Australia has banned swords, banned chunks of the internet, now it's R-rated movies - what's next?

And why do Aussies put up with this shiat?

2010-01-17 03:47:09 PM
Foyer stands and posters, cinema ads and billboards for R-rated films are unaffected.

So what's the point?

reading the article is too hard, so i'll just take your word for it subby. i'm going to go tell everyone i know that australia has, in fact, banned R-rated movies. i sure hope your headline isn't misleading at all or boy will i look stupid.

2010-01-17 03:49:04 PM
Except that they aren't banned, they just have to be in plain packaging.

From TFA:

Adults aged over 18 seeking to buy or borrow a copy of Mad Max, the acclaimed desert war drama Three Kings, starring George Clooney, the Brad Pitt classic Fight Club or the 2009 Blu Ray release of Sasha Baron Cohen's fashion parody Bruno will now find them in plain packaging displaying nothing more than the film's title.

Because we're a bunch of lazy ignorant idiots who can't work up the energy to get excited about anything other than the occasional game of footy.

It's going to be interesting to see how this pans out - the law has been bought in so discreetly that no one knows anything about it. I can't imagine the good people of south australia, the serial killer capital of australia, taking too kindly to this one. Optimistically it may even open up the debate on classification to more people than just gamers and Mrs. Lovejoys.

Another thing to add to my optimism. Even South Australians will be able to figure out the stupidity of this one.

Wow Australian politicians are desperately trying to catch up and surpass the U.K. in stupid useless laws.

2010-01-17 04:21:43 PM
I've been reading about how they reconstructed a lot of the old Doctor Who series, and most of the existing video from the real old ones came from what was censored in Australia. Really? The country that gave us Mad Max censored Doctor Who?

Flight Club wasn't all that racy. Except when the stewardesses would initiate passengers into the "Mile High" Club.

The remake wasn't as good as the original, either.

So what's the difference between the normal packaging and the new, plain brown wrapper ones? Just how do they help anything?

Sometimes films that are heavy into sex and violence use graphic imagery on the cover to promote those aspects of it.

Oh wow, evidently Michael Atkinson is approaching Jack Thompson levels of self-righteousness and ignorance.

Adelaide (the capital of SA) is called "The City of Churches".

That's pretty much de rigeur for shiatty laws these days. According to the book The Shock Doctrine, many of the world's shiatty current economic policies (eg "companies can sue governments over laws that reduce their profits") have been snuck in while the public was distracted by other things such as "wow the previous shiatty law we didn't want just cost us our jobs!"

Subby, 5/10 for the headline trolling

But the real question is: will this make them less likely to lock their kids in the basement and fark them silly for 30 years?

The entertainment industries need to just stop distribution to Australia for 6 months. That'll piss off the genpop, and hopefully force some new legislation or policies. Either these companies are having to pay to customize their video games and movies to fit Australia's asinine and repressive policies, or they can lose Australia business for a few months to see if it changes anything.

Seriously, it's like they're trying to make that PG-rated 300 spoof a reality.

He is, the Austria/Australia thing is a recurring joke.

Michael Atkinson is one of the few politicians that I honestly believe should have a riot forcibly take him out of office.

WTF? They censored Doctor Who? In the states Doctor Who, especially old Doctor Who is either rated G or PG.

Oh, Australia has little pissy-pants moral "majority" farkTARDS, too? Just deal with them the same way we do in the USA: Break into their computers and find the kinderPr0n. They will then leave the public eye in order to "spend more time with their family."

Isn't Australia a representative democracy? I thought so.

I ask because, I know a handful of aussies and they are the most foul mouthed drunk bastards you will ever meet. Maybe thats why they don't make it to the polls to fix this stuff

With most laws, you can tell what industry is behind it -- someone stands to make money when that law gets passed.

I cannot for the life of me figure out what the economic incentive of this law is TO ANYBODY. Who is supporting this law? What is their incentive for supporting it? What is the warrant and backing for their argument that it ought to become law?

The US has some pretty farked up rules regarding content themselves. The first boobies I ever saw were when I was three in "Airplane!", rated PG.

The last boobies I ever saw in a PG-13 movie were in Titanic, 13 years ago. Meanwhile, last year's "Taken" was more violent than most Schwarzenegger movies from the 1980s. And no more "F" words. Strange priorities.

2010-01-17 07:21:12 PM
I'm very disappointed in Australia, which with the exception of censorship is far more progressive than us Yanks. (Though not by much...see Janet Jackson v. Super Bowl).
