I've noticed that too much beer affects my bone in the wrong way

So pop gives you cancer and beer (may, study inconclusive) give you strong bones?

Outstanding, gentlemen. I was right to switch from Coke to Goose Island all along.

I guess all the beer drinking is helping my rugby team

I'm a beer drinker and I approve this message.

So when I stuck my dick in your beer, it was a good thing. This is science!

2010-02-08 11:31:36 AM
For as much as I have fallen over, I have yet to break a bone.

So my anecdotal evidence supports this.

2010-02-08 11:34:02 AM
"To conclude any bone health benefits from this study would require a great leap," said Dr. Tim Byers, deputy director of the University of Colorado Cancer Center in Aurora.

See I don't see this, they have a study which links silicon intake to bone density, they have a study which shows beer contains significant silicon, they have a study which shows that increased silicon consumption from any source, including beer, increases bone density.

Now you might say that we only have a few studies and that this might not be enough to claim that it is proven, but thats not a question of taking a "leap" the logical conclusion is laid out in the science, the only question is how well established those studies are.

Other qualms people had was that if you drink to much you are at risk of injury, but again, this is is true of almost every single substance known to man. Whats more their claim is not particularly relevant since you do not need to drink a large amount, by the research cited showed that a single IPA might equate to the average intake of a normal person. So one would likely be sufficient to have a beneficial affect on ones health and have a comparably negligible increase on ones chance of falling.

Having read the article, I can tell you I get my silicone from sucking on my wife's implants.

I'm glad I got that grolwer of Rogue - Yellow Snow IPA yesterday. Maybe we'll see more "Guinness Is Good For You" posters now...

hmmm, i think we need photographic evidence to support this theory.

Oh wow, didn't realize the press release for this came out for this already - I was totes going to submit it, figured it'd be fark-ready.

I got asked by some press lady last week if I wanted to comment on the study (it was "under embargo" until today). If you look up the actual study that the press release is talking about, it's entirely about a silicon-rich diet and barely makes mention of beer. Apparently whomever did the writeup took that idea and completely blew it out of proportion. Amusing, though.

I don't think it's so much the beer as it is the falling-into-everything drunkeness. Smashing your bones into pavement makes them extra dense and calcified after a while. It's science.

Having shattered my leg walking last May, I question this studies findings.

//hmmmm...if only my PO would sign off on a therapeutic beer-drinking plan

So people who drink beer are now getting stronger bones because of it.

Wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that beer drinkers fall down more and need stronger bones to survive?

It's evolution baby!

Since it didn't touch the edges of the bottle, I'll call no harm/no foul. Poor thang.

Dang - it would seem that I'm built like the Terminator.

I mountain bike a lot, and that results in a lot of falling.

I don't break bones (but my wife hates the big nasty bruises).

After biking, we do enjoy some beers.

Guess I'm following the right routine - carry on!

2010-02-08 12:20:21 PM
Well, I drink beer and I've never broken a bone, therefore beer must be good for bones.

Any beer, or specific brand required?

The article says it's speculation. But that won't stop you Farkers from getting that beer gut.

/Maybe they should focus on researching more important things.

What on earth could be more important than beer?

TFA:
The beer type with the overall highest silicon level was India Pale Ale, with an average of 41.2 mg/L. Other ales came in second with 32.8 mg/L.

Woohoo! I love IPAs.

More anecdotal evidence: I drink a lot of beer and have never broken a bone. It's working!

anti-anecdotal, I drink a lot and I've broken my foot (2 or 3 bones) a rib, my wrist, and my tib/fib. =( all separate incidences. None were the result of drinking either =(

Judging by the responses, sucking on my wife's implants, obviously.

I didn't say they were still inside her, by the way, so I don't know where the other guys (sonofslacker, dalovindj, the lunatic fringe) are coming from. Some sort of necrophiliac conference or something.

That is the problem, you see. My wife is dead, hence the necrophiliac reference.

I get it, things got out of hand at the Vegas Fark party after the Saints won... you should see the pictures. Hell I don't even remember the grave robbing but we were able to pawn a ton of good shiat.

To keep my beer builds strong bones fantasy going, I'll just go ahead and assume you drink light beer. TFA says it's among the lowest silicon sources for beer.

Is Newcastle a light beer? I pretty much drink it exclusively... also maybe there;s an upper bound, for a good six months I was drinking a 12 pack a night.

We'll need something to eat with all that beer. Maybe some silicon chips. Hey! Here are some, just sitting inside my computer. These have GOT to be healthy! Let me just try one... ZZZFPH

no,

Beer studies that say beer is good for ur bones is good for selling more beer.

follow the money trail to the ones who funded the "study".

alcohol has been shown in too many studies to count that its hard on bones, never mind the rest of ur body.

whatever u do, drink in moderation.
