"We catch quite a number of tiger sharks off Bundaberg each year," Mr Ham said."

That's because y'all chum the water with surf-tards.

What if the tiger shark forgets his wallet? What then subby?

"At the end of the day the reality is we know they're present all year round."

You'd think somebody would leave a sticky note to remind themselves in the morning.

...told lifeguards his board had been hit by a "large grey shape". Queensland Shark Control Program manager Tony Ham says it was most likely a tiger shark.

That's some mighty fine reporting there, Lou.

"I guess we're warning people to be proactive and be a bit clever."

Either I don't know what "proactive" means or this guy's advice to surfers is: Go out intentionally looking for tiger sharks to punch, and deal with them before they deal with you.

I love me some shark threads.

Sorry, only moderately impressed here, having surfed for a number of years. Not to say punching a shark isnt funny, just not really "HERO" worthy... unless you're a sea turtle. You get bumped, finned, and scraped by all manner of varmint out in the ocean on a board.
The thing that REALLY got my goat? The article had no explanation of how to get on this free drink plan. I was excited.

Poor shark minding his own business until the big, bad surfer starts beating on him.

Don't worry, he'll get his revenge.

2010-01-29 07:41:36 AM
Did he fight off the tiger shark, or beat off the tiger shark?
There is a big difference.

tatum: Tiger Shark

You know what, I think they're scarier than the shark itself.

I came here to register an official protest on the use of the HERO tag.

Reasons for the protest:

(1) He didn't save anyone, except himself.
(2) He was surfing in waters with a known tiger shark population, during a time of year when they are knowing to be feeding.

Seems like he was more deserving of the DUMBASS tag.

I'm not sure if I'd call someone a hero for responding to protect themselves in a potential life/death situation. Now if the guy had dove in to protect an overturned boat of school children carrying puppies, then it might be a different story.

Tiger sharks are bad ass.

This guy got into fisticuffs with a man-eating shark and lived to tell about it. He's no hero. He's a SUPERHERO!

"I guess we're warning people to be proactive and be a bit clever."

Do surfers carry knives? Wouldn't be a bad idea to have a big-ass knife strapped to your waist. At least you could go down with a bit of a fight rather than trying to punch a shark, which would be similar to punching a brick wall.

If he was indeed attacked, it was by a baby and probably smaller than 4 feet. Any bigger and he'd be missing a lot of flesh or a limb and lotso blood.

If you think you can punch a full grown tiger shark away,

you got another thing comin.

Hah, still fighting off cougars yourself? I bought this rock which repels cougars, and ever since then I haven't seen a single cougar nearby.
