bulldg4life: I sure do hope someone comes in here and argues against net neutrality.

Net Neutrality has more to do with billing customers than it does censoring content. In fact, there are very little restrictions and in the case of 4chan they are known to cause problems. If there were illegal activities or whatever causing issues on Verizon's wireless, they can legally block access to it.

What Net Neutrality really is good for is not allowing ISPs to charge us per bandwidth and per an email. The GOP is trying to say that the FFCs ruling on Net Neutrality is hurting these poor giant telecom companies and that consumers are ripping them off.

Really, I think that this type of censorship is more of a 1st amendment issue than it is, Net Neutrality

Pardon me for breaking rules 1 & 2.

First, let me say the rest of 4chan is unfairly lumped in with /b/, the "random" board. The other forums are comparable to any other forum on the Internet (although the "has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?" obliteration of the English language originated on /v/).

That said, most of the traffic is on /b/. That forum is full of some of the worst crap I've ever seen. But crap is used as fertilizer, and /b/ is a fertile source of Internet culture. O RLY? owls, LOLcats, Rickrolls, Ragetoons, TITS or GTFO...that's /b/. It's a meme incubator. You do have to sift through a lot of garbage ("Check out my doubles!") to get to the good stuff, but the occasional gem of brilliance makes it worth it (well, for those with warped senses of humor).

It's also a fascinating psychology/sociology study. /b/ is a simmering pool of id. The anonymity lets people say what they truly think and be who they truly are. It's a bastion of political incorrectness in this era of sensitivity training and lawsuits. It's alarming, yet brilliant at the same time.

For better or worse, Fark would be quite different if it wasn't for 4chan and /b/.

I do not live in Detroit, nor am I a "guido". I certainly would not live in Detroit, as I think even most of you can sympathize with that attitude.

And the fact I was not born on America soil means nothing at this point. I am a productive member of society here, and infact I do pay my taxes, vote and everything else one would expect.

I simply do not like most of the people here, and have found myself depressed with the lack of maturity in the American public. I know enough not to expect any different on this site, but every once in awhile, someone with some level of insight will post something that I will enjoy reading.

Most of you are here for my amusement, nothing else. And from what I have seen, this country is fast becoming built upon immigrants, and recent immigrants at that. Many of my people have plans to move here and become a productive part of this society.

It won't take much either. Washing, getting up in the morning, learning basic english and having a backbone and work ethic, and some general knoweledge about dietary practices, will put you ahead of most Americans.

Depressed? Try different meds. Try not being a douchebag. Or try buying the farm. All three can work wonders for you!

Why the f*ck did you pick that comment to respond to? And why would you try and rope me into your bizarre trollish shenanigans? And why am I wasting my time? Who was this character in the hospital? And why was he trying to kill Nordberg? And for whom? Did Ludwig lie to me? I didn't have any proof, but somehow, I didn't entirely trust him either. Why was the 'I Luv You' not listed in Ludwig's records? And if it was, did he know about it? And if he didn't, who did? And where the hell was I?

Uchiha_Cycliste: Mock26: Uchiha_Cycliste: Mock26: Wee Todd: Not An Alt: Wee Todd: It wouldn't be hard to make a similar argument for many, many, many other websites too. You really want Verizon deciding what websites you're allowed to visit? That's your prerogative. I don't.

4chan is a horrible place, granted. But this is an unbelievably slippery slope. If any companies would benefit from selective internet availability, it'd be the cables and phones. And as soon as there's profit to be had by limiting access, it'll happen. Mark my words.

I don't really care, i mean, we as consumers don't know the whole story, so we have to trust the top companies and our government to do what's best for us. I don't want to get off on a political argument, but I think the internet is a little safer for verizon subscribers because of this block, and I hope more ISPs follow suit.

Who cares if limited access leads to profit? I would certainly get into that type of business if it were available to me, most people would....but we're not talking about e-commerce - we're talking about a scummy website full of perverts and atheists.

Wow on a stick. I hope you're attempting to troll what you perceive as a troll (I have not trolled in this thread), otherwise you have pretty much proven exactly my point in my post three or four above.

Again: slippery slope. None of my argument has to do with 4chan, and it isn't even predicated on this actually being an act of Verizon right now. It's a cascade of problems we have to PREVENT from ever getting STARTED. Once it starts, it won't stop, exactly because of opinions like yours. (Which I still hope isn't yours... Please let me have bitten at a troll...)

So long as it is NOT started or continued by the government then there is absolutely nothing wrong with it being started or kept going. No one's rights have been violated so where is the harm? To a certain degree private companies are allowed to censor on behalf of their customers, and in this particular case that is what Verizon is doing. If people are upset about this then they can just go find another company to do business with.

