At least in the United States, if you ARE an American, you are treated equally.

At the national level. Things may have changed, but I remember my parents having to constantly fight local school boards for equal access to programs.

If I were in Sophie Giraud's position, I'd probably take the UK passport and move over there. No sense living in a country that doesn't respect you, IMHO.

Well, thank god France isn't in the middle of cultural unrest caused by its refusal to integrate legal immigrants from its former colonial empire into its current society. Otherwise this might really look bad.

What's happening to the French is going to happen in the US when RealID goes into full swing.

Near future at any DMV
Customer: "I need to renew my license."
DMV: "OK. I need the expiring license, your birth certificate, Social Security card and proof of residency."
Customer: "What?! I've had a license for years."
DMV: "RealID requires your birth certificate, Social Security card and proof of residency. I can't renew your license until you bring these."
Customer: "#@(@@)!"

Later that week
Customer: "OK, I'm here to renew my license...again. Here is my birth certificate, Social Security card and a copy of my electric bill."
DMV: "OK, as soon as we can verify the authenticity of these documents, we can issue your license. It'll be about 2-4 weeks."
Customer: "What am I supposed to drive with?"
DMV: "Here is a temporary license. It is not valid for ID purposes, so you cannot use it to fly or enter federal buildings."
Customer: "But I have a business trip next week!"
DMV: *Shrugs*

To be honest, Europe has always been way more nationalistic and racist than the US.

It's just such feeling are now hidden under a veneer of multi-culturalism.

I suspect this move is aimed at a lot of North Africans.

More nationalist, maybe in a narrowly defined sense (maybe tribalist would be a better word).Americans are certainly more patriotic than most Europeans, it's generally just easier to included as a member of the nation.

but racist? Spare me. Sure they didn't like other "races", but for most it was at best a remote issue (for the most part never met one). Unlike in America where race is an obsession and racism (at least when it was more open) was often an immediate, derisive, obsession.

I've flown with just a copy of my birth certificate. I wasn't even frisked, the only questioning I got was, "How old are you?" and I responded with the age corresponding to the birthdate on the certificate.
Of course, I'm white.

Pretty much how it went when I got my TX DL. Had to show green card, SS card, insurance and TX registration for my car (which also served as proof of residency), and swear that I've never had a US or Canadian license before.

I stand by my original statement.

I, and the majority of Americans, will treat no one differently because of their race, sex, religion, handicap, or sexual preference.

If some ignorant racist beats someone up, then the rest of America tend to come down on them pretty harshly. Look what we did to Don Imus for just saying "Nappy Headed".

I'm a white, born-and-raised Smalltown Midwestern boy, in the middle of the Bible belt, who didn't see a black person until I was 18. And I would never look down on my fellow man.

Times changed. Its taken a long time, and it is going to take even longer for more progress. But have no doubt, America has changed.

Part of the reason it's easier to be part of the nation in America is because we don't define American through blood or race, We're a people united by ideals. An American whose ancestors came over on the Mayflower is just as American as the guy from Malaysia who swore the oath last week. Look at Germany and how they treat the Turkish minority in terms of citizenship, and what it means to be German.

And our racism is much more in the forefront because we are not nearly as homogeneous as most European countries. We've had centuries of many races living side by side, often with clear distinctions of "power." Many European nations are more than 90% white, so it's much easier to say that there isn't much racism as there isn't much interaction with other races.

This is happening right now in Florida as of Jan. 1st, exactly like in the article.

Somehow, all of the prior acceptance of my driver's license as my valid Identification, based on the previous production of almost the exact same legal documentation several decades ago, which has never gone unquestioned before now, is somehow no longer valid or trustworthy, despite having been previously validated by this exact same agency and by people who were probably of a higher IQ and educational level to boot.

Now I have to dredge up legal copies of my birth certificate (since the originals are long since deteriorated with time, and could be "fake" by modern standards-- God help you if there was ever a fire or flood in your home town's records office!) and God only knows what else by the time my current license actually expires, so that I can have the "privilege" of being forced to go to only one location downtown, stand in line for f*cking ALL DAY, all just to do something I already did?

It's almost as if we're being slowly acclimated to some new kind of authoritarian regime, where your every move is monitored, questioned, and controlled.

/One degree Fahrenheit an hour people, that's all it takes to "boil" you.

Seems that's not going to happen too quickly. 25 states have passed laws or resolutions saying they will not participate in the program.
