FTA:That got the attention of a woman hundreds of miles (kilometers) away in southern Germany

Well, what is it then? Miles or kilometers? How can I understand this story without knowing how far it was?

FTFA: The man had climbed over pack ice off the coast to photograph a sunset near the town of St. Peter-Ording, then became disoriented on the ice.

Milometers (rhymes with thermometer, not millimeter). Get it right or pay the price.

Impressive!

If only there were a large celestial body that he could have used as a reference point.

2010-02-03 02:52:25 PM
Officiers then lectured him on the dangers of trekking on the ice.

Reminds me of when I was a lifeguard at a state park. Two small children (regulars) one day announced loudy "Let's play lifeguard!"

The one then grabbed the other by neck and dragged him to the side of the pool yelling "What are you doing jumping off the diving board knowing you can't swim? Are you just dumb? You're an idiot and if I ever see you get out of the shallow end I'll have you banned."

Apparently the girl had watched my siser and me at work.

If he had waited for the big dipper to come out, he would've frozen to death! Did you not read the article? It was already below freezing while the sun was---ohhhhhhhhh......nevermind

"At the time the man lost his bearings, the air temperature was below freezing. He could have frozen to death or fallen through the ice, Stielow added."

I love these kinds of articles. And he COULD have stubbed his toe and caught a bad infection; and he COULD have held his breath for hours before dying; and he COULD have fapped furiously; and he COULD have had a 9 year old girl's body dumped into the ocean.

I mean, really, if you're going to go into conjecture territory, why not make it really good?

That assumes that the webcam was on a building and not simply on a post; and that there was anything for him to see and not just ice piled up a couple of meters high.

Or that buildings would be close and high enough to be visible behind the dunes - which would be white as well.

Are they suggesting the man stranded on the ice would have been in a better situation if the temperatures were above freezing?
