Now there's a woman who needs a hobby.

She should join the HOA and walk around with a ruler measuring the length of peoples grass and making sure their blinds are white or alabaster, and not almond or bone.

Somebody should have explained opportunity cost to her.

The "do what is right!!!11!" concept is admirable in many cases; this isn't one of them. Therefore, there's only one reason I have any sympathy whatsoever for this moron:

"[...] and they were after me for 2 cents. They sent me a bill for 2 cents, they expected their money," Maitland said.

Pretty much this. THEY sent HER a bill for a lousy 2 cents. Therefore, the minimum amount they care about is at least 2 cents.

Already, this thread is worth more than the check: .02 times 10.

Just my two cents. Oh, now a 22 cents thread!

I'm OK with this. And here's why.

When she is calling them she is at home, not getting paid. It's like when you're off and just reading or watching TV. So if she wants to waste some of her free time getting her 14 cents back it really costs her nothing.

BUT, when she calls them THEY ARE WORKING. The people she talks to are all on the clock and she's costing them money. So by trying to screw her out of 14 cents they end up costing themselves much more than that. Depending on how often she bugged them maybe much much more.

They lost dollars fighting over cents. She had a nice little hobby.

It's her money. I got no problems with this. If she owed them fourteen cents I guarantee they'd have sent the bill to a collection agency. Fark 'em.

2010-01-29 07:15:02 AM
Headline is misleading. It makes it seem like she's been fighting to get her 14 cents back for 10 years. When you read the article, turns out she's had the same phone service for 10 years, and put $5 on it a decade ago. She recently had 14 cents left on it, and then it disappeared, so she's been fighting for it back for... days? Weeks? Article doesn't say, but it sure as hell hasn't been 10 years.

Well, now you know the whole point. The phone company wanted to be petty and slam her for two cents, and she goes on the offensive and goes for petty times seven.

It's about being an even bigger and bigger asshole to an asshole.

When I dropped my landline over 5 years ago AT&T sent me a bill for money I owed. Two farking cents. I still have the bill hanging on my fridge to remind me how shiatty their service was. I still get letters from them wanting me back. Good riddance.

"It is 14 cents, but it is my 14 cents, and they were after me for 2 cents. They sent me a bill for 2 cents, they expected their money," Maitland said.

There should be a general principle, and I think there is a clause in some of these contracts, saying that at the end of the contract neither side will bother the other if the balance is less than a dollar either way.

I can relate to this woman. Sometimes it's not about the money, it's about justice. For instance i'm still waiting for my free KFC 2-piece chicken meal that was given away last year. I was waiting for my raincheck in the mail and now they said they aren't sending them out anymore, so basically I got lied to and treated like total crap by KFC's customer service. My solution? I purchased 2 domains (kfcripoff.com and kfcfraud.com) and started an internet smear campaign against them. That $3 in food hopefully costs them ALOT more after people see what some liars those people are.

I got a KFC coupon in the mail under somebody else's name. It said non-transferable but they didn't ask for ID. Perhaps it was yours? The grilled chicken is no great shakes. I'd say stick with original or extra crispy.

Sending a bill, which is done automatically, is not "slamming her". If they were calling to collect it I'd agree, but nothing says they did.

And, to the other poster, no collection agency will buy or assist with a 2 cent debt.

Sprint has owed me $7 for more than two years. I have not had any sprint services for over 2 years, yet they send me a statement every month showing an amount due of $-7.00. Why don't they just cut me a check?

I really should call the customer service number and ask them to cut me a check but I can't bear the thought of dealing with there lousy CS department again.

I am never coming back Sprint, get over me already and find someone new.

Are you by any chance looking for work? I run a business that repossesses rented furniture and appliances from desperately poor, hopelessly stupid people who can't pay for it.
I require a sizable staff of self-important, self-righteous douchebags with no sense of proportion or perspective to do this work - and I think you'd be a perfect fit. I pay pretty well, and have a 401K plan (sorry, no medical - can't afford it anymore)- think it over.

Dear Jerk: Anyone who's worked customer service for a phone company has a million of these stories.

I once worked for a company doing software support. We had an algorithm to do with calculating discounts. What we discovered one day was that the algorithm had a bug that it did a multiplication, addition and then round rather than multiplication, round and then add. On two items you can guess what the level of error was... 1 penny.

Some guy phoned up over a bug which overcharged him by 1 farking penny.

I just spent $1.00 of company time reading this thread.

Also, when the phone company takes your fourteen cents, just let it go because, man, it's gone.

Good for her. A business would not forgive a debt, no matter how small, and come after you forever for it. She just returned the favor.

i worked for at&t several years ago when a lot of people still had dial up internet and the best calls were from middle aged women calling to ask what those international calls on their bills were. as a supervisor, it was my distinct pleasure to inform them that they were from where internet porn was being accessed on their computer. there use to be little disclaimers on those sites that explained that by entering the site you would be incurring international charges on your phone bill but no one really read that stuff cuz it was all small font with a lot of other legal jargin. anyway, those were fun calls cuz judging by the fact that the calls were always in the middle of the night, either the womans husband or teenage son was a perv and i had much fun telling them

A few things she may have missed in her psychotic fight: a bird feeder on the ground, her hair looks like shiat, the mailbox tongs are uneven (who the hell uses those type anyway anymore?)and her door is open. And she's holding a check for 14 cents.

I guess she was distracted for a while.

2010-01-29 08:54:37 AM
And here I thought it was going to be a story about the tax put on phone service during the Spanish - American war. The tax was to be removed after thee war was paid for. I think it's still being charged.

2010-01-29 08:56:34 AM
I'm sorry, but how much of a tight-ass are you, if you have to haggle for a decade, for a measly 14 cents?

I could find that much, if not more, just walking around my neighborhood
