The beer pipe is a 50 year old running joke organised by generations of over-refreshed technical students at the outlet, and encouraged by the brewery at the other end. The beer pipe they demand used to be about 5 km's long, but the local brewery moved away and the thirsty students now need an extra 95km's.

Sometimes the comments are the best informer.

Just as an exercise:

100km pipeline + 5km (it won't be a straight line...) x say 120mm (~5in) dia = 1187.5m3 = 1.187 Million litres (313,700 gallons for you heathens). That's unpressurised. If that pipeline isn't going to every house it passes on the way, then its a hell of a waste of beer....

/Why yes, I AM bored, how could you tell?

FTFA: The stock purchase ... allowing them an opportunity to push the brewery to build a roughly 100 kilometre long pipeline to the university in order to facilitate the supply of beer to the Chalmers' student union.

This even beats my regular fantasies, unless you count the one where trapped in a swedish coed dorm and forced to be their smut muffin while being fed only on beer and pizza.

/yeah, it's like that

Clicking through the links and I saw this (new window). I submitted it, found out someone already had, and it wasn't listed?!? Young Swedish lesbians everywhere and it didn't get listed?

Fark is dead to me now.

They should get a pipeline from Dugges Ale & Porterbryggeri or Oceanbryggeriet instead. Closer and much better beer. (Both links pop)

/I'm a swedish homebrewer and beernerd so I am really getting a kick out of these replies...

I'm saying the pipeline was an idea before the building moved 95km away. Now it's a dumb idea. Both sides think it's a funny joke now.

while having a beer pipeline sounds like an awesome idea you'd need a continuous flow and a certified clean pipe. Contaminants fark up the taste something fierce. I suppose if you have a local brewery and it got piped and metered to local pubs it might work. But a college would leave stagnant beer for three months out of the year, requiring the pipe to be flushed.

Alternative headline: Swedes want to lay pipe for beer.

THAT'S QUITTER TALK!!!! YOUR BEING RIDICULOUS!! You'll never get what you want with that attitude. Write your congressman, that's stimulus money that would benefit many states and create jobs.

/Just because that said pipe line would have to make land fall in New Jersey, is no reason why I as a New Jersey resident would have an opinion on this.

I was in Sweden Last September. As hyped up as the Swedish women are, I was not so impressed. Danish girls on the other hand...

On top of the women not living up to the legendary beauty, the beer is Sweden is crap. "Strong" beer has 4% alcohol, while the average has around 3%. Not only that, but it is wicked expensive. The club scene in Stockholm is more pretentious than the most uptight New York lounges infested with sleazy iBankers and trustifarians.

Thankfully I flew out of Stockholm after 4 days for the opening weekend of Oktoberfest in Munich...

They gave you 4% "strong" beer?
You are not liked by swedes apparently.

Hah, my former university! This is an old tradition and a running joke. Just for fun in one of my first weeks, we did calculate on flow rate to keep the beer fresh. With about 8,000 students on campus, it basically came out to each and everyone having to get hammered every day. I think it amounted to around 1-1.5 gallons of beer/day for every student. :)

It happened occasionally that we could drink that much, but not sustained for months on end.

So, these demonstrations serve no purpose. It's just all for fun, because they can.

Blue Eyed Devil: You got ripped off. Serves you for not visiting the right clubs. Södermalm in Stockholm is much better and you have a much better chance of ending up at a place that serves real beer. Wouldn't drink that weak shiat they pass off as beer in those clubs, either.

Jag tycker om Sverige and everything but... why is there no good beer in this country?

I mean on tap you usually have Pripps, Falcon, that other one from Götland... I have yet to have a great or even good Swedish beer. Any Swedes want to help me out here?

Besides the beer, and the lack of sunlight, this place is utopia.

The stuff they sell at the cheap pubs is horrible. Everything from Dugges bryggeri is awesome.

I'm curious as to what Swedish students looks like, particularly female ones. Could someone help a fella out? The more the merrier. This is something I'd like to study.
