Oh, this one is gonna get good!
2003-04-11 08:50:46 AM
Here let me set this topic up for you.

/flame on

Ok, now we are all set.
2003-04-11 09:07:47 AM
Not that it matters. If history judges Bush harshly--and it probably will--it won't be for screwing up as a young smart aleck, but for getting us into this damn fool war.

now I know why they don't call it The Straight Unbiased Dope.

(sorry, had to throw some gasoline on it just to make sure.)
2003-04-11 09:14:37 AM
Now I know who Bush is.

He's Frank Burns.
2003-04-11 09:15:51 AM
Somehow I see this being Clinton's fault. Only time will tell in this flame war...
2003-04-11 09:16:21 AM
I don't like [president] bush, but if daddy can pull some strings, more power to him. What are parents for, anyway?
2003-04-11 09:17:13 AM
Dear God-
I am already afraid of this thread. Please send rain.
2003-04-11 09:17:39 AM
Actually, Blackvampyr you just closed the flame tag.
2003-04-11 09:18:57 AM
BILL CLINTON is an idol.
Is there a guy on FARK who would say NO to a bj at work?
2003-04-11 09:19:26 AM
Probably because Democrats figured they'd get Clinton's draft-dodging thing thrown back at them.

Not to mention the fact that one of Al Gore's advisors can be directly linked to East Timor, not that you saw that in the papers or on the news.
2003-04-11 09:19:56 AM
Yes, that was a highly unbiased article... very unbiased. (snickers due to moron democrat lefties and all their sillyness)
2003-04-11 09:20:06 AM
Bush was coked out and drunked up with a high flying crowd in Austin. Some say he was bi during this period. He never saw Alabama.
2003-04-11 09:20:36 AM
Is it safe in here or do I need some kind of protection?

If history judges Bush harshly--and it probably will--it won't be for screwing up as a young smart aleck, but for getting us into this damn fool war

not the least bit of predjudice in this article.
2003-04-11 09:21:56 AM
wait, cecil, you're telling me that politicians use influence to get what they want? i don't get it.

i could care less if he dodged the draft. just don't stare blankly at me from my TV and tell me that you are the one qualified to send actual soldiers into battle.

2003-04-11 09:22:30 AM
I personally don't see a connection between military service and being the president. I would rather have a president who is smart/powerful/wealthy/etc. enough to get out of military service than one that isn't. I feel more at ease when the powerful are in power. And when the leaders are wealthy. I have this crazy notion that a poor/average wealth person would spend the national budget on lottery tickets, curly-q fries, and $8 beer at auto races.
2003-04-11 09:22:49 AM
Wait a minute. An inconsistent politician? Say it ain't so. Next thing you'll be telling us Dubya really didn't institute the Texas school system reforms he was credited with. Or that he didn't try to veto the Health Care reforms he took credit for in the 2000 campaign.

2003-04-11 09:23:17 AM

Betcha no one else will say THAT in this flame-thread!
2003-04-11 09:23:34 AM
Don't forget Klinton or Gore's distinguished record.
2003-04-11 09:23:35 AM
Soooo......who took your spot in Vietnam, George? Why dontchya give him (or his heirs) a medal?
2003-04-11 09:23:50 AM
What's the over/under for posts on this thread?
2003-04-11 09:23:55 AM
q. did you hear a heckler threw a beer at w ?
a. yeah -- it was a draft, so he dodged it !

/runs away
2003-04-11 09:23:58 AM
Well, that was unbiased. Completely reft of editorial comment, rumor, hearsay, and opinion too.

I personally don't see a connection between military service and being the president.

There is a connection between military service and Commander-In-Chief.
2003-04-11 09:24:16 AM
What an excellent article.

2003-04-11 09:25:05 AM
You know, I thought I could count on Cecil and the Straight Dope to remain impartial, or at least offer up an illusion of impartiality. After all, he is trying to offer us the "straight dope," which I would take to mean an unbiased, clear look at the facts.

He did a fine job on clearing the air on GWB's National Guard stint (except for that thing about "some people" "speculating" that GWB "might" have been using drugs -- let's hear it for the passive voice) but that potshot at the end was really uncalled for.

