine is totally worth the subscription price. $30 a year for a quarterly so packed full of neat crap, it actually takes three months to really give it the full appreciation it deserves before the next one arrives in the mail.

I used to also do the Smithsonian, PopSci, and Sky & Telescope, but now I just pick them up from the news stand if I see anything really stand-out. Mostly nowadays it's all just watered down, dumbed down crap, but not MAKE! Sadly, their sister pub "Craft" went tits up, because the female set apparently isn't really into tech+crafts. Smart girls are so hard to come by...

Go to the store. Open the magazine. The subscription card falls out. Fill it out mail it in in. For the price of two magazines you get the whole year. Let the subscription expire and they will keep sending you offers. Eventually they will send you an offer that is two years for the price of two magazines.

Went downtown to The Gold Spike the other weekend for the first time in years... they've completely revamped the place. They now have semi-hot young girls dealing black jack. Not a bad place for $3 tables. Although I miss the ol' Spike. Now it's just another casino. :(

offacue: Who would buy a newsstand these days. Nobody is buying newspapers or magazines anymore.

I dunno. Women still seem to read them.

What still amazes me is that any tech magazines sell. Between things like Gizmodo and Tom's Hardware, they've been made redundant.

I bought one years ago and it is still in pretty good shape so I don't need to rent any more.

Spoken like someone who never noticed British home decorating magazines are much better than ours. Subscriptions are in the $80 - $100 range so instead once or twice a year I pick up a BBC Homes or a RoomsRoomsRooms (when I can find one).

/is the Irish casino still in Vegas? That place was great and had low minimums

Why did the $2 blackjack table go away? Clearly not a gambler, just curious.

Insomnambulant: Why did the $2 blackjack table go away? Clearly not a gambler, just curious.

Because of the overhead costs, really. If you go to a really seedy place (like some of those mentioned), late at night, you MIGHT find a $3 table. $5 is the lowest you'll find on Fremont Street proper ($10 minimum at the Golden Nugget). And you're not finding less than a $10 table on the Strip. And you're lucky to find a $15 table at the fancier joints.

Cheapo Vegas FTW (new window)
