But I've been told over and over that my car is causing an irreversable green house effect and I've personally already destroyed much of the ozone layer.

Next thing you know, some of this "research" will say that in fact I am not killing 25,000 people every year with my second hand smoke.

What is this world coming too?

Dumbth:

Dr Brown said: "The conclusion that 20th century warming is not unusual relies on the assertion that the Medieval Warm Period was a global phenomenon. This is not the conclusion of IPCC."

No? So it was only warm, like, in Europe? OK, Europe and Asia. And Africa too. But hey, we don't KNOW about the Americas, so nanny nanny boo boo, we're discounting your research.

He added that there were also doubts about the reliability of temperature proxies such as tree rings: "They are not able to capture the recent warming of the last 50 years," he said.

Um...so tree rings WERE able to indicate the Medieval Warm Period and the Mini Ice Age of the past, but because they can't capture the recent warming, they're not useful? Maybe I'm missing something here? Could a reasonably non-biased biologist/climatologist chime in here?

2003-04-08 01:40:32 PM
Yeah, but it was a dry heat.

2003-04-08 02:01:44 PM
This is silly.

The difference is now we have man made global warming, whereas then we had natural warming. There was no industrial pollution, just some iron smelters.

There's a big difference between man-made temperature increases and natural temperature increases.

We don't know if the temps nowadays would be as hot as the middle ages, but we know they didn't have man-made pollution and we do. So it makes sense to concentrate on the man-made pollution.

Not look for excuses why it doesn't matter.

I believe it was because of increased burnination of the countryside, peasants, and thatched-roof cottages in the Middle Ages.

2003-04-08 02:20:42 PM
The difference, Generation_D, is whether or not people should be crying to the heavans, tearing out their eyes because of the agony and irreplaceable life that's being destroyed even now...or if people can live their lives and make steady, true steps to reduce pollution, without the hysterics.

2003-04-08 02:56:05 PM
Take that hippies!

2003-04-08 03:42:25 PM
Thank you Stevarooni. I'm still waiting for someone to go after truth.org for all the lies they are spewing.

It's one thing to recognize a problem and speak out about it. When you start using the deceptive statisics and lies to further your cause, you're doing more harm than good.

2003-04-08 04:38:03 PM
It is now time for the global warming kooks to STFU!

2003-04-08 04:43:36 PM
Nah, not STFU, GEAH, but to take a deep breath, realize that 97.3% of the species of the Earth have not been eradicated because someone is driving an H2, and work on legitimate, economically sound methods of making things better, and encouraging rather than scourging people into doing them.

2003-04-08 04:49:45 PM
Global warming is the biggest load of crap people willingly try to shovel into their own mouths.

2003-04-08 05:12:46 PM
it's because of that ring that controls all or something....

2003-04-08 05:13:11 PM
Yep...back in those days we called baked potatoes just plain potatoes, cause they came that way. Good times....goood goood times....yep

2003-04-08 05:13:22 PM
I bet it's because the core of our Earth is slowly stopping its rotation and we need the nerdy kid from Road trip to hack the planet.

2003-04-08 05:15:39 PM
I think the biggest problem here is that this is pretty much as yet un-peer reviewed... 'till then why dont you all STFU

2003-04-08 05:16:22 PM
Global warming was not a concern before the introduction of Taco Bell. Coincidence? I think not.

2003-04-08 05:16:47 PM
Or so the Illuminati would have you believe.

2003-04-08 05:17:04 PM
Now, i know what you are going to say... 240 sceintists can't be wrong... BUT, let me remind you of that little thing we call evolut..... alright i shall STFU

2003-04-08 05:17:20 PM
It's not the heat, it's the HUMIDITY!

2003-04-08 05:17:39 PM
Whoa.

I just heard this mentioned a few minutes ago on the radio.

2003-04-08 05:18:14 PM
We're killing off a lot more animals from overhunting/habitat destruction than global warming. But you don't hear a whole bunch of biatching about that.

I think it is because all these environmental freaks are so darn ugly they need any excuse they can get to keep their cloths on without being out of place. Note, I'm not complaining. Girls with hairy armpits and legs give me the jeevies!

2003-04-08 05:20:00 PM
hehe blame taco bell, i dont think its a coincidence

It's April 8, yesterday we had 4 inches of snow, and today i had to chisel a 1/4" thick coating of ice off my car in order to go to work.

NO shiat IT WAS WARMER IN THE MIDDLE AGES!

2003-04-08 05:20:44 PM
"During the Medieval Warm Period, the world was warmer even than today, and history shows that it was a wonderful period of plenty for everyone."

Yes, yes a wonderful time with plenty of plague and religious wars and new, wonderful torture techniques and execution methods for all!

Oh.. the good old days.

Nevertheless, excuse me for a moment while I lop the catalytic converter off my truck please....

2003-04-08 05:22:29 PM
your momma's so fat she takes two trips to haul ass.. i like it cold.. i can snowboard then

"New research shows that earth was warmer in the Middle Ages"
But current research show that at this very moment Bagdah has never been hotter .... BOOYAH !

2003-04-08 05:23:46 PM
Research well-funded by the petrolium industry, by the way.

In other news, te earth was also hotter when it was forming and continents were being carved out of molten rock. Still doesn't change the fact that pumping billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere isn't going to do us a great deal of good in the enar future.

2003-04-08 05:24:42 PM
And there's the thing with the sun being hotter, too. Of course, maybe someone mentioned that already.