I guess I'm going to have to take everything else I read at TSD with a larger grain of salt than I usually reserve for seemingly legitimate websites.
2003-04-11 09:25:12 AM
Didn't most of us know all this when we ELECTED him!

I hope SARS wipes us all out within the month and everyone can finally shut the fark up.

war, no war, war, no war, war, no war...

Holy farking tired...
2003-04-11 09:26:34 AM
Guy Incognito:

"Now I know why they don't call it The Straight Unbiased Dope."

Can you please point out the article parts you consider "biased" ?
2003-04-11 09:26:36 AM
I just want to go on record as saying I don't give a fark.
2003-04-11 09:26:53 AM
So if instead of Bush, we had Dole in there, everyone would be hunky dory with the war and his leadership?

Also, I would argue that his military background is VERY distinguished. By that I mean it can be easily distinguished from somebody's who has a long and admirable one.
2003-04-11 09:27:09 AM
and, just to show i'm not biased...didn't gore just take pictures during vietnam? wasn't he a reporter or something? at least he actually left the states, but i don't think that qualifies him to say he was in the shiat.

max: were you in the shiat?

herman: yeah, i was in the shiat.
2003-04-11 09:27:10 AM
I feel more at ease when the powerful are in power. And when the leaders are wealthy.

Wohoo! Sadam Hussien for Prez! If that's your criteria, the 2004 elections should be a breeze for him. (Well, okay, would have been a breeze a couple of weeks ago...)
2003-04-11 09:27:25 AM
oh yeah, I almost forgot to say one thing:

2003-04-11 09:27:27 AM
The dems, and you libs, are really panicked now. It is SO MUCH FUN to watch, especially during a time of war, the comic relief supplied by the left is just priceless.
2003-04-11 09:27:29 AM
So you are saying that a rich kid didn't have to fight in Vietnam? Wow, you learn something new every day.
2003-04-11 09:27:33 AM
Bush had a silver spoon up his nose, how about you?
2003-04-11 09:27:33 AM
Oy vey, this is going to get ugly. Call me when comment # gets up to 400 or so.

2003-04-11 09:28:09 AM
Oh, and the picture of the SbB girl in the black bikini top is going to get me fired.
2003-04-11 09:28:27 AM
It's too bad the Walken character in the Deer Hunter is dead, and, you know, fictional, because he'd make a sweet President.
2003-04-11 09:28:44 AM
Thanks a lot 9ign. You've ruined my mojo!
2003-04-11 09:29:03 AM

Contrary to popular belief, most of the decisions made in higher levels of government made by the president are made though the ideas of his advisors. There are people whose job it is to tell the president what he should do. And believe it or not, the president doesn't write his own speeches either.
2003-04-11 09:29:03 AM
Straight Dope? Is this the sister publication to Mainline Heroin?
2003-04-11 09:29:24 AM
George W Bush was the result of an unholy union between an Italian tank and a particularly craven French peasant woman. He's got 10 reverse gears and a mustache.
2003-04-11 09:29:43 AM
farked already!? it must be a conspiracy
2003-04-11 09:29:58 AM
I'm usually the first to consider Straight Dopes to be closest to the truth as possible because of Cecil's investigative skills. But this article pretty much is just built upon "the story is generally agreed upon" and "The Boston Globe says..." and "The New Republic says..." and not much else.

Ok, I can take Cecil's word for it. I believe in his trust of whatever sources he used. But then he goes and says "...but for getting us into this damn fool war."

Oh Cecil, Cecil. That's ok, I forgive you for being the liberal that you are and letting it cloud your (usually) better judgement.
2003-04-11 09:29:58 AM
Hey Champship, from one vet to another: certainly you know Carter tried to get the hostages out, even though the attempt failed.
2003-04-11 09:30:11 AM
If Bush Sr. was a congressman at the time, he probably had a security clearance. I have known people who can not travel to certain foreign countries because of the same reason... Their parents had secret or better clearances.

Something to think about before you blame the President or accuse him of being unpatriotic.
2003-04-11 09:30:51 AM
You don't have to criticize him based on his military experience, he's a farking born again Christian. And I've made a rule to never trust people who turn to religion at the lowest point in their life, versus ohh say turning to God at your peak.

Look at it this way, would you ever trust a motovational speaker with your children?
