(Contact Music) Interesting Paul McCartney wanted to be bassist for Them Crooked Vultures, but unfortunately the band didn't need cheesy ballads and figured they already sounded dated enough   (contactmusic.com) divider line 36

First of all, Paul McCartney, while one of the sappiest song writers in the history of the planet, is also one of the most underrated bass players in rock history. Listen to "Baby You're a Rich Man," "Paperback Writer" or "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except For Me And My Monkey" (just to name a few).

Second of all, John Paul Jones could quite possibly be the MOST underrated musician in all of rock history.

Thirdly Them Crooked Vultures just didn't blow my mind like I thought it would.

i feel like it's the kind of group that shouldn't even have a studio album and should exist solely to blow concert audiences off of their feet.

I would call it a tie between JPJ and John Entwistle. Both incredibly versatile multi-talented individuals who did more for their respective bands than the average listener realizes.

I like to think of it as a Queens of the Stone Age album with above average musicians.

j/k

Both Jonesy and Macca are multi-instrumentalists. I'm sure there'd be room enough in the group for both.

yes, jpj did a lot for zep...and on a couple of vultures tracks i hear the zep...it's really good in that context...great addition to the other 2 seriously talented guys.

entwistle was some kind of robot, i swear! like duck dunn he barely moved, yet the fingers were doing some incredible things

I couldn't agree more about Macca or JPJ.

I think a few of the TCV tracks are really great, but I get kinda bored by the end of the record. If they make another record, I'd suggest making it shorter.

If I ever meet him in person, I *will* smack him in the head for that godawful Christmas song that he unleashed upon the world.

Say say say what you will, but he can write some catchy tunes.

WTF are you talking about? That song's got the best synth sound in the entirety of modern popular music. If you wanna hear a bad farkin christmas song, listen to "Christmas All Over Again" by Tom Petty. *shudder*

Jones and Macca should combine forces and record the most amazing album ever conceived!

JPJ must've taken that gig out of charity, no way in hell is Dave Grohl or anybody in Queens of the Stone Age his equal.

While that songs gets annoying quick, it does have an awesome synth part.

Paul didn't pass the audition!

Somewhere, John Lennon is laughing.

You guys are hanging out/jamming with the wrong crowd.

Jones and McCartney are the MOST beloved and respected bassists where I come from. They are the most liked bass players by non-bass players.

Ask a dumb bassist "who is the BEST or your FAVORITE bassist?"
and they almost always respond with "Wooten" "Claypool" "Flea"
or any one of the grossly overrated spastic slap-crackle-pop bass guys.

Ask a rock drummer, guitarist or especially a songwriter the same question and the answer is almost always Jones and McCartney.

2010-01-19 08:11:23 AM
I don't think you can just name the "best" bass player. When I think of technical ability, of course Wooten and Geddy are going to come to mind.

When i think of melodic originality, I absolutely think of John and Macca. Paul's basslines on all of Abbey Road are perfectly tastefully and under-the-radar busy. The guy knows how to play.

And I've always thought Chris Squire has both. Sick tone, melodic focus and incredible chops.

Now you may not like the band, but if you want to hear a bass player who's been underrated surprising you with his chops, listen to Chickenfoot. I was just impressed what Michael Anthony could do without EVH telling him to play straight 8th notes.

/not saying Anthony's a great bass player, just shines on Chickenfoot
//I'm a keyboard player, not a bassist
///love TCV, John was the perfect choice

There you go again.

The TCV album is all over the place -- some incredible tracks and some very forgettable tracks. Still, it's nice to hear some solid rock again.

I've always liked Paul's bass lines in "Something". They really move the song to some interesting melodic places.

that's kind of a stretch, to say the least.

I stopped in just to say basically what GurneyHalleck said.

I thought the music on the Them Crooked Vultures CD was good, but some tracks fell a little short of my expectations. The sound quality was horribly compressed, though. That kinda ruined it for me.

Big John's Breakfast Log: I've always liked Paul's bass lines in "Something". They really move the song to some interesting melodic places.

just a great song all around, as are many of the beatles tunes. and one thing great about the beatles...the depth of their mixes and compositions...if you put a good recording of them thru even cheap headphones and just close your eyes and listen there is a lot of stuff going on even on the simpler songs. i'm not saying they're the only 60's band doing that, but considering the kind of band they were (especially in their first couple of years) it's really one of the big reasons they're set apart from many of their peers

Except that sadly their concert was about 75 minutes of barely stretching the material on their album. Easily one of the most disappointing concerts I've been to, despite Dave mashing like a crazy man.

In other news, did anyone see Ringo on the Daily Show? Farking terrible. Stick to drums, man. His backup embarrassed him by actually singing better than most people at a karaoke bar.

Would not go as far as to say Entwhistle was underrated -- while he was a core of the rhythm section, much like Jonesy, he always had a fair share of the limelights during either the albums (My Wife is whimsical and well arranged with the horns) or on stage (Summertime Blues cover, solo on My Generation; main rhythm on some songs like A Quick One).

Jonesy on the other hand, kept his distance from the main lights (separate tour bus, no vocals) and from what i read, while he enjoyed touring, he always felt like a technician and sound engineer than a performer -- which is what makes the main difference between underrated and overrated, the show...

All being said, it's great to see Jonesy having FUN and it's sad the Ox passed away.

Agreed.

Chalk up 'The Real Me' and 'Eminence Front' for some serious Ox work

Maybe McCartney could have made them sound different than most everything else Josh Homme is a part of.

Kyuss, QOTSA, TCV...pretty much all the same. Disappointing.

/To be fair,Eagles of Death Metal are a bit different.