Ideally this is true... but issues arise when you have restricted competition, what if you are in some podunk area and Company A is the only provider? What if they decide they just plain wanna fark you and restrict and disallow all torrent sites? The internet should be all or nothing, none of this selective censorship bullshiat.

So you feel that companies who find certain material offensive should be required to provide access to said material? Why? Take an example of an Internet Service Provider that is run by and targeted for devout christians. Why should they not be allowed to block access to sites that they find offensive and/or that go against their teachings?

I can't get behind tyranny by the minority, let the Christian cocksuckers put filters client side, server side is bullshiat.

As for your podunk example, well sometimes those are the breaks and it would certainly NOT be a case of someone's rights being violated. Life is not always fair to everyone nor does everyone have a right to have access to everything on the internet.

So, life, liberty and f*ck you for being poor eh?

Nope. I never said "f*ck your for being poor."

But please show me where unlimited access to the internet is a right in this country?

As for putting filters client said, once again, why should a company (in this case an Internet Service Provider) be required to provide unlimited access that it finds offensive and/or that violates the beliefs that the company stands for? Why is it OK to force a company to provide access to objectionable material but it is not OK for the company to block said objectionable material?

And how is this tyranny by the minority? What rights have been violated? How is the minority oppressing or harming anyone? And if you are so against server side filters then what about pay sites? By your very own reasoning it seems that you would think that making people pay to have access to a site is tyranny. Am I right on this? And if not then what is the difference?

Because they're a communications provider. This was hashed out with phone service ages ago. While ISPs don't have official common carrier status, like phone companies, the same principles can be applied. A phone company can't refuse to let you call up a phone sex line no matter how rauncy and they can't refuse to connect your call to an openly racist organization either, no matter how patently offensive either might be to some people. If they did, they'd be a in lot of trouble on multiple levels. Now if we were talking about a server hosting company, then it would be different. But we're talking about a company providing communication services here. Doesn't matter if it's telephone service or internet service.

Welcome to America, we're all fuking immigrants!

This is true, so I will not contest you on that point. Historically speaking, yes, we are all immigrants to somewhere, from somewhere.

The key difference here is that while I live here currently and work, I have not raised a family here, nor do I plan to, why would I? It would be an insult to my children when I have the option of raising a family back home, or just anywhere other than here.

I was promised a land of opportunity, instead, all I received was a land of people who have been raised to let someone else do the thinking for them. How very very sad.

You gave the answer as to why ISPs are at present allowed to do this, because they do NOT have official common carrier status. The internet is NOT a government-licensed carrier like phone companies are. And until that changes the ISPs are allowed to censor. It is as simple as that.

4chan is an image board website. It's like a message board, but it's really simple to post pictures. There is no registration required to post, and most people post anonymously. m00t, the founder, based it on 2chan, a Japanese image board. m00t wanted the site to be a place to discuss Japanese culture, and there several forums dedicated to that. There are also forums about video games, literature, photography, cooking, and so on.

But by far the most popular is /b/, the "random" board. Pretty much anything goes in /b/. There you can find racism, sexism, girls posting naked pictures of themselves, and gore. It is also a congregating place for Anonymous, a loosely-knit group of hackers (for lack of a better word) who like to chaos just for the hell of it (or, in their words, "for teh lulz"). Things like breaking into Christian fundamentalists' Facebook accounts, uploading pornography onto the accounts, and posting the screenshots onto /b/. Flooding video game stores with requests for Battletoads. When Sarah Palin's e-mail address was breached, it was done to post the results on /b/.

Many of the inside jokes, also known as "memes", have leaked onto Fark. Caturday, Rickrolls, O RLY owls...they were all popular on 4chan before they were ever on Fark.

Anyway, I know way too much about /b/. I might as well become an hero now.

delicious, DELICIOUS wonderful Safe Harbor.

The moment Verizon (ok, VZW, pedants) blocks 4chan because it's the worst site on the Internet (it's not, seriously. 4chan is tamer than your housecat), they lose Safe Harbor protection and become responsible for all content passed through them.

now, what they've _done_ is block 4chan due to their behavior on the network, namely, DOS of VZW identified as originating from 4chan's IP group.

or at least that's the claim.

If I'm supposed to think for myself, then why would I ever listen to a single word coming out of your mouth?

This is why I say you Americans are so clueless. The ability to think for yourself is the ability to take several different opinions on the same topic, and sift through the facts and come up with your own conclusion of the situation.

