Milk ethics: cereal business.

I'm not an animal rights hippie at all. Milk is disgusting enough on its own. Even if it fell from the sky like rain, I would still find this thick fatty fluid repulsive.

This. I would sooner drink the malt they make whiskey from than milk. I would sooner eat raw baking soda than drink milk. Milk is an important source of things to make cheese, yougurt and every once in awhile to pour on a woman being assaulted by a puppet in the shower.

You should not drink it.

Try almond milk. I defy ANYONE to choose homoginized cow piss over the delicious white nectar of almonds.

You're gonna need a bigger obvious tag.

I've been to the dairy where I get my milk. I've seen how they treat them and it's quite nice.

Meh.

We de-horn all our cows. It makes them less aggressive and much safer to be around.

As for factory dairy farms, they are probably the worst. I've been on a private dairy farm and the cows were all treated like family.

Besides, cows don't have brains.

2010-01-27 09:12:54 AM
I don't care if the farmer needs to rape the cow on an hourly basis for the creamy goodness.

I still get my milk in glass bottles from a local dairy co-op or a family friends farm.

FTFA: huge ... dairy operation

Well, there's your problem. It's a question of economics. Huge farms suck, but they're massively profitable. This is why small family farms should be encouraged, because they do their best to do everything sustainably.

But those poor hops. Forced to grow on hanging tendrils instead nice ground cover.

I can't drink milk anyway (lactose intolerant) so I drink something called "Coconut Milk." Probably a lot like the almond milk drink. But I still buy for my family. I'm definitely in favor of paying a little more for organic and "free-range" animals providing the food. I wish more farms who treat their animals well would put that fact in their ads. I think more folks would respond to that in a positive way.

Lilmama: I'm definitely in favor of paying a little more for organic and "free-range" animals providing the food.

A little secret about organic animal products: They're not allowed to use antibiotics or they'll lose their organic status, so the animals often suffer from easily treated ailments rather than being given antibiotics to clear them up.

True, this is a response to factory farms indiscriminately giving antibiotics to entire herds, but if you have two equally nice farms it's usually nicer for the animals to go to the one that's free-range rather than organic.

\Buys free range beef rather than organic for this reason

Seriously? Boobs are not safe for work? Somebody should tell that to Gina down in accounting.

This is precisely why I don't drink a lot of milk and when I do it's organic, from reputable stores and labels. I'm a huuuuuuge fan of the Promsied Land chocolate milk.

And when I get pizza, holy crap you better believe it's not from any of those chains. Yech.

THIS. Buy from local farmers and markets, the food's better and you're stimulating the local economy.

2010-01-27 10:53:56 AM
It makes me want to buy milk from the local Dairy, not get it up. Dairy milk is a million times better anyway.

2010-01-27 10:54:16 AM
I probably haven't had a drink of milk in 10 years. I eat cheese like a motherf*cker, but one day I just stopped drinking milk and eating ice cream. I don't know why. When I want cereal, I just use soy milk. It tastes better to me than regular milk ever did.

Cool story, I know.

This. You want to buy the $2.99/gal milk at the gas station? Go for it, but don't be surprised at the tradeoffs necessary to get it down to that price.

I find the thought of drinking cow milk repulsive.

May I pose a question?

Why do we drink milk meant for a calf and not milk meant for humans? Would you drink breast milk as an adult?

Soy juice.
