fanboys? i understand when you mock people who declare allegiance to a brand or a consumer product and call them "fanboys." but ... i'm pretty sure devotees of an organized athletic organization are pretty much supposed to be fans. just sayin'.

This guy (and his dad) are high-maintenance head cases.

Glad Iowa saw this coming, and withdrew their scholly offer.

He "has yet to qualify academically."

I didn't realize U$C had academic qualifications.

Bladel: Glad Iowa saw this coming, and withdrew their scholly offer.

Like he was ever going to go to Iowa anyways. Pulling the offer is a "you can't fire me because I quit" move. If he was going to stay in the Big Ten it was pretty obvious a while ago that it would be Ohio State.

Some of us actually went to a college (USC '91) and have a connection / reason to be a fan. Unlike most college "fanboys" who choose based upon colors or locality.

Subby's an idiot.

Players most likely going to other schools in the Big Ten has never stopped Iowa from leaving the offer there. Henderson got dropped because of his attitude and lack of qualification.

Fans cheer for a team. Fanboys are delusional fans who think their team is the greatest ever and can do no wrong, even with presented with evidence. These are also the type that border on conspiracy theorists when their team loses. Fanboys are also people who cheer for recruits signing letters of intent.

If your team loses, do you open another beer and say "That sucks" and move on with your life? Then you're a fan.

Do you start weeping openly (assuming you're older than 6), find coaches/players/refs/cheerleaders to blame, a singular bad call that clearly determined the outcome of the whole game and are on the internet within moments registering your disgust? Then you're a fanboy.

He's not going to Florida State because he needs a school where the athletes can cheat on their classwork without getting caught.

Yep. Those LOI's are farking contracts of adhesion, and there's no rule saying you ever have to sign one. I really don't understand why anyone ever does.

Your coach could bail at any second. Your program could end up with severe penalties for things that happened 5+ years ago. The team you end up on could literally have not even a passing resemblance to what you were signing up for. But if you want to leave after all of that, you still have to sit out a year and get the school's permission to let you go because you signed like a one page document. It's ridiculous.

I'd rather he play basketball at Marquette instead. Stupid USC making him play football...

I was under the impression that the scholarship is what was legally binding once they enter school. I realize that the LOI is also binding on the student to attend that school, but I always figured that the LOI was the "tender offer" and the scholarship was the contract.

Of course, I have never played D1 sports, so I have no clue.

Sure looks like it. However, as someone who knows and has worked a bit with Coach O (Orgeron), he speaks such poor english on a day to day basis that no thought is really required. He yells, you run.

This is old news. The new news is the kid may open his recruitment back up.

Link (I'm committed until I'm not)

A scholarship offer isn't binding in itself, I believe signing the LOI is binding but I'm not 100% sure.

From what I read, he took the ACT over back on Saturday because his previous score wasn't high enough to make him academically eligible for an NCAA scholarship period, not a USC scholarship in particular.

The coverage of college football recruiting has gotten gradually more insane over the last 20-25 years or so, that's for certain.

If true, it would explain why he's coming off as such a complete douche. You have to be seriously dumb, I mean borderline special ed, not to be able to meet the NCAA test requirements. Wherever he goes, I'll bet he's good for at least 5-6 false starts per game.

The coverage of sports, in general, has become insane. I started my journalism career as a sportswriter, but despite the free tickets and other perks, I would never willingly go back to doing that again.

Which brings to mind another moronic rule by the NCAA: if the coach is the one responsible for the violations, he (not the school) should be penalized.

I managed to dig up a reference to him retaking the ACT.

Link (new window)

The original article I read had him scoring a 17 and needing to get it to 19 to be eligible. The link to that article is a dead link but this one also references him needing to raise it by 2 points. Maybe the original piece was too *ahem* specific.

I completely agree regarding the coverage of sports in general. Sports have been part of American culture for a long time now but it's never been more apparent than today. They've developed into such a huge business over the past 30 years, it's really remarkable. In some ways I prefer the days before 24 hour sports networks. I definitely prefer college football from the old days over today's product but what we have today is what you get from the over commercialization that's become more and more prevalent and there's no going back now.

The only reason he picked USC is that's the only one he could spell.