Your government is telling you they are here to serve you, and not Wall Street. I'm telling you that is a complete fabrication of the truth.

One of us is right, one of us is wrong. You have to think for yourself and realize what is actually happening. As much as many of you are just dying to have someone do the thinking for you, due to your laziness, no one else can.

Accept your fate and start doing your country some good. You are shaming your ancestors by letting this country be run into the ground. Hopefully you are all publically shamed for letting this happen.

AirForbes1: Many of the inside jokes, also known as "memes", have leaked onto Fark. Caturday, Rickrolls, O RLY owls...they were all popular on 4chan before they were ever on Fark.

Cool story, bro.

Except when /b mines Fark for material, I'd say it's about 50/50 when it comes to where memes are sources.

PrinceofFark: Read the comment first. I'm not "from here", I simply moved here some time ago, with the hope of finding a better life.

Did I find a better life? In some ways, yes, I have alot to owe America. But in the same breath, America has much that is owes me. There is a reason why the rest of the world thinks little to nothing of you.

Everyone back home have trouble believing the stories I tell them of how unintelligent the average American is, how they treat their bodies, their freedoms and their time. We just got some American stations recently, and I've already seen some of the shock leaving their faces after watching what world class "entertainment" the US has.

Also, the fact that your government is in the back pockets of Wall Street, and that you are all bending over and taking it in the rear, is a class example to the rest of the world of how complacement you are all.

I expect more oppression, and more submissiveness. But please, keep acting like i'm the crazy one here, and that everything is just fine here in America.

You know, as much of a douche as PoF is being about this...can anyone really say he's actually WRONG?

No, no one can, so no one will. It's becoming so blantantly obvious that even the most uneducated of Americas is starting to wake up and smell the scandal.

It's all part of the game I believe. They do one thing, then tell the masses another, and for the majority of them, simply hearing a pre-planned, pre-written speech by someone else, given by another, is good enough for them.

By the time everyone is up in arms over what you've let your government do to your country, it will be too late. The damage will have been done. In all honesty, I think the point of no return is probably close to approaching, or we are going through it right now.

Enjoy the ride, I know I will be back home when things get very bad here. Maybe some of you will remember back to this day, and wish you could all kiss my feet.

If I own a restaurant, and you walk into my restaurant and you are with a group that is loud and disturbing the rest of my guests and your group is causing damages to my facility as well as harassing my patrons, should I not reserve the right to throw you and your group out? You may have done absolutely nothing wrong, but because you are associated with that group, you are kicked out also.

Now, you have some options:
-Your entire group can apologize and behave better, and then I let you and your friends in.
-You can cut ties with your group who is obviously bad company and enjoy my restaurant sans your posse.
-You can tell me to piss off and find a restaurant that tolerates your behavior.

If children become loud and unruly, it is the parent's responsibility to take care of their child. If however the parent fails to quiet or deal with their kid, the restaurant owner should be able to tell the family to leave. In this case, 4chan is the parent (scary), and this is a message to them that they need to make their ilk behave.

In the case of ISPs or the like, there aren't many options and in some cases only 1 option. Some of you are saying because of this, no matter what transpires I have to tolerate anything and under no circumstance am allowed to have any control over my own business. I will agree that I don't reserve the right on filtering what is/isn't "appropriate", but filtering explicitly illegal material, or damaging or harassing users/groups is my discretion. No one would want to own or operate an ISP if they did not reserve basic rights like being able to terminate or block these extremely limited sectors.

I'm pretty sure those came out of the WoW forums.

Nope, 4chan in 2001

More related to the article: Blocking 4chan is a terrible, terrible idea. One so bad it is akin to taunting the dynamite monkey.

This is a false analogy, what you are really doing is saying that me and my friend's can't talk to those unruly bastards. Not that they can't come in your establishment. Those guys are dicks, I get it, you can kick em out of your place, but you should have no right to prevent me from palling around with them.

As generalizations go, his is generally accurate. But there is a reason he is here. And I am pretty sure it's not because he was overwhelmed by the epic awesome that is his home country.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that PoF is from India. You could go to curryfarts.com or whatever India's answer to fark is and complain about how all Indians stink and how India is farked because nearly it's entire economy is based on providing tech support to fat, stupid, American ,rednecks.

Do all Indians stink? No. Do they all do phone support? No. Are they easy to pick on? Absofarkinglutely.

I haven't seen any posts from PoF that divulged where he is from. I am guessing there is a reason for that.

I would just ask that he name this perfect place that is so pants shiatting cool so we can all move there and open a Starbucks inside a McDonalds inside a Walmart.
