"Somewhere on this globe, every ten seconds, there is a woman giving birth to a child. She must be found and stopped." Sam Levenson

I love children but I can't bear them.

2010-01-29 11:26:15 AM
Boy, I guess they really *are* precious snowflakes!

2010-01-29 11:34:18 AM
I wonder if those BC methods that stop periods for months would actually extend the number of years a woman has viable eggs?

2010-01-29 11:43:42 AM
So why am I spending all of this money on my wife's tampoons if all of her stuff is gonna leak out anyway??

2010-01-29 11:44:09 AM
Awesome... desperate 20-somethings instead of desperate 30-somethings. Thank you scientists!

2010-01-29 11:45:09 AM
Great, now I have to burn down the internet before my wife finds out.

Thanks science!

2010-01-29 11:45:51 AM
Yes, and?

Besides, you should be having your kids before 30. It's safer, healthier, and you'll live to see your grandkids.

2010-01-29 11:46:13 AM
The bigger deal is that the older the eggs get, the more time there was for chromosomal abnormalities to occur.

It's a good thing old women have a tough time conceiving. Sorry for being harsh.

So no more omelets?

2010-01-29 11:47:12 AM
Good. Now maybe I can find some barren women to date.

2010-01-29 11:47:46 AM
What do I care? I'm a man, baby!

I can squirt a million little suckers into my hand every night!!!!

Ha! Ha! Ha!

Men win!

Hey, any women out there want to get pregnant?
I know a guy that can help with that. ME

2010-01-29 11:48:57 AM
Isnt this just common math? Ladies can start having kids at 13 or so and stop being able to easily by their late 30's. It makes sense to me that, seeing as the eggs head out at a regular interval, most of them would be spent by the end of their 30s.

/goes to read the article to see if Im missing something stupid

Looking back I'm bloody glad the wife and I had children before 30. I currently have a mate going through incredibly expensive IVF and another with a severely disabled Downs child (wife 36). Biological advantages aside, you've got a lot more energy when you're in your mid 20's. The thought of pulling a 70 hour week with severe sleep deprivation doesn't really appeal nowadays.
Last but not least I'm a f*cking sprightly young buck compared to all the other dads I see at the park/school. I rule at sports day.

And sex.

All women should have children as soon as possible! Don't get distracted with nonsense like a "career" or a "personal life." Latch on to the first man (and only a man) who doesn't make you puke and get busy! And don't even think about enjoying it. You have a job to do.

2010-01-29 11:50:10 AM
So what? So long as the number isn't zero, I'm sure the process still works (more or less).

Suck it ladies. You "have it all" career girls will start to get all sweaty and nervous as you approach your mid-thirties, then panic and marry some dumb ass who thinks you love him, just for his sperm donation. But it won't work, because you're too uptight. So you'll end up buying some jizz from a sperm bank, get boffed by a turkey baster and if it finally takes, lie to your old man that it's his. Then, you'll divorce him for the child support, put your 6 month old in "day care," and go back to the office job that makes you feel worthwhile and important.

Me? I can knock up a Korean whore when I'm 79.

Hey - chromosomal abnormalities are how we got from Erectus to Sapiens in the first place. By putting reproduction off, we're increasing our exploration of genotype-space. And at a billion or more people in the "developed world", that's gonna pay off.

2010-01-29 11:51:30 AM
Don't count them before they're hatched now.

2010-01-29 11:52:36 AM
The best part about kids is making them.

2010-01-29 11:53:17 AM
It only takes one.

Two kids, wife was 32yrs and 34yrs for both.

No extra chromosomes.

Well I hate to bring it up because I know you've got enough pressure on you already. But, we agreed to get married as soon as you won your first case. Meanwhile, TEN YEARS LATER, my niece, the daughter of my sister is getting married. My biological clock is
[taps her foot] TICKING LIKE THIS and the way this case is going, I ain't never getting married.

It was at the chromosomal level and not the base pair level? That'd be ridiculously cool if true, any chance you have an article handy?

That and wanting to get boozed up on the weekend. Go places at the drop of a hat. Have regular sex. Get 8 hours unbroken sleep. Not have the entire house covered in piss poor crayon doodles. Actually have a life that doesn't revolve around the whims of a creature with the intelligence of a rhesus monkey.....
My God. What have I done?

HAS NO ONE HEARD OF A FREEZER?

Seriously what's to stop women from having some healthy eggs extracted and frozen for later use?

Oh sorry this is Fark. Misogyny-fest to continue below this post.

This is too bad, because women don't seem to grow up until they're around 30. Most women in their 20s act like immature, flighty, biatchy teenagers. I don't want to date women under 30 and I certainly don't want to have kids with them.

2010-01-29 12:00:07 PM
Obvious news is obvious. This isn't anything doctors haven't been telling women for the last three decades. It is the exact same fertility age range as it's always been.

Money. Or moral/ethical concerns. I'm fine with it, many people are not.

Great, another study pressuring women to have babies in their 20s. Forget your career, woman, your biological clock is ticking and it's gonna stop not long after you're over a half century old.

2010-01-29 12:02:10 PM
Oh and if you RFTA, women are not all the same. Some are born with more eggs. And if you've been having babies for years, fertility seems to extend longer.

Apparently vagina IS a clown car.

Nothing for "Erectus" to "Sapiens", but we do have a chromosome that fused from two separate chromosomes sometime between our common-ancestor-with-chimps and modern humans. That would qualify.

yeah, The wife and I are crossing 40 this year and, frankly, It sucks. I wish I'd met her 15 years ago. Things would have been different then (I could have bought my cheap studio for 500$/month, and would have had it paid off 5 years ago) and Frankly, It would be nice to be 'almost done' with the whole parenting thing rather than looking at changing diapers into our mid-40s.

Also, doesn't the chance for base-pair mutations increase with age as well?

Okay, before EVERYBODY PANICS, bear in mind that during fetal development a fetus maxes out at carrying about six million oocytes. By the time you hit birth, that number has dropped to one million. By the time you hit puberty, that number has hit 300,000. So you've already lost 95% of your eggs before you are even ready to start reproducing. I didn't look at the paper in the article, but assuming the authors used 300,000 as a starting point, that means you have about 30,000 eggs remaining by the time you hit 30. Assuming you and your partner are otherwise healthy, that is plenty to work with during the remainder of your likely childbearing years, so long as you aren't planning on starting your family at age 45.

2010-01-29 12:10:33 PM
GhostfacedFiddlah: Also, doesn't the chance for base-pair mutations increase with age as well?

My guess would be yes, but only based on external mutagens that would get to the egg DNA (like X-rays or radioactivity). If you locked a woman in box for 30 years and kept her X-ray and such free, I'd bet her DNA would be just fine.

2010-01-29 12:10:51 PM
Sheesh, tell me about it. When my wife was 29, she layed all her eggs in a beanbag chair. The racoons just waited for her to go off and feed, then they swooped in and ate our babies :(

Can't believe I'm the first one to say this... we should start having sex with younger women! Lower the age of consent?

WHO'S WITH ME? *silence*
