Riiiggggght.... the flag that was over the Pentagon on September 11th just happened to be there in Baghdad at precisely the right time.

2003-04-12 09:28:26 PM
Of course it was staged. There are people who actually don't believe that?
Propaganda for the world to see. Happy dancing Iraqis, flags there on hand. Yeah. Coincidence.

It was cool to watch, though;)

The most important part of this story was buried at the end:

When one of the few remaining "human shields" in Baghdad, Uzma Bashir, from Rickmansworth, baited the troops with shouts of "Yankee murderers", Cpl Ibrahim Rahim exploded: "I scooped up the brains of two young marines ... They died fighting to liberate Iraq. And you stand here insulting them with this shiat." He added: "I am a Muslim ... and I know this region. That woman is seriously abusing her right of speech."
Captain Brian Lewis, a tank commander, said: "All we are trying to do is create the conditions for representative government."

Human shields are so utterly clueless. You'd think it would occur them that if the people you're supposedly trying to help don't want your help something is wrong.

Dr. Toast-
Is that photoshopped?

2003-04-13 01:22:00 AM
But not before acres of TV footage had been shot.

How exactly does one measure TV footage in acres?

Either I am REALLY drunk/tired, or that is the most poorly written article ever. I can't even decipher the first paragraph...

2003-04-13 01:22:55 AM
So, think they made the sign themselves or had a little help? In any case it's OK cause the S&P FUT is up 2.7!!!!!11

Good point. One would think linear feet or meters of videotape, or maybe terabytes of bandwidth, but acres?

2003-04-13 01:24:45 AM
yeah, that's retarded. but i like the independents logo. that's all i get from this load of shiat. besides the sinking suspicion of another flame war.

Jack - I don't think it's Photoshopped... it's been shown on multiple News sources

2003-04-13 01:26:00 AM
And once more, the American public is duped into associating Saddam with September 11.

There's plenty of good reasons to be glad he's gone, so there's no need to make shiat up.

Thank you and good night.

Oh man...that's pretty good then. Keeping a sense of humor in the face of everything that's happening/happened. I wonder if the cable news channels have trouble with their standards and practices departments over the word "wanker." Maybe nobody at FOX news knows what it means.

I wonder how much further fark can slant to the left before it's just vertical?

DrToast: I think that sign is just suppose to say "Go Home U.S. Wankers" iirc most of the humanshields were from europe. I mean going to Iraq from the US would require these kids to either give up protesting for a living and get a job to pay for the flight or ask mommy and daddy for money. And getting a protester to do anything productive is like getting a hippy to shower.. odds are against it happening. I could be wrong and sure some farker will be sure to correct me.

2003-04-13 01:31:06 AM
I don't think that you have to show a link between September 11th and Saddam to get some satisfaction out of putting the flag from the Pentagon on Saddam's face. Someone over there hit us...we hit someone over there a hell of a lot harder. It's the satisfaction of hitting back..that's all. If you've looked at pictures on msnbc then you've seen that the barrels of the artillery and tanks are marked with things like "The Punisher". One of them had a United Airlines flight number from 9/11. That flag has been in the line of fire, right here on our soil...at the nexus of our military. Now it's been at the sight of the symbolic fall of a middle-east tyrant...and that's just fine with me.

2003-04-13 01:31:46 AM
triumphalism is that a word?

2003-04-13 01:32:31 AM
Remember, the average American doesn't read newspapers or really care about what flag was on a statue's face a few thousand miles away so no matter what your opinion is, it doesn't really matter. Let's all go back to living in fear. It's code Orange dammit!

Iraqis insulted the American human shields with British slang. Weird.

The "acres of footage" was in reference to the fact that almost every major media outlet and then some was there during that "unstaged" event.

The amount of footage shot from every TV crew there would likely fill up an acre or two.

Hello_Kthullu

I'm sure there were at least some U.S. human shields, but I think you are right that most of them were European. The Iraqi's probably just assumed they were American.

2003-04-13 01:52:23 AM
Anybody who actually saw it live would know that it could not have been staged. It was far too chaotic and clumsy for that. They tried a bunch of times to get up to the damn statue using different methods and people jury-rigging things to make it work, and then when they got up there the guy put the American flag on Saddamm - something American commanders in Centcom and politicians in Washington desperately DID NOT want to see - soldiers had already been reprimanded for flying the flag in liberated cities on the way to Iraq.

