I never noticed that DeLoreans have the same grill insert as a Cavalier/Cimarron.

How the hell? Stupid GM.

With a coating that shiny, you'd almost expect it to serve breakfast..

I'll take one with the optional flux capacitor and Mr. Fusion upgrades.

Yeah, he should just put it up on some cinder blocks and railroad ties. That would be much better.

Pretty, but it doesn't fly.

I wonder if you'll be able to see serious shiat upon reaching speeds of 88 MPH...

2010-01-30 07:21:28 PM
It almost looks invisible from some angles. This is not a very desirable thing for a car that expensive, is it? Stealth is fine, but not at 4-way stops.

2010-01-30 07:21:49 PM
Could that be street-legal? Seems like it could blind other drivers.

2010-01-30 07:22:04 PM
I'd hate to be driving behind that thing on a sunny day.

2010-01-30 07:22:06 PM
Wish I could do that just to my back panel for those tail-gaters with the bright lights.

2010-01-30 07:22:38 PM
Want. With or without the extra polishing.

2010-01-30 07:23:03 PM
That's great. Unless you drive during sunlight hours.

2010-01-30 07:23:04 PM
And the maintenance of that finish will require a coke head.

Farking cool looking though.

delorean used to work at pontiac

also--i wonder what would happen if said car is motoring down the highway and the cops pull out a laser for speeding--would the laser just reflect all over the place and not give an accurate reading----does anyone know--or have any clue?

inquiring minds want to know

Subby is a retard who can't do basic research.

From wiki:
The DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) was a short-lived automobile manufacturer formed by automobile industry executive John DeLorean in 1975. It is remembered for the one model it produced - the distinctive stainless steel DeLorean DMC-12 sports car featuring gull-wing doors - and for its brief and turbulent history, ending in receivership and bankruptcy in 1982. Near the end, in a desperate attempt to raise the funds his company needed to survive, John DeLorean was filmed appearing to accept money to take part in drug trafficking, but was subsequently acquitted of charges brought against him on the basis of entrapment.

NOT a coke-head, he just moved a little product to try to keep his company alive.

Imagine you're at a stop sign at night and that thing goes by. Suddenly there are headlights RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU! And then they are gone.

You wouldn't know they were reflections from a mirror polished Delorean, you'd think it was a ghost or something.

I'd guess that it would be a great radar target "reflect all over the place". Bad radar targets aren't polished, they're coated with special radar absorbing materials -- that are often flat black.

Now the boxy shape of the Delorian, well it looks about as aerodynamic as an F-117. So maybe it's got that going for it, but not with a mirror finish.

When shooting laser, you aim for the headlamp or the license plate. Two objects that are designed to reflect light back at same angle it enters. Try shining a laser pointer at either object at a similar angle (less than 30 degreese IIRC) as police do when they're shooting laser or radar and you'll see the reflection just fine.

Don't like to think what I passed up, or how much it would be worth today.

If you can find a Delorean, I would say grab it. Even if you don't gert rich, you have a fun toy.

He he he....I knew a really nice guy who spent something like 6 months with a Dremel tool, mirro polishing a Honda VFR - I mean, that swingarm was a mirror, as were the wheels and frame, etc. It looked really good.

As I was admiring his work, he noted, sort of sadly: "yea, it's cool when it's clean and dry, but 5 minutes of rain and it's 2-3 hours to get it back to this. I sort of regret it because you can't go back!"

You can still buy one, brand new, for about 60K from a company that is making them from old stock left over when DeLorean went under.

in 2002 i was lucky enough to be a security guard at the concourse de elegance car show in pebble beach where they actually had a tucker. i got to sit in it. at that time it was listed at 200,000 to 250,000. it did not sell.

and from what i understand, a company in australia bought every part of delorean and you can now get a brand new one.

This is the best of the 21 motor vehicles I have owned in my life:

motorbike-search-engine.co.uk

It was a 1996 Suzuki GN-125, and I paid $1918 with 3000 miles on the odometer. It was one year old.

I drove it 6 years, put 96,000 hard city miles on it, and it never failed me. It routinely delivered 85 mpg in the city, 95+ on the road; got 109 mpg once on a long trip but that was a fluke; I had a strong tailwind.

Insurance was $35 per year, and it would hit 55 in a dead calm on flat ground. $120 for a regulator rectifier was my only significant repair, other than oil, plugs, tires--stuff you expect to wear out.

It cost me $0.83/day to own it, and I still wish I could find another. It paid for itself three times over in savings.

If you can ever find one---grab it, you will not be sorry. Trust a stupid old fart just once in your life.

At the present time, collectibles are on the rise and a good investment if you know what you're doing. I doubt you could touch a Tucker for $250K today, and the people who passed it in 2002 are now cursing themselves for being so stupid.

This is likely to continue as the Dollar slides down.

In 1970 I also saw American double eagle gold pieces on sale in every bank window, $58 on the buy, $62 on the sell.

They would fetch a minimum of $1500 today, rare mint marks significantly higher. It works out to about 8.3% per year.

The general rule is, you have to be in the right place at the right time with the right money---and you have to know what you are doing.

When I got back from Europe---after passing up the double Eagles and the Messerschmitts---I passed a chance to grab a Ford Fairlane Talladega for $1595 at a Key West used car lot.

It would be worth about $150 large today, but since it would go 185 mph, not much chance either the car or me would have survived that long, not with the lead foot I had at 23!

We get too soon old---and too late smart.
