The thieves decided they'd rather hit some other place instead. "No, we wouldn't hit it."

Peter Mann, eh? Does he have a bridge?

2003-04-10 12:44:56 AM
How does he expect to lure potential buyers into his store when he hangs that crappy stuff outside?

I guess it's not really to my taste, but I wouldn't call it horrible or obscene or even scary. As for people saying there are children who shouldn't see it, it sounds like the children couldn't care less, once they'd had a giggle and shouted "willy" a few times.

People are strange. All of them.

Is the self-portrait on the left or right of the female?
2003-04-10 12:49:56 AM
Didn't he put them up in response to the vandals? Seems to me that they just don't have any windows to break anymore, so they went elsewhere. It sounds like the only one scared by the paintings is granny who doesn't want to explain them to her grandchildren.

2003-04-10 01:02:19 AM
Keep your nudes indoors, folks.
It's just polite.
2003-04-10 01:06:49 AM
So nobody has added the usual spray paint "mustache" or "pit hair" on these yet?

/wishes he could fly to scotland for art modification
2003-04-10 01:11:40 AM
If that is representative of his work, I'd say the average parent, child, or pensioner could outclass his mediocre artwork easily. Anyone who paints crap like that and can con people into buying it is a genious of crafty and unscrupulous sort.
2003-04-10 01:15:26 AM
If I had kids, I wouldn't mind parading them past the paintings. No matter how young, I would imagine my son would have more than what that guy is showing on the left.
2003-04-10 01:16:50 AM
Oh please. People, it's not like they're engaged in sodomy or butchered carcasses. They're just naked men and women, things you see every day. I for one think the guy is smart and brave, even if his artwork sucks.
2003-04-10 01:19:19 AM
His work is really good acctualy.
To bad non of you guys seem tohave any artistic tastes.
2003-04-10 01:21:32 AM
Tessie Wish I saw naked women everyday..... I want YOUR job.
2003-04-10 01:23:20 AM
I shout boobies in my art class. Noone gets it but me.
2003-04-10 01:27:30 AM
I just don't understand how, in a supposedly sophisticated western world, we'd rather have our kids looking at people being torn into bloody, mangled pieces on film than nudity.

Me, I'd rather they were looking at nudity, so they'd get over their weird trips about it. Maybe they'd grow up not associating nudity with sex, because that's the only time they see it, when they're about to rub one off the rare instances they actually had sex. ;)

No shiat, not even the obligitory Hitler mustache and glasses
2003-04-10 01:32:43 AM
i thought they weren't so uptight about naked people as the U.S. was...
2003-04-10 01:33:41 AM
Well, since you asked for it...

Thank you. I am still amazed these have not been tagged in real life yet.

2003-04-10 01:47:03 AM
This is still better than Star Jones naked.
2003-04-10 01:57:22 AM
where's daffy duck when you need him? anyone else remember the one where he was going around painting mustaches on every picture?
2003-04-10 01:58:22 AM
So...the grandmother doesn't want to explain naked bodies to her grandkids? Oh, right. Being naked is dirty and bad and we should never be like that. Sometimes I forget.

I'd support a shop with an owner like that. He's doing what he can to defy the thieves and he's exposing (no pun intended) people to art. Even if they're too uptight to notice it. It's not like those are pornographic. No one's going to get off from them. Instead of complaining and whining about it, maybe people should start a discussion.

But I've found the older someone is, the less likely they'll talk about something. If it's not their way, it's bad and there's nothing that will change that. (Yeah, major generalizing there.)
2003-04-10 02:00:03 AM
Oh geez I will have night mares for years they scare the $4!7 out of me......retards....oh, Granny those are naked people....tell your grandkids that those are naked poeple...hag. some poeple piss me off, extensively.
2003-04-10 02:02:05 AM
Yeah Snowbunnny, because people disagree with you that must mean they lack artistic taste.

I don't care about the nudity but that's not something I'd want to look outside my window and see. It's an eye sore.
2003-04-10 02:06:06 AM
I like the paintings.
2003-04-10 02:09:49 AM
I am betting that granny doesn't like them because she wants to be a great grandmother some day and having a kid see those pictures could scare them from wanting to see anything naked ever.
2003-04-10 02:12:24 AM
hehe Cola

They accomplish the same thing here by playing country music
on the loudspeakers outside. Yee haw. Discourages loitering.
2003-04-10 02:17:40 AM
You don't have to have opinions about everything, especially things you don't know anything about.
2003-04-10 02:18:03 AM

The only painting I remember with Daffy involved this.

Well, yes, the pictures are freakish, but then again so are a lot of paintings. Paintings are supposed to express a feeling; these are more in tune to weakness. His placement of the pictures is perhaps not one of the best, and it isn't exactly a good marketing technique. But hey, you got to give a guy credit... I mean, he's showing his nude self to all on the street... almost as bad as the guy that would put a nude picture of himself on women's cars.

"A lot of people also tell me they don't like my artwork, but I don't mind. As long as it is provoking emotion then it's fine. What would bother me is if people were indifferent."

This is my motto to :)

I don't think this is Edinburgh - I think it's London. This might be a stretch, but I don't think people in Edinburgh would be quite as vocal or shocked about it. There are two big campuses in that part of Scotland, ECA (Edinburgh college of art, my alma) and Glasgow (which is filled with Glaswegians who are unable to compete with reekies;) ) as well as the festivals, so there is a lot of exposure up there to art/nudity/bizzareness and things of questionable taste...

I miss Scotland... :(
2003-04-10 02:26:48 AM
Huh... a bit dull. Then again, I've been through the art school shredder already. :)
2003-04-10 02:33:02 AM
Art, but not as stimulating as a crucifix in a jar of piss.
2003-04-10 02:43:55 AM
But do they run around ringing doorbells?
2003-04-10 02:54:22 AM
"A lot of people also tell me they don't like my artwork, but I don't mind. As long as it is provoking emotion then it's fine. What would bother me is if people were indifferent."

Hey buddy, you're right. Nothing says "thought provoking" like making people redefine their definition of shiatty.
2003-04-10 03:06:38 AM
I swear I've seen that pic in a GIS the other day

"A naked man apparently knocked on the rear slider door of a residence in the 1200 block of Webster Street around 9 p.m., said police.

However, when the porch light went on the man ran, jumped over the back fence and fled the location, police said."

A particularly stunning work of performance art! This challenge to contemporary moral associations, this inquiry into the definition of freedom (and its place in an ever more materialistic world), is particularly bold in that it incorporates viewer participation. He seeks to shred the illusion (and inherent boundaries) of the "self", and invites the audience to follow him into his heady cathedral of unlimited vistas.

Someone give this man money. Fistfuls of it, and fast!
2003-04-10 03:37:06 AM
OOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Watch out for Grandma Helen!
2003-04-10 03:59:06 AM
If he wants to elicite a response, does a swift kick in the nards count?
2003-04-10 04:02:37 AM
Someone give this man money. Fistfuls of it, and fast!

Only if he uses the money to buy some pants.

The words "freakish and nude" will always get me to read the article and comments.

Just thought I'd share.
