Because of the risk of disease,
And biting each neck that he sees,
He gives me the creeps.
And also, he sleeps
While hung upside-down by the knees.

I shall ensure that I sleep with my neck exposed tonight, in case one of them is a vampire bat. Then, if it bites me I shall be able to fly and sleep in a coffin, and never have to go to school in the daytime again.

That's why there's vaccinations!

Get your rabies shots before you get bit by a rabid animal and save yourself a whole lot of suffering...

/Yeah, four regular shots before, or a dozen shots after.

As someone who spent a semester in said town, the only thing I have to offer is that one of the locals told me to "keep my woman in line" as we were going into a restaurant. Strange place. No bearing on the article.

If dogs can get rabies shots, can humans? I mean the 1 every 3 years in your arm instead of 20 in your stomach after exposure.. I would do THIS before I would do flu shots. I'm a dog groomer, so I have more chance of exposure to rabies than most...

Yes, humans can get it.

They don't do the 20 in the stomach any more for post-exposure. It's more like 7 to 12 intermuscular and at the site of the bite over about a month. Pre-exposure is for or five shots over a month or two.

It is not recommended for the general population. But if you are working closely with animals, especially wildlife, commonly veterinarian workers, animal control officers, or traveling to countries where it is endemic and if spending time in rural areas then you may need it. The pre-exposure shot reported to be somewhat worse then a tetanus booster.

In general most of the dogs you come in contact with should already be vaccinated. But then again it's owner may be lying about that.

Stupid rabies shots. It's not the end of the world, but man... that's like a whole month of getting shots, and the first round with the immunoglobulin is so much stuff that they'll use their biggest syringes in both cheeks and shoulders.

umm, he didn't pay anything to get bit by a bat, he was seeking compensation from the county for his medical bills, which was a weird special case for rabies

I know the Froelich family and I know this guy. This is absolutely priceless. They were members of my home ward I grew up in back in the days the wards had a split sunday schedule and had RS & Primary in the week. Delaware faithfuls drove the trip down to Columbus regularly until they got their own branch, then ward.

I read that as "Ohio County Pays Man $1,500 for Fat Bit Rate." Couldn't really tell if that was a good deal without more information.

I had to do rabies shots after a bat bite last year. In the end it was about $10,000 worth of crap shot into my muscles, and they decided to skip the final shot. They were no worse than the average shot, except the immunoglobin shots. That is like shooting mass quantities of Karo syrup into the muscle. Ouch. Nothing a large glass of wine, ice packs, and ibuprofen can't fix though.

10k? Who's your doctor, Nick Riviera? It's probably about 2k with no insurance.

I have a bill sitting on my desk for post exposure vaccination. $5898 is the cost in Georgia without insurance if you go to the ER which is the only place that has the post exposure vaccine. Trust me, I called around. That nearly 6000 dollars covers only the first round of shots.

The follow up visits and shots added another 3200. Total cost so far is just over $9000. Had I known the options were 10k in medical debt or death, I might have chosen death.

Of course, if you insurance company pays, they'll pay the hospital about $200. I saw both bills-- mine was about $3k for the vaccinations before they realized I had insurance. How the hell can an insurance company wield enough power to negotiate what appears to be a below-cost price that is more than an order of magnitude cheaper?

$1500??? That's a mite expensive for equal parts malibu rum and cranberry juice.

/ Worked at a bar owned by a pair of brothers from Transylvania
// Yes, they called the bar Dracula's
/// The Bat Bite was one of their signature drinks
//// It was pretty good, too. Not $1500 good, but still...
