StingerJ: Is this the plant?
Google maps (new window)

Right near the water. Easy in and easy out if it was foul play.

Pretty amazing story. One of the guys was impaled and pinned to the ceiling by control rods.

7of7: Are the people on the scanner talking about taking pictures of the dead bodies?

The people that 'won't be transported out by emergency services'... whatever that means. I assumed that it meant the people that didn't need an evac and had injuries treatable on-scene. I suppose it could be the dead to document injuries, location, and/or identity.

Where are they going to bury all of the casualties?

Heh, just called the inlaws down in Middleton...they'd heard the windows rattle a bit, thought it was a heavy truck backfiring.

I told them I was glad they were fine, and to turn on the news.

I think the sleep deprivation from new twins is getting to them :)

It's impossible to say the radiation release didn't kill anyone.

simpsonfan: Gas, oil, or coal fueled plant blows up = casualties at the plant, smoke in the area, damages from shockwave of explosion.

Nuclear plant blows up = Not an atomic bomb type explosion, but still the possibility of radiation killing people all over the place.

And before we clicked the link and read the story, how many of us first thought terrorism?

In Middletown, CT? Pretty much nobody.

I thought about lack of infrastructure investment and aging facilities. Anyone else?

I do just a bit of work with gaseous fuels and the first thing I though of was a mechanical failure allowing for a buildup of natural gas within a portion of the structure. Hydrocarbon detectors should have slammed valves closed at the first hint of buildup, but it it was a catastrophic failure, a rapid leakage would present an explosive atmosphere even with emergency protocols in place and functioning.

No, it's a perfectly cromulent word.

Brit still keeps in touch with her. She transfered to somewhere near DFW this semester. The whole deal kinda freaked her parents out. My wife wanted to buy my daughter a goddamned Peterbilt for a couple of weeks, too.

Listening to the feed, it doesn't seem to be a very dynamic scene. Sudden, catastrophic and singular might be good descriptions.

Has anyone mentioned that casualties can mean both dead AND injured.

Sure would hate for someone to be confused.

BravadoGT: micromedic: hollowmoon,
I am hoping and keeping thoughts in my mind for these folk! I am also hoping that 2 fatalities doesn't get exponentially bigger... My best wishes for everyone involved.

Fox is saying there are reports of "bodies everywhere." So I'm guessing it will...

AFAIK "bodies" does not mean "dead". It can refer to both the fatalities and the injured, it's much like a synonym for casualties.

Let's keep the hope alive.

For us in Connecticut, it is... we aren't that big of a state.

LesserEvil: orbitalfreak: RHMolBio: BAN GAS POWER NOW!

/oh, it wasn't a nuke plant? No outrage in that case.

Exactly. Number of deaths in America due to catastrophic incidents at nuclear power plants? Zero. And that includes Three Mile Island. But, obviously, nuke plants are unsafe...

The SL-1 would like a word with you....

That said, Nuclear power has been relatively safe, and opposition to it has been disproportional to the threat, compared to other power sources. Today we have even "cleaner" and safer means to produce nuclear power. Emotional ideology has been keeping us from realizing it.

SL-1 was nasty.

And not commercial.

Yea. Sounds like something sprung a leak and it just popped itself out.

About 15 years ago, I was in a large shop that had a 40 pound propane cylinder split from being overfilled. It burst, we saw liquid propane boiling and spilling across the floor, it think we yelled something to people, then made tracks. I got about 40 yards outside when the world thumped and rebooted.

I had worse injuries from landing face first on asphalt than a couple of people who were still inside and suffered only minor burns and missing eyebrows. All the windows were gone and the roof was on a little bit crooked. Obviously, that power plant incident involved a larger quantity of fuel, but the majority of the damage in my little boom wasn't at the flashpoint, but at the perimeter of the explosion. There were no fires afterwards except for some smoldering papers and such.

I didn't know that. I guess there were some more severe injuries in that car than what I first knew. My bills totaled a little over 30k and I think their insurance allowed us just 5k after it was all spread around. I spent another 5k just for additional CTs and follow-up work in Angelo. She had a pretty severe concussion.

You are grounded for that comment!

Why so negative? you should try to be more positive in this current situation.
