But seemingly not by management. Darryl Sutter was apparently on the East coast last week scouting for the hypothetical trade to come, but nothing has materialized yet.

Yeah, not so sure why everyone worships Darryl. They went to the Finals and lost in 2004. What have they done since? Sutter has wasted Iginla's best years while giving him NO support up front, the defence is solid, but taking up too much cap space, and Kipper needs a real goalie to back him up.

When I look at the Flames I see Iginla, Langkow, Bourque, Jokinen (when he shows up, which is rarely) and a bunch of fourth liners, a solid defence, and a good goalie (sometimes great). There's no depth up front and that's killing them. They're not going to even make the playoffs, let alone be the Cup contender everyone seems to think they are.

agreed. They have not looked good. Nice to see Zubrus come back. but hes way off form. Elias needs to be back too. Rough patch for the guys in Newark. But its the devils they'll bounce back and get on a roll.

I'll give you the Cup contender comment, but not make the playoffs? Please. This is the first bad losing skid they've had this season and there's 30 games left to correct it. Previous to now, they had never been lower than 7th.

Yeah, the skid is bad, but it's not sky-is-falling bad. The skid will end, they will go back to a decent winning percentage and make the playoffs.

Even as a rabid Blackhawks fan, I thought maybe they should have dropped to 2nd or 3rd. Then I read their logic for keeping them at 1st and I decided they were right. They may occasionally lose, but they rarely get beat.

Who are you planning on knocking out? Phoenix, LA, and Nashville look like they're there to stay, which leaves you with catching Detroit or possibly Colorado. And what makes you think the Flames aren't just sinking into an inescapable pit of suck that will drown their season?

L.A. is 5 points ahead, Nashville only 3, and the Red Wings a mere 1. Hardly an insurmountable obstacle to make a playoff spot with 30 games left in the season.

The Shoveller: And what makes you think the Flames aren't just sinking into an inescapable pit of suck that will drown their season?

Because losing streaks happen. There's still plenty of time left. Kiprusoff is still playing very well despite the losing streak (with the exception of the disaster in San Jose). And I'm almost certain there's some sort of trade in the mix which may also help out.

They got 44 shots because the Canucks had the game locked up early and let them shoot from the perimeter. They only managed a cross box pass once or twice in the game despite getting huge powerplay time.

Chicago was Beat with a capital B.
These ESPN rankings are just based on pure opinion. I can't even imagine what they would say if Chicago were beating the top teams with their top 3 defence injured.

The Canucks have been closing the gap with the top GF-GA teams since they got mostly healthy in December

ESPN's rankings make no sense to me.

Last week, my Sabres were on a really hot streak and tied for 1st in the East, and dropped 2 spots in the rankings.

This week, they've just finished a rough Western road swing in which they're currently on a four-game skid, and yet they go up a spot. Go figure.

Absolutely. These hockey writers need to understand that the NHL is a man's sport. Not some pussified game that Bettman is trying to sell.
You don't drop 'em if you don't intend on fighting. What was Carcillo supposed to do? Let Gaborik hit him and say "Aw, isn't that cute"? No. You take the other team's superstar off the ice for 5 minutes. I would have been pissed if he didn't oblige Gaborik's INVITATION TO FIGHT!

I think the same way about the Flames. Although I would include weak scouting attributable to 2-3 other Sutters working in jobs they aren't qualified for, along with Darryl -- the only GM in league history unable to ice a full lineup because doing salary cap math is hard. It doesn't take a genius to figure out there are better backup goalies available at prices better than McElhinney. Flames teams in recent years suck in the second half of the season, so starting a losing skid early is bad news for them. Maybe the Olympic break rest, and a trade will help. Missing the playoffs is now a real possibility, although you have to figure they make it and then lose in the first round. While they do have more goals against than they have scored, they're only -1 which is good enough for 12th in the entire league (and they're 13th in the league by wins, so right about where they ought to sit. They got lucky earlier and the luck has balanced itself to even)

In the last 12 games (month of January) the Caps have a +27 goal differential and are 10-2. Including trouncing the Sens 5-2.

Ottawa is +2 in January and are 8-5 including getting trounced by the Caps 2-5.

If you are referring to the win streak BOTH teams are on a 7 game streak, during which the Caps have 36 GF and 17 GA for a +19 and the Sens have 23 GF and 7 against for a +14.

So the Caps still have the edge. Plus the Caps are looking at a 3 game home stand to finish out the month.

Is that okay for a word?

It was a seven-game roadtrip, but whatever.

I'm not terribly concerned about the current skid. Every team goes through some ups-and-downs in the season. Not like the Sabres have been getting blown-out or badly out-played on their current trip. Lost a few close ones in a row. Just have to get back on track at home, starting against New Jersey tonight.

FINALLY. jeez.

Anyways, if we don't beat Dallas, we will just have to beat the Oilers on Saturday. which will be fine.

As it is, its just a losing streak, to test the mettle of the fans. and I have been paying attention to those whose faith is weak.

Now that the Flames are out of a playoff spot they will start playing with intensity again, because it seems like they need to have the fear of God in 'em to produce.

7 goals against in 7 games vs 17 goals against in 7 games is a pretty telling statistic. I know the Caps score a ton but come playoff time you're gonna want to tighten that up a bit. Who knows though, maybe Varlamov plays lights out when he gets back, maybe Theodore regains his Vezina/Hart form for the playoffs. But 2.43 goals against per game during a hot streak? Hope they don't slump at all when it counts or a second round exit won't be much of a surprise.

Rev.K: Pile it on, Canucklehead, pile it on. When the Burrows-Sedin-Sedin circus ends (and it will) we'll see where you're at.

I thought they were the Sedin Sisters to you, Burrows had a one-and-done good season, and that it was only because of Luongo we were winning.

Flames top goals per game:
Iginla 0.4
Bourque 0.37
Lundmark 0.27

Canucks top goals per game
H Sedin 0.46
Burrows 0.44
D Sedin 0.41
Raymond 0.35
Samuelsson 0.35
Kesler 0.25

Meanwhile even with all the injuries to the backend, they still have 2.4 GAA while Calgary's healthy "all-star" back end only has 2.5 GAA. I think the Canucks will manage, even if H Sedin was supposed to drop out of the scoring race 30 pts ago

Calgary's not just in a skid, they either have to wait for other teams to lose or they have to fix their team because otherwise they'll just stay at this level they've been at all year

It would be nice to tighten it up but everyone is scoring right now, if we had 1-2 guys lighting the lamp consistently I'd be worried but when a guy like Knuble is getting consistent multi-point nights it's pretty telling that not many teams are stopping them.

Plus when they go up 3-4 goals in the first it's pretty easy to let down and give up a couple sloppy goals. They aren't playing many tight games right now.

All year? So like when we were ahead of the Canucks for 3 months?

It's a skid. All teams have them. It will end. We will make the playoffs. And for the love of Christ, I WANT the Canucks in the first round, because Flames hatred of Vancouver will propel them to victory.

The Sharks had a 4 point lead over Chicago when the list was published. They beat #15, #9, #16 and #5. They have a 5 game winning streak. Also, eight of those goals were one-period freakouts by their rookie. Neuvy needs a little more seasoning before he's ready to back Varly up, and luckily we have Theo playing well enough that he gets pulled in the third just for kicks. Varly will tear things up when he gets back - that kid's a prodigy.
