"I just remember having tears and thinking how can I be giving my child so much fat," said Max's mother, Kristine Irvine. "The majority of his meal was bacon and butter, or oil and maybe one strawberry. It was very hard to adjust to that."

Butter as an entree. Bacon as a main course. Flavored Canola oil as a beverage.

[sniff] You had me at "bacon."

Just a year ago, however, Max was enduring more than 100 seizures a day.
Yeah, I'd definitely rather be a fatass than have constant epileptic seizures. And if it helps, that means his body is definitely getting something it needs out of it, at least.

Sounds pretty gross though; eating butter? Just, butter?

I knew a kid on that diet. Seems like it would make you fat, but this toddler was skinny as a rail on it. Kinda turned into a problem when she decided she didn't like bacon anymore. But milkshakes made of with cream instead of milk were a daily drink.

I've always wondered, is that a typo, or is that crap intended to be used in cooking in very small amounts or something? Cholesterol or not it sounds disgustingly inedible anyway.

Too many carbs for the diet. ;)

Hey did you go to Hollywood Upstairs Medical College too?

Considering it's been around since the '20s, and perhaps more importantly - working, I see now reason why it's can't be accepted as routine practice for cases like this.

I'd like to see studies that actually show what happens, but the funds would be hard to get because you can't patent a high fat diet.

I want to know what his diet was like before.

Was he breastfed or bottle fed as a baby?

Did his parents overly restrict his diet in some other way causing a nutritional imbalance?

Of course, all those answers are in his medical records or with his parents, and I'll just have to sit here wondering.

Weird, I was just reading about this.

metametameta: Seems like it would make you fat

Minimal to no carbs, body is forced to burn the fat right away.

It's basically an extreme atkins diet. People think eating lots of fat is bad for you but it's really not. Your body doesn't have time to process it since it's main source of energy is now from the fats and not the carbs. Also the only problems with cholesterol people see with these kinds of diets are the hereditary kind.

/I should know I'm on one.

metametameta: Seems like it would make you fat, but this toddler was skinny as a rail on it.

Dietary fats do not work that way.

Weight loss/gain is based upon one thing and one thing only. Caloric intake. You can eat your BMR caloric need of celery per day or you could eat your BMR caloric need of butter per day and never gain a pound.

Also, high dietary cholesterol has never had a proven link to high blood cholesterol.

Kids generally haven't been tainted by "how much you should eat" rules yet and, left to their own devices, will consume as many calories as they need, no more and no less.

I'd wager these kids on the ketogenic diet are consuming as many calories as their peers, or as they would off it. However, as they are extremely concentrated calories, they probably eat way less volume-wise.

Mmm, bacon.

In addition, kids need lots of fat to grow and feed their little developing brains. Parents who are obsessed with feeding low/no fat diets to their kids are doing them a disservice and harming them more than they are helping them.

No, one can of brains IS in fact a serving! Cholesterol doesn't provide any calories so it's not a big deal. I think Sat Fat and Trans Fats are more important to watch.

Fat is only dangerous to us lazy, fat-ass adults. It is actually very important to a young childs' developing brain and, because children can be so active, it is sometimes difficult for them to get enough.

Slow down... enjoy the meat. Take it all in. And try not to have any seizures before it finishes cooking.

the article was sparce on details, but I imagine the effectiveness of the diet has something to do with myelination. While young brains are developing they need plenty of fat in their diet to produce myelin, a form of fatty insulation the brain uses to keep electrical impulses controlled in the axon of a neuron. Thank you wikipedia.

Especially if the parents of said child are nuts and berries freaks from Seattle. My Daughter's pediatrician even in 1997 said to feed her all the cholesterol foods we could until she was three, and then taper off...
