If they change the spot on this, that's is utter horseshiat. No way you can overturn this conclusively.

srhp29: cptjeff: tootse: cptjeff: And the coin flip that has a 75% chance of determining who goes to the superbowl is coming up...

Isn't it more like 60%

I'm pretty sure it's higher then 60, but that's off the top of my head.

It's still way too much though.

From the 2000 through 2007 regular seasons, there have been 124 overtime games. In every single game except one (I believe), the team that won the toss elected to receive. And those receiving teams won 60% of the time (and tied once). That's a relatively large advantage, particularly when compared to home field advantage

Who the F didn't take the ball in overtime?

What pct of games does the team that losses the turnover battle 5-1 win?

As a Lions fan, I remember this well. It was the Lions who decided to take the wind instead of the ball, and lost in OT. They just invent ways to lose...

DamnYankees: I've never seen the yellow line be that different from the chains before. How does that happen?

Looks like they were off to start with.

Yeah, she is NOT a sweetie, sorry boys. Sweeties don't let anyone take pictures like that.

I don't find her all that attractive anyway.

RevLovejoy: Lost Thought 00: Has there ever been a double OT game?

Several. KC-Miami '71, Colts-Raiders ('77?)

VERY different rules back then though... today's rules suck.

2010-01-24 10:07:11 PM

nelsonal: the1hatman: So the Saints win the toss and drive down for the winning score without the Vikings and Brett Favre ever getting another chance and we will FINALLY get something better than the NFL's current ball of suck that is their OT rules.

/a guy can dream

Best change, the coaches bid on where they'd like to start in overtime. Farthest back gets the ball. Don't laugh when safetys decide overtime games.

I prefer the simple plan of each team gets 1 possession then sudden death after that if necessary. That way the coin flip is not so huge and you don't change the way the game is played too much from regulation.

/we all know that makes WAY too much sense for the NFL to switch to

If the Vikings lose today, he'll be back next year. He's not going out this way.

2010-01-24 10:07:27 PM

bionicjoe: It's about 80%.

You people are pulling these numbers out of your a**, it is not 75 and it is not 80...

This is from 2007...

Failing at the critical football skill of choosing heads or tails usually is fatal. In regular-season games from 1974 through 2006, the NFL reports, the winner of the toss has won 53 percent of the games, the loser has won 43 percent, and 4 percent have ended in ties. Fully 29 percent of the games have ended on the first possession.

53% have won... but only 29% have done so on the first possession of the OT. In other words, in the games the winner of the toss wins, they do it on something other than their first OT possession almost half the time.

There has to be a better way though...maybe give the other team a "chance to tie" if the team who gets the kick scores on first possession...?

Ya know what, I don't even care any more - just stop this foolishness.

Send both teams to Miami next weekend. Cancel the Pro Bowl, give both teams a speech about gittn r done, and have 'em just start over.

Or maybe Peyton just plays eight quarters in two weeks, I don't care.

But really, these teams are not going to do anything else good today. It's obvious, just look at them.