/too lazy to read the comments in detail.

So ... STFU

2003-04-08 05:25:04 PM
Blame it on the BURNINATION!!!

2003-04-08 05:25:21 PM
Warming schwarming.

I bet there wasn't any ozone in the atmosphere during the Middle Ages either.

2003-04-08 05:25:24 PM
This isn't new news. The simple fact is that in warmer times in the past, humans as a species have prospered, and in the many colder periods human populations have died back; warmer times have been wetter, with higher sea levels, and colder times dry, with lower sea levels. The accepted historical origin of the "kicked out of the garden of Eden" ur-legends, is the cooling/drying of Mesopotania.

The most common condition has been colder ice-age and near ice age climate.

2003-04-08 05:26:49 PM
It just felt hotter because they were all wearing suits of armor.

2003-04-08 05:27:11 PM
During the Medieval Warm Period, the world was warmer even than today, and history shows that it was a wonderful period of plenty for everyone.

Yeah, life was just like it looks at the Renaissance festivals. My impression was always that nobody much enjoyed living through the Middle Ages, and that they were just like Monty Python bits tell us they were. I wonder who that quote was talking about? Charlemange?

2003-04-08 05:27:29 PM
SwiftFox of course, the middle ages were also called the dark ages for the europ3nz

2003-04-08 05:27:56 PM
I bet it's because the core of our Earth is slowly stopping its rotation and we need the nerdy kid from Road trip to hack the planet.

hey all he was doing was spreading misinformation about the problem

anyway I was to know how they can conclusively say what the tempatures were back then.

The sun did shine on Camelot.

2003-04-08 05:30:31 PM
from article: The study, about to be published in the journal Energy and Environment

It has been peer reviewed.

2003-04-08 05:30:34 PM
Ah, the balmy middle ages, when Greenland was green and Inuit butchered whale carcasses in grassy valleys (National Geographic article from sometime in the 80s).

2003-04-08 05:30:55 PM
Before you trumpet a study as "proof" of a scientific fact (especially a statistical or historical one), take a look at who funded it.

2003-04-08 05:31:53 PM
I think the earth was warmer last year - well, at least Michigan was...

2003-04-08 05:31:56 PM
This isn't new, either. My father has been saying this for years.

2003-04-08 05:32:12 PM

I still stand by my original theory: Farting cows. And New Zealand.

Everybody loves New Zealand. Aren't they just the neatest country with their breathtaking topography? Aren't they just a wonderful little set of islands that never pisses off anyone in the global community?
New Zealand is cool with everyone.

Hey Uzbekistan, who doesn't piss you off?
New Zealand!

Howdy Botswana! What are you doing this weekend?
Ohh, we're having a fondue party.
Can I come?
Nahh, it's just us, Andorra, and New Zealand.

What's the biggest problem people have with New Zealand? The sheep. And even that's a cute problem. Heh, they have a lot of sheep over there. They probably have teh sh33p s3x! roflmfao lolz :-D

Well, I'm on to you, you sneaky little kiwi crapsacks. I'm on to you and your global warming scheme. The temperature rises; South Africa, Chile, and Argentina become flooded, farther away from Antarctica. But New Zealand is fine with their seaside cliffs and awe inpiring mountains. And who gets to claim this once-frigid/now-tropical paradise infested with sweaty penguins? NEW ZEALAND!!!! You won't get away with this!!!

We've known for sometime that the Vikings once found Greenland to be a nice place to settle down and plant crops, so obviously it was warmer back around AD 900 or so.

As for the "this current warming is bad, because it's man-made, not natural," argument. That's the dumbest thing I've heard in a while. Is 99.9F degrees hotter if it comes from a propane flame instead of sunlight?

Besides, man is part of nature, so anything done by human life is a natural phenomenon.

Besides, if spewing CO2 into the atmosphere is causing so much trouble, all we need to do is invent a bunch of machines that extract the CO2 out and convert it to O2 and solid carbon compounds. Oh wait, we already have those... they're called trees.

2003-04-08 05:38:18 PM
This study shows temperture varied more widely thn previously believe nd that today's temps, in context, are no all that high.

What it doesn't show is that today's warming trends are not due at least in part to human activity.

2003-04-08 05:39:28 PM
M1ahof course, the middle ages were also called the dark ages for the europ3nz

I doubt it. Can you quote any contemporary 'pean source back then who looked over the state of things and said something like "These few hundred years are the Dark Ages"?

2003-04-08 05:42:47 PM
Milo Tilankovic at work.

2003-04-08 05:44:10 PM
Mutated-Snoopy, it is too late. New Zealand's troops have already mounted their noble sheep steeds, and are galloping into Antarctica as we speak. Check out this satalite photo!

2003-04-08 05:45:01 PM
Mutated-Snoopy, thanks for the cow flatulence reminder. I've always wondered if past bison and aurochs herds put out less or more methane when I read about that, but environmental activists wannabes I've asked don't like the question and answer a different one I didn't ask instead when I bring it up.

2003-04-08 05:45:17 PM
Who funded this study? What researchers were involved? "About to be published" means it may not have been reviewed yet. The end of the article significantly weakens the findings of the paper, I'm curious as to where this group took their measurements. The Earth's temp being higher during the Middle Ages is unrelated to how quickly the temperature is now climbing. Does the Earth's temperature fluctuate? Yes. But seeing such a significant increase over less than 2 centuries is cause for alarm.
