i've been telling people in trailer parks in oklahoma about tornadoes for years. whatever happens to them is their own fault.

They had a whole year to move the city to a different location. They should have listened.

Let nature take it's course. Help them dig out, then stop giving them food.

Without a doubt, feeding people in a country that can't support it's population simply makes it harder for them to feed themselves. Stop feeding them and let the population get back to normal.

I like this idea..especially if they show no signs of ever turning it around and instead, continue to be an economic black hole.

It actually isn't that bad of a point. Haiti has no future. It can't. The country can't grow food, aside from very few areas that have been carefully protected to keep their topsoil. You cannot fix Haiti. It isn't going to magically become self-sustaining. So what is the point in helping them?

I was thinking more of spiking their water with birth control...rather than letting already-alive people suffer in squalor and ruin.

I guess that makes me a softie

I'm 100% serious. The only thing feeding the starving masses does is help prop up failed (and probably corrupt) governments. When I say 'failed' I mean that they can not provide the services their population needs.

Show me one time that feeding a country long term has helped them become self-sustaining and I'll change my mind.

Building codes are for big government loving liberal elitists.

NOW they can move the city!

It is not like we owe them any debt or anything. I mean I'd understand if many of these people's ancestors were slaves abducted and exploited by Western civilization and then just discarded on this island. They made their bed hard, they can sleep on it. It they all starve to death, it will just teach people not to let themselves become slaves to begin with. amiright?

Makes me think about the Philippines and Thailand having roughly the same population and food supply/import-export back in 1978. The Catholic church tells both "no birth control!" The Philippines suck up to the church. Thailand tells them to fark off.

Now Thailand's population is still sustainable. The PI is struggling with an extra 2 million or so people and can't keep up. The church feeds SOME of those extra 2 million people, but the country is overwhelmed.

Geez. We occupied the country for 20 years, then left them with a brutal dictator.

Why should we hold any responsibility? We are AMERICA! We apologize for NOTHING!

Why does that distinction matter? Charity is charity. What if the food came from another US State or from Canada or Mexico. The point is that the people got it for free and they bounced back.

pudding7: What should they have done, exactly?

Retrofit their buildings and made the public aware of the risk. People who live in countries like Haiti, that can't afford to enforce any kind of building codes, are very susceptible to disasters because those two things I listed cost money and require effort from their government.

I'm just going to say that maybe if they weren't clear-cutting their forests for charcoal fuel they wouldn't have quite this problem.

A 7.0 magnitude at only 5 km depth would have been a disaster in any city in the world. Obviously, extra horrific and tremendous loss of life because of their sad buildings but nothing would have prevented this from being a major catastrophie.

There are no countries in the world that import food.

Right?

Haiti's problem isn't just food production... it's that it doesn't produce anything else.

We all live on the earth. Earthquakes happen. There's nothing you can do to prevent them. Even if you can predict them, what are you going to do? Evacuate a whole country or a whole metropolitan area? I live in Southern California, but I don't worry about quakes because there is nothing I can do about it.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A Purdue professor said he warned Haitian officials of the fault under Port-au-Prince, but little was done as a result of his warning.

I'm blaming the journalist here. The prof didn't explicitly say that. Sloppy thinking and/or writing.

Or maybe I don't want to admit that a prof from my undergrad is an idiot.
