Maybe they were savage packs of eagles and someone got confused?

Her dogs -- who are much bigger than beagles -- were too scared to even bark back.

We had a beagle who always used to bark at the bigger dogs. I was always amazed they ignored him instead of ripping his dopey little head off and eating his remains.

"They're certainly not treated as a pet," Green said. "They've lived in crates."

Most are also not spayed or neutered because hunters believe "fixed" dogs lose their hunger for prey.

Two shelters now have five former feral beagles up for adoption between them. And they said that with love and care these abandoned hounds can become loving pets once again."

How do you once again become something you never were?

Are the people in Long Island just retarded because they have never seen wildlife?

round them up and set them loose in Central Park (to take care of the rabid raccoon problem). Win-win? Lose-lose?

So these beagles were barking at this person and their two dogs which equated to being attacked?

Did I miss something here?

Seriously? Abandoning beagles in the woods? What a bunch of heartless bastards. I grew up with beagles that were originally bred for hunting. They lived in the house, were housebroken, spayed and neutered and still hunted rabbits.

I never got the theory that dogs who lived outside devoid of human interaction somehow made better hunters. Beagles are pack dogs. They crave interaction. If their pack is the human family and other animals, they respect that. Our beagles loved cats, babies, other dogs and they hunted rabbits. Maybe they weren't the worlds best hunters, but they enjoyed going out and hunting.

According to local activists, some hunters act like small-time Donald Trumps, firing the dogs that don't do well during the November-to-February hunting season. One told a shelter worker, "If you don't take the dog, I'll shoot it in the head."

Yes, here on Long Island, we have more than our fair share of self-entitled shiatbags.

Beagles are hunting dogs? I though that ended with the 'fox hunts' in England.

I grew up in the midwest -- the only hunting dogs around here are retrievers, usually goldens.

Problem: attacked by savage beagles.
Solution: wear high boots.

One of my brothers and I raised standard beagles as rabbit dogs. Would not sell a puppy to a moran.

As a beagle owner, I'm getting a kick out of this.

Also, the beagle in the article sure is ferocious looking..

Any hunter I know would shoot the guy in the head who abandoned these animals, before shooting one of the beagles in the head.

i have experience with beagles and i wanted to say that when you get them in a pack, they are formidable adversaries, able to stalk prey for miles using their keen sense of smell and unquenchable hunger. my prayers go out to victims of these savage beasts.
ok, that is total b.s., my beagle and his buddies are such cochas. they are the least threatening breed i have ever met. throw them a dog biscuit and they will be happy.

The ones that make it as hunters are also shot in the head-just a few years later.

In my neck of the woods (about 100 miles north of NYC) there's still rich folks in the countryside who ride to hounds. I'm not sure what it is they're supposed to be chasing other than maybe trophy wives.

There's also beagling, which sounds really weird and repulsive but is just riding to hounds without the riding.

Check it out.

Next time we smuggle stock, let's make it something smaller.

Yeah we should start dealing in those black market beagles.

Well, it started off amusing, but in the end all I learned is that hunters are bad. Why, this sort of thing should be legislated.

That's a pic of a basset hound brap.

We live near a spastic beagle that tries to get all kujo on our mastiff - kicks, etc.

I did a search to see who/if that sort of hunting even goes on...I found this:

They don't look like the sort that would do mean things to their dogs, but who knows.

SAVAGE BEAGLES.

I'm sorry, it's tragic, but hilarious.

My father lives out that way, I have to ask him about the savage beagles.

I honestly wish I had the means to adopt one of them. Years ago, I took in a dog in a similar predicament who was almost shot by her owner (she was a pit/boxer mix, with probably some labrador since she had webbed toes) and she turned out mostly okay. Always a bit nutty, but a very good dog all around and I miss her terribly.

So they barked their heads off at these people? Pfft. That's how beagles say hello.

Make great watch dogs because they'll yell and howl when something catches their attention. Make terrible guard dogs because they're usually so friendly.

Someone needs to undo the genetic atrocity these creatures represent.

Beagles can be terrifying. Just this evening I saw my beagle tear apart a cooked chicken breast and devour it.