So it's pretty clear - it was way to messy to have been staged and it was something we obviously DID NOT want to see there. Soldiers had gotten in trouble for flying the flag before - we didn't want ourselves to seem like conquerers.

So all you people who are still upset that you were wrong about the war seem even more utterly pathetic now - trying to come up with anything you can to tarnish this brilliant operation and give life-support to your on-the-ropes, partisan viewpoint which turned out to be completely wrong in every respect.

Sweatergirl-

Happy Iraqis??? They're happy all over the country - Mosul, Tikrit, Basra - everywhere has seen thousands of pictures and feet of tape and film shot of Iraqis dancing, hugging soldiers, waving American flags - it's everywhere.

So why should, say, the center of Iraq's largest city be completely devoid of a bunch of its own people that are all estatic that they aren't getting tortured and murdered anymore???

Man the left is so stupid...

Those were fake too. The army pulled thousands of Iraqi's out of their asses and planted them in Iraq to pretend to be happy.

...the US army banned any display of the flag on vehicles, buildings, statues and command posts...
...they were the same people who chanted "My blood, my spirit, I shall die for you O Saddam"...
...Cpl Ibrahim Rahim added: "I am a Muslim ... and I know this region. That woman is seriously abusing her right of speech."...

Well. Seems like things are going rather smoothly over there.

2003-04-13 02:08:43 AM
Staged? I was watching it live on tv. The locals were climbing all over the statue and trying to get a rope around it to pull it down, but the rope was too short. They were pounding at the base with a sledge hammer. After a while the marines finally came in and did a proper pulling down. The whole thing was rather unorganized and took almost two hours to unfold.

2003-04-13 02:19:39 AM

Ok. The deal is, an American flag was draped over Saddam's statue. Then, they exchanged it for an Iraqi flag. Get over it. The media drones on about this like it will turn the tide of war in Saddam's favor (if he's still alive) and he will all of a sudden pull victory from the jaws of defeat. Over a flag. Jeebus, I nominate this for the most overblown story of 2003.

P.S. The reason I like being a liberal is to see all the conservative republicans act like their panties are in a bunch. The bartender at my bar is as diehard conservative as they come, and we have some good arguments. I hope he doesn't rub his hands on his balls before he serves me beer.

How has anyone been proved wrong about the war? There was never any doubt that the coallition forces were going to win from a military point of view. Now that this has been achieved, it has no bearing one way or the other about the legitimacy of the invasion.

We were told that the invasion was to get rid of Saddam's WMD and reduce the terrorist threat. If vast stockpiles of these weapons had been found, then you could say the invasion was justified. However, to date, nothing of note has been found.

From a terrorism viewpoint, the threat is now greater than it was before the war. The Arab world has now had 3 weeks of bombed marketplaces and dismembered babies shown on their TV screens 24 hours/day. Many formerly moderate Arabs see this as an attack against Islaam and are now vehemently anti-U.S.

You might think that the use of precision weapons was a good thing to reduce the number of civilian casualties. However, I saw a Lebanese show which twisted this to give the impression that this new precision was being used to target babies. You and I know this is nonsense but, if you're an Arab who isn't getting the other side of the story, you might be pissed off enough to take a trip to your nearest Al-Qaeda recruiting office.

Do you have any sort of proof that the terrorism threat is great? By your logic Al Qaeda should have been stronger after Afghanistan since Al Jazeera was showing those same images during that war. However, it's pretty clear Al Qaeda is nowhere near the strength they were at a few years ago.

I've seen a few articles that some in the Arab world are actually getting disillusioned with the crap their religious leaders are telling them. Especially after seeing Iraqi's dancing in the streets cheering the U.S. military and hailing the downfall of Saddam Hussein.

2003-04-13 02:48:46 AM
Most Arabic countries are happy to see Saddam go, they are, however, very worried that the US plans to stay.

DrToast

Are you watching CNN?

Sadler got fired on by guys with machine guns, but he got into Tikrit, and wisely got the fark out when he was told he would have to get permission to film from the Governor of Tikrit.

Tikrit isn't so quiet when the locals are firing on your vehicles.

It looks like an attempted ambush or something bad.
