If you own and typically use such a suitcase, kill yourself.

There's "bulletproof and has a built-in satellite phone", and then there's "wrapped in gold leaf and the hand-sewn (shed) fur of newborn snow leopards". One is functional; the other is just wasteful.

What kills me is that I hear people talk about how hard you work and how you "deserve" these sorts of things, but if all you can think of to spend your millions on is a bag that costs as much as my car (or even a few of my childhood neighbors' homes), then let's face it. You're out of things to blow money on. I'd have more respect if you passed the money onto your employees, investors, or even your customers. Because you clearly don't need it.

And no, I didn't get all my luggage out of Wal-Mart (a lot of Samsonite, High Sierra, Eddie Bauer, etc. that I found on sale) but when you've gotten to the point of needing metal cases to protect your suitcases, you've gone beyond the use case of what you're buying: a farking suitcase. So yeah, kill yourself.

My guess is that if you own this piece of luggage, you don't have to worry about losing it, as you probably also own your own fleet of jets as well.

but at the same time this is the United States... I don't want to be one of those obama voters that gets pissy because someone has something I don't. It's not my job or my place to tell someone how to spend their own money.

I like how just making something seem exclusive can convince people that it is more valuable. I'm quite sure that the Hermes people can't stop giggling in their marketing meetings.

On a more serious note, it is amazing how the price of lost luggage does add up -- onetime I lost a bag with two suits, two good pairs of shoes, a pair of glasses and a camera, plus the bag itself and let's just say it was a little shocking when it was added up. Plus I lost it heading out, so then I had to shop for new business clothes on the road.

Hermes is a smart company. In fact, they ran an international design competition for their silk line...and the prizes were nice, but nowhere near what the company would make on selling the items designed for them by students and freelancers.

Smart, smart company.

LAUGHTER OL first there is the troll of this thread who talks about Obama which gives me much laughter at the silliness.

Also if this was the article from The Consumerist.com it would be about how the airline is the horrible industry for not taking the more perfect care of a bag by giving this bag its own airplane. It would say OMGOODNESS THIS IS THE OUTRAGE OF THE AIRLINE BUSINESS!

Pretty much what I was going to say, except for the bit about Obama.

If you can afford that suitcase, and want one, who am I to laugh or scold? I have hobbies that when people hear how much money I've spent they shake their heads, and I'm quite far from wealthy.

The only reason to have such a suitcase, IMO, is for the same reason there are shops down on Melrose Ave. which sell such things as $25,000 chandeliers. Why would you want a $25K chandelier? Yes, it was very beautiful, but it wasn't obviously $25K unless you told someone it was.

So the only way anyone would know is if you had guests over and said, "I see you are admiring my chandelier. It's a $25,000 Up-Your-Ass chandelier made of pure volcanic rock crystal. And while you admire it, you're standing on my $50,000 pure yak wool antique Persian rug, which I bought in Samarkand. Oops, gotta run pack my $40,000 suitcase to fly to London in my $4.5 million Lear jet." Seriously, WTF?

Warren Buffett does not have all that money because he buys shiat like this, by the way.

He did just that. He passed it on to the good people at Hermes. They paid their employees, and suppliers and taxes. Those employees bought other goods and services and those suppliers paid their workers. See how that works. Of course he could have just put the money under a mattress and not "wasted" it, and that would do the economy a lot of good.

Someone who donates $100,000 to charity gets far more attention and awe than someone with a $300,000 car or necklace or whatever, so I don't understand this aspect of being rich.
Wouldn't it be more logical to give away money and still be rich, demonstrating you're more rich than previously thought?

They did the work and probably had many of the ideas that created your wealth, and you couldn't have done it without them, or you'd have disposed of them to keep even more for yourself. They have a finite time on this earth just as you do. How does the sum of their man-hours compare to yours? You can say they were fairly compensated if they were paid only what they were promised, or at least enough to keep them from quitting, but did they really get a fair share of what they created?

Actually, it was a very good article: well written, slightly humorous, with a good point.

Essentially: we'll never understand the appeal of this thing, unless we can afford it. Or travel on private jets. Which pretty much is the same thing.

If you fly enough, you'll see stuff like this advertised all the time. It was nice to read about someone who carried out my own curiosity.

When I was in college, I once read in the campus police report that a girl's room had been robbed of a $5,000 set of earrings and a $10,000 necklace. From a dorm.

I bet the thief expected a laptop or a really nice sandwich maker.

And Hermes is one of the few remaining companies that still hand makes everything, pays adult artisans a good wage, and pours their money back into the French communities where they're located.

Now I can't really imagine having $27,000 in my pocket and thinking: okay, what do I spend this on? Hmmm. Suitcase! But that's beside the point. The point is that the writer of the article is a dense and ignorant failure at writing, comprehension, and life.

I see we have an idealist in the thread. Or maybe a straight up socialist. You see, while those workers were working their 40 hour work week, and going home and watching TV at night. That owner was risking his money, going into debt, working 120 hours a week building something. The worker gets his salary and the owner gets the riches. It's a really great system.

Whenever I need to buy a suitcase (which is not often), I buy the most expensive one I can afford. If it gets damaged, either the airline will pay for a replacement, or Samonsonite will under warranty (my company of choice).
