Only at Christmas.

I've only toyed with any of the new consoles. The Wii is fun. The others are pretty neat, but I haven't been a big FPS player since, like, DOOM, and the only games I got to try out were those kinds of games. But I imagine that with the right game, they're all very fun.

I miss PC space combat "simulators" like Wing Commander, X-Wing Alliance, and FreeSpace. I used to love those and RPGs. 'Cause I'm a dork.

/Actually still has XWA and FreeSpace 2. And Tie Fighter. And X-Wing. And Privateer (ugh).

I'm sure that if we got enough Farkers together, we could re-ignite the Freespace 2 multiplayer crowd.

As much of a Nintendo fanboy I am I approve all this Freespace love and don't care if the thread gets completely derailed.

is there anywhere to get the game now? specially freespace 2, it was such an amazing game.

Glad there are still a few people left that have actual taste. Screw the MMOs :). I did hear a rumor that LucasArts may re-release some of the X-wing titles.

As for the article I have to admit I picked up SMB:Wii and it is very fun. It combines some of the best elements of SMB, SMB 3 and SMB World along with a lot of new ideas of its own.

The best part is the multi-player at the same time.

Both me and my room mate own a Wii. The only game we ever play on it is Smash Bros Brawl. And that we play with a user made hack.

PS3 and 360 get a lot more use.

2010-01-14 11:50:49 PM
Can we pretty please have the same discussion we normally have in a console thread. I know some people want to come in here and talk about cool stuff and all, but the internet is not the place for that.

If you wish, I can begin.

Wii - junk shovel ware!
PS3 - Overpriced electronics, it's the pink shirt with a popped collar of gaming
360 - Every one of these gets an RROD, gives your cancer, and has sex with your mother when you aren't looking

And after a while, the PC crowd will chime in - PC's are superior because they better fit my playstyle, and you're a noob douche, L2P!

2010-01-14 11:52:16 PM
I just don't get the fascination with the Wii, even with 300 cra...er...backed up games on an HD, I never play the damn thing.

Now back to Prototype on my PS3.

2010-01-14 11:52:36 PM
This isn't at all related to the article, but a couple of video games.

Over Christmas I got my 360 fixed and bought MW2. It was fun for...a couple hours? I quickly realized that the less you move, the more you camp, the more successful you'll be in the game. The maps, and kill streak rewards just make the game a camp fest. COD4 is still superior IMO.

I don't play MW2 that often. Like a round here or there when my bro has it on. I have been playing TF2 for a few weeks and am loving the hell out of it. It is the best fun you can have online, and no monthly payments (playing on steam).

/cool story bro

INeedAName: PS3 - Overpriced electronics, it's the pink shirt with a popped collar of gaming

Overpriced? It's 300 dollars with a 120gig hard drive and built in wifi. Now, before the slim I would have agreed with you, but as is it's a better deal than the 360 and a far superior console to the Wii. It's not as good a gaming platform as the PC, but it's pretty damn good.

2010-01-14 11:55:24 PM
Might be good if it ever comes out:

http://us.jumpgateevolution.com/

Also might be(extremely)good, but is being privately developed and is even less likely to come out any time soon:

Yes they are MMO's but single player action space simulation is pretty much a dead genre.

Notice that all the games that sell on the Wii are made by Nintendo. I wonder why other companies even try at this point anymore. Just pump out the cheap and crappy waggle games. If it doesn't have Mario in it or the Wii name in front of it, you're not going to make your money back.

You know GameTap and other services have retro-games that you can run under modern Windows versions. And pretty cheap, too.

Plus, you can get an old-style two-button joystick (with a new-style USB connector) for $20. You remember the ones. They didn't auto-center themselves. You had a big red thumb button and a trigger for your index finger.

Oh holy hot dicks from hell. I loved playing Tie Fighter with my left hand on a joystick and my right hand on a mouse, using the keyboard as necessary. Felt like cockpit controls. I can only imagine with modern graphics.... oh hell ya.

I'm guilty of adding to Nintendo's overstuffed swimming pools of moolah. Had to replace the wii after dropping it onto the sidewalk on Christmas eve, just as Santa was preparing to finally deliver some RockBand.

Rayman's rabbids get a lot of playtime in our house, as well as the Outdoor Adventures (kayaking is harder than it looks!). For "family-friendly" titles, you can't beat Nintendo.

/also bought COD2:MW, but for the pc. Awesome stuff.

Too bad there has not been a decent "blow shiat up" kind of space sim in many years.

If someone took the time to make a good one with a real story and sense of scale with modern tech it would be epic.

I have a Wii and a PS3. I even have the new Super Mario Bros. Wii some in this thread see fit to rag on. I enjoy it in that is is basically just an updated version of the Mario games I enjoyed as a kid. For the most part I only have the Wii for when my mom comes over or kids are in my house. I play it occasionally.

I love my PS3. I absolutely adore games like Uncharted, GTA IV, Bioshock, Assassins Creed, Dragon Age: Origins and InFamous. Tomorrow I'm probably going to buy The Saboteur and maybe Bayonetta. Games like these can't be ever spec'd to Wii. Wii is for casual and younger gamers. The PS3 (and the 360 I guess) are for the more 'mature' gamers who like games other than Pikmin, Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon (for clarification, I've played games from all three series I just mentioned and enjoyed them all I merely use them as a demonstration of the differences between current-generation systems).

I've had my Wii since 2007, and my 360 since October. I've played my 360 (Fallout 3, Dragon Age, Bioshock, Mass Effect, etc etc) more so far than my Wii (Uh...Mario Kart is fun, so is SSB:B, but SSB:B's online multiplayer is awful).

Wii is fun for parties and such, XBox and PS3 are good for single player gaming (or online).

Nintendo releases some great first party games...but their lack of 3rd party support is what is driving me off.

I know, a majority of XBox titles are on the PC. But I don't really have a gaming PC, so I wouldn't be able to play games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect without slowdown and terrible graphics.

2010-01-15 01:03:12 AM
My only problem is I had a whole different set of ideas for what I thought the wiimote was going to be used for.
I imagined swinging swords or throwing bombs, not bowling or jogging in place.

I've found that the best games I've played recently have been the cheap $10-20 independent ones.
