Nice one subby. Too bad the student atheletes won't understand it.

Does this have to do with all the students rated as LD or learning disabled?

This article contains no details about the nature of the "academic cheating." What a terrible piece of journalism.

What? That odd, nasal, somewhat high-pitched sound you hear?

That's JoePa snickering.

I, for one, feel bad for these kids. I mean, can we really expect them to be able to dribble, pitch, bat, run or whatever else AND read?

I guess we can't expect them to do all that and not get caught cheating

That's what we get for self-reporting. USC is off in the corner laughing uncontrollably (remember the Bush/Mayo incidents -- whatever happened to them). If we didn't self-report they would have not been able to prove anything.

I wonder how many programs will think twice about self-reporting in the future? If the punishment is just as bad as it would be if you didn't report and got caught, what good does self-reporting do?

How does this actually punish anybody? What is the real-world consequence?

This is one of those moments where I feel all idealistic n shiat. I like the idea that coaches might actually care about their students' development as whole human beings enough to teach them to do the right thing just because it's the right thing.

There is no incentive to self report anything to the NCAA. You should fight, obfuscate, and ignore the NCAA

You completely missed Ohio with Chicago being the epicenter of corruption.

wow FSU... serious fail. I don't see this as over yet... someone higher up had to know.

So what happens to the records of the other teams, What if the one loss to this school resulted in them not being in bowl game? The same is true for the other sports. Nothing really is a punishment here.
How about kicking all the kids who cheated out of school. If they graduated, remove the degree, and deny any official transcripts, and fire any faculty member that knew, planned, or organized this behavior

Taking away wins is bush league! Put them on probation or something that will actually deter them from doing this again. Of course Blobby knew about it. He's the biggest snake oil salesman this game has ever seen.

Yes, players from all schools get into scrapes w/ the law, but systemic cheating within an athletic program is another matter altogether.

So judging by a few smattered comments in this thread and absolutely nothing in the article, I'm guessing that the scandal involved professors giving passing grades to athletes who deserved grades that would have put them on academic ineligibility? With so much subjectivity in grading, I wonder how they even proved it.

I do recall an Outside the lines report where over 1/2 the basketball team was falsely declared learning diabled to receive addtional tutoring, etc.

Dead people in Chicago have a better voting turnout too. Hell, some of them even vote twice.

FSUs punishment probably doesn't fit the crime but I think the days of the NCAA handing out the death penalty are over. Because of Bowdens chase for the wins record that is all anyone will focus on.

What does that have to do with FSU getting caught cheating red handed?

Semihole fans are some of the worst out there. You should be more worried about trying to fill the seats of Ron Zook field than something that happened in december.

Leopold Stotch: What is the real-world consequence?

In real terms, the Florida State University athletic department spent between $350,000 to a half a million dollars petitioning the NCAA to overturn this ruling, so that saint Bobby could keep up with Joe Paterno in his "most wins by a Division one college football coach" record chase.
The money came out of the lessor sports, of course.

Meh. FSU's numbers will pale in comparison to what the NCAA does to USC once they finally extract justice for all of Pete Carroll's shenanigans. Of course Carroll won't be feeling the sting. He'll be cashing his Seattle Seahack paycheck and the only ones who will pay for his shiat will be anyone playing for USC over the next couple of years. Ain't justice grand?

With so much subjectivity in grading, I wonder how they even proved it.

It was an online music appreciation course that 60 or so athletes had taken. The tutor gave the athletes the answers to a test, which seems to be more of an academic issue more than an athletic one since the test was the same 2 years in a row. A player took it to the AD and he then reported it to the NCAA & suspended the players for 3 games. The NCAA, still butthurt from the Native American mascot episode; decided to stick it to the Seminoles. However, it hurt the football team less (it was during 2 FSU's crappiest years) than it did other sports, like track & field which had its 2007 national championship revoked.

TheLopper: The ESPN report on this mentioned how one of the football players had an IQ of 60.

The main sources for that story were the tutor who gave the answers out and an idiot wide reciever who was kicked out of school for burglarizing a teammate's house.

Oh yeah, the NCAA also took away several football scholarships too, and Jimbo Fisher still managed to get a top 10 recruiting class.
