The Student Loan game is a fraud. The lenders collect hundreds of millions in interest even though the loans are guaranteed by the federal government. In short they take NO risk for huge gains.

Fortunately, the coming Republican gains in the mid-term elections will more than make up for the dropoff by stimulating the gay porn industry.

Student loans shouldn't be an "industry".

In September of 2008 HUNDREDS of schools were f'd over when they found out that no one would service their loans. The lenders simply said "Sorry, College. I know we told 1500 freshmen we'd handle the $1750 Stafford Loan, but we don't have $2.6 million dollars. Our bad. We'll be on campus on move in day with deceptive credit card offers!!"

Sure, the feds guarantee that the student will get the money, but who processes it? Where does it go?

If you're Harvard, you can float a few million dollars for the month or so it takes to straighten it out. If you're Tuscaloosa community college, not so much.

The FFELP program is a waste of money.

Yeah. Apparently it's starting to chafe a little.

The federal government did a better job, and cheaper, with student loans than private lenders did when given the chance.

oh, maybe, just maybe, they'll ensure that the only people who get loans are the people who would pay it back within 20 years. It might lower the number of theater majors getting $120,000 in debt.

tallguywithglasseson: The federal government did a better job, and cheaper, with student loans than private lenders did when given the chance.

If I'm not mistaken, there's legislation in the works that basically gives the lending power back to the Federal government. Which also renders the point the blogger was trying to make moot.

Not really. That could be a good description for the Deceiver blog writer.

As a soon-to-be 24-year-old with a good job who still can't afford to move out of home because of enormous student loans, I'm sure I'll get a kick out of these replies.

My own fault though. Nobody put a gun to my head and told me not to go to state school. Still think it was worth it to go where I did, just sucks now.

>>>>The FFELP program is a waste of money.

QFT. But TG, SallieMae, and the other big FFELP guns will hang on to their gravy trains by hook or by crook, come hell or high water.

The "job loss is inevitable" in the FFELP student loan industry might be right, but those job losses will be offset by plentiful opportunities that are opening up elsewhere in the industry, either working at institutions as counselors, processors, etc., or working with the other facets of the industry. DOE (Education Department) has plenty of folks retiring from G12 positions regularly, and if Direct Loan volume increases, there are opps there.

Servicers and institutions can't find enough qualified FSA administrators. Those poor folks will just have to suck it up and find another job somewhere else in the FSA industry...there's plenty of them to be found if you have the experience.

The cool thing about the Government taking over the student loan industry is that it will be able to tell students what they can and cannot get degrees in. Sorry, no Arts History degree for you!

You're stupid. The government taking over the stafford loan program is the same thing as the government taking over the VA.

You want a Sallie Mae or Citibank student loan? Knock yourself out. The stafford loan is only a small piece of the student loan industry.

You do know that the federal government already gives out grants to students, right?

And that federal backed student loans make private industry money with little/no risk of default?

Maby it was the Government lady in the UK who was the person sent to say "NO" to any new operation on my Grandma who was over 80.

She directly said, that the money for health care was better spent on the kids, and not on old folks who need a new knee. She did offer a free wheelchair. How kind of her.

Thats when I got pisssed of at the Nanny State.

We in the evl USA paid for that new knee, and she walked.
