Subby, if you got a D in algebra, then perhaps you're not the person who should be trying to balance the budget at all.

Though it's not mentioned in TFA, I'm going to guess that MD isn't paying them to develop this. It sounds much more like a watchdog group trying to bring attention to an inept and corrupt state government.

Feel free to prove me wrong, though.

From their website:

The Institute is a project of the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations, or "Maryland Nonprofits." The Institute is part of the State Fiscal Analysis Initiative and the Economic Analysis and Research Network, both of which are national networks of policy research organizations.

I case you did not know.... the state dose not quilify for "Non Profit" status.

It just says they are pissed off at you. Basically it has a checklist of various proposals that I guess are up before the legislature and you just put a check on whether you want to do that. It doesn't seem to take long term consequences into consideration, just straight up "cutting $12billion will save $12billion" leaving out any trickle down, spill over, or effects on other policies.

State governments especially. Now that more and more news coverage is national/global, coverage of local and state news is seen as "boring". Thus ripe for corruption since no one is watching.

Probably a troll as the name of the party doesn't matter. Maryland is pretty much dominated by one party's machine. True of any state where one organized party controls the majority of government offices.

Yeah, its pretty much the pinnacle of an interactive spreadsheet with a slick GUI. Very fiddly, doesn't react well to the grandiose, sweeping reforms of most god-game megalomania. IIRC it was literally clicking up/down, yes/no, and watching little colored bars fill up or drain. Really speaks to the guys abilities to make that fun and engaging.

for anyone who cares, I just checked out the game:

1. the numbers are real
2. the options are real (many of them have already been taken or considered by the governor/legislature)
3. it DOES take into account some spillover effects
4. MD is in tons better shape than almost any other state out there(about 3 or 4 better than it), so if you think the MD budget is FUBAR, look to your own state.

I've tinkered with it a bit, and even slashing spending everywhere, you still have to raise taxes to balance the budget.

They have very limited options for cutting spending. You can only pick things from the menu they offer.

This game i sproduced under the auspices of http://www.marylandpolicy.org/ --- "Established in 1998, the Institute provides independent, nonpartisan research and analysis of state budget and tax policy priorities. Our particular focus is how policy decisions affect low- and moderate-income families, vulnerable populations, and the important community programs that serve them."

So, yeah, maybe they're non-partisan, but certainly non un-biased. Looking around the site a bit, it's obvious that they're in favor tax increases as opposed to cuts in services. If they have an agenda, which it seems they do, it would be simple enough to rig this game so that you can't "win" without massive tax increases.

And the players still do a better job then the Annapolis politicians!!

On another note Baltimore's Mayor is still getting kicked out of office in February & Governor Martin O'Malley is still a crook.

And people wonder why I left!!
