Not a remake.
Just another movie based on the source material. There is a difference.

The original had some pretty good visuals, and a few ripped-from-a-comic-panel poses that were terrific.

I could have done without the genetically identical twin who looked nothing like his brother. I could have done without the family in the wastelands - those characters were too silly to work outside of a comic. I could have done without seeing a 'hacker' reprogram a robot by shorting out two wires. Oh, and the flying bike chase was not the world's best example of special effects.

Despite all that, I liked the movie. If they could redo THAT movie, but correct the flaws, I'd love it.

As a big fan of the comics -- the movie was bearable. Just.
And that's because Stallone looks just like Dread and Rob Schneider saved it.

The comics are hilarious -- and so should the movie be. Black comedy.

For God's sake, this.

Stallone could have pulled it off without Schneider. The movie wouldn't have been great--but it would have been good, at least.

Absolutely. Or if they have one, kill him good-- "...Told you I could _______, Dredd... aaaagghh..."

And make him KEEP HIS @#$%^&* HELMET ON. Even when he's in a hospital bed.

Saved
it? From what? From possibly being a good movie? ...Now that I think about it, that IS Schneider's greatest talent.

Dream Dredd casting: in-his-prime Clint Eastwood.

I read them when I was a kid, and got back into Dredd when Simon Bisley did the first Badman/Judge Dredd book.

promptly hit the back issue boxes and was a happy camper!

horrified: The comics are hilarious -- and so should the movie be. Black comedy. supposed to be satirical, a comment on how totalitarian systems of government are a bad thing, but most mind slave Mericans are too brainwashed to figure that out and that is why the American Republic is doomed.

As someone who has 3-4 boxes of 2000ad and assorted comics at home, I'm getting a kick etc.

As much as it pains me to say this, I don't HATE the Stallone JD movie. As someone else pointed out, they threw in a lot of "straight from the comic" frames and themes. Bonuses were the Angel Gang, ABC warrior, the block war at the start, the lawgiver operating correctly, the uniforms being mostly spot on, the long walk, and a lot of other stuff. Even the older judges, McGruder etc, looked like their comic counterparts (though in McGruder's case, the name was slightly altered).

The REAL shame about the movie is that they put so much effort to preserve a lot of periphery, then they went and kicked the JD Universe squa in tha nuts.

Big failures were Rob Schneider being in it at all for no real reason; Rico not being an identical twin was stupid; Judge Dredd taking off his helmet.. wha?; Judge Dredd kissing Hershey... jesus farking christ.

All the other stuff doesn't matter, the small touches were nice, but what's the point when you destroy the only two things ever JD reader knows: He's an emotionless judging machine. He never takes off his helmet.

Follow those two simple rules, and you've got your damn JD movie.

Some other things they may want to consider.

Don't get a "name" actor. Because then you'll feel obliged to show his damn face. Find some unknown muscle bound aspiring actor with a decent range. Hell, it doesn't have to be even that decent a range. Dredd doesn't exactly span the emotional rainbow himself.

No gimmicky sidekick. Just. No. Why would you do that? Judge Hershey was fine. Straight forward, in character, nice ass. Everything was great until the end.

Speaking of which: No family plot or love interests. Dredd doesn't have a family and he doesn't love anything. That's kind of the whole point.

The biggest thing they could do to make things right however? Make a Slaine movie instead (good call mhd).
