Hi Dr. Ric!

Crappy season this year...

Well, it takes two to make a thing go right.

I was going to say there's a difference between "figuring out" and "proving" but now all I gotta say is:

OOOOOO! YA!

OOOOOO! YA!

OlafTheBent: Crappy season this year...

Not in the mid atlantic. More snow and snowmaking weather than I've seen in a decade or more.

Now, while we're on the subject of ski resorts bending the truth, let's talk about "loose granular" snow . . .

Yeah, thats called powder now. Loose, packed, powder.

2010-01-29 10:22:59 AM
I submitted this last month when the conditions on the slopes were less slippery.

2010-01-29 10:23:06 AM
Well, every skier knows that groomed pack powder is code for crappy hard pack icey slopes.

2010-01-29 10:25:14 AM
I'll bet that ski area owners all have 12" peeners too.

2010-01-29 10:25:35 AM
hahaha. some excuses i've seen:

- different elevations got different amounts. The official weather stations report the totals at the base elevation. We reported the totals from mid-mountain and the mountain peak, where most of the slopes are.
- we hire planes to salt the clouds, so we actually got more snow than what is reported

i hate when resorts run their snowmaking machines while it is dumping snow. (this is more of an east coast thing, i bet). The poor quality snowmaking snow mixes with and ruins the natural powder.

First of all, it was 4 women with multiple personalities
Second of all, if you're hung like a lightswitch does doubling make it that impressive?

Hahaha, Ric & Romero. You showed them, subby. Hahahaha, they wasted all that time at the slopes when they could have been back at the school holding office hours for a bunch of over eager college kids.

Oh.

I work at an east coast ski resort, so I AM getting a kick out of these replies. If it makes anything better, we hate it at least as much as you do.

Out here in the west, you can always check the Snotel sites to take the exaggeration out of their claims.

2010-01-29 10:39:25 AM
I'm just back from Jackson Hole, where they were claiming 50" or something like that. Grass, dirt, rocks & ice... pretty much a wasted trip.

So yeah, I'd say they were maybe exaggerating just a bit.

FTA: "It doesn't serve you to overreport snow," said JJ Toland, spokesman for Sugarbush Resort. "If you do overreport and make a false promise, people show up and they just become angry that you lied to them and they won't come back."

Also FTA: the above speaker holding up a maple syrup bucket with about twice the collecting area at the top as at the bottom, with the caption "JJ Toland, communications director for the Sugarbush ski resort, holds the maple sap bucket used for measuring snowfall". So, two inches fall into the top, four inches are measured at the bottom...

Which is actually a completely valid and correct point.

My local ski area base is at ~1600'. The top of the mountain is over 4000'. The nearest 'government weather station' is at ~730'.

It is safe to say that the ski hill gets at least 23% more snow than the local weather station.

SwiftFox: So, two inches fall into the top, four inches are measured at the bottom...

I noticed that too. What a moran. Nevermind that you're supposed to use a board like this to measure snow:

I do both well, but this is precisely the reason I went back to skiing: riding is only fun when the conditions are just right. Skiing is always fun. Still have my board, but it's been gathering dust in the basement for a few seasons.

/That, and the new skis I picked up a couple seasons ago have rendered my snowboard an obsolete kid's toy

the issue is not ice.... it is slush, more than anything it is the extra length that makes the Skis nice, otherwise it is like riding on sandpaper.

/only been out 3 times this year when it was not Raining on the slopes.....

Yes, riding bottomless pow is a religious experience. The other 95% of the time it's a pain in the ass.

OlafTheBent: Crappy season this year...

It's been absolute shiat in Quebec.

Earlier this week, it was raining and +10C (about 45F.)

Yesterday, we got about 4 inches of snow.

Today, it's -15C (5F.) And it's supposed to be like this for the next week at least. No new snow.

Fark this. Arizona is getting more snow than us.

2010-01-29 12:44:35 PM
How about on weekends the ski resorts make their own snow, but it's too expensive to do it all week? Thus, their snow depths are consistent with the weather bureau reports on weekdays but not on weekends.

Southern Pennsylvania was similar. Same front, I think. Yesterday was about 45 F and around 4:30 PM the temps dropped like a stone. Today it's about 20 F. Great for the snowmakers though.

Guess that explains folks like me, do not pay attention and act like I own the volcano(we ski on volcanos in these parts).... Must be why I like both skiing and riding.

But a whole team of climatologists can't figure out that all their models are meaningless because the source data was fraudulent.
