Sad indeed. This cartoon was an old favorite of mine, and a current favorite of my daughter.

*sniff*

2003-04-08 11:55:10 AM

And its french?

2003-04-08 11:56:04 AM
Back when I was a kid we had to walk through ten miles of snowdrifts to read a Babar book.

2003-04-08 11:57:39 AM

2003-04-08 11:59:57 AM

babar promotes imperialism, colonialism and a few other assorted -isms that i can't think of right now.

Horton Hears a "Boo-Hoo".

2003-04-08 12:03:03 PM
The elephant who would be king.
I always thought they were boring, like the Bernstein Bears and that stupid little furry Paddington Bear...boring shiat. Even Captain Kangaroo was more exciting than that stuff. But, he made more of his life than the morans (I still get a kick out of that guy) who make cartoon porn out of the Simpsons.

2003-04-08 12:04:16 PM
Going to miss the old boy. My willy and his trunk had a lot in common.

2003-04-08 12:04:16 PM
Is that two "B"s or one "B"?

2003-04-08 12:05:45 PM
Anna Nicole Smith wasn't 99, was she?

2003-04-08 12:06:12 PM
Babar was not as good as Curious George, and neither was as good as Dr. Seuss, but they were still a good read.

2003-04-08 12:07:28 PM
Was he accidently stepped on by Clifford the Big Red Dog ?

2003-04-08 12:09:25 PM
RIP :(

2003-04-08 12:13:03 PM
Pauvre Babar...

2003-04-08 12:13:20 PM
Now that Babar is dead, Peter Potamus is king.

Long live the King

2003-04-08 12:13:44 PM
I always liked Babar when I was a kid....

2003-04-08 12:13:59 PM
So the husband said to his wife "you remind me of an elephant?"

2003-04-08 12:16:35 PM
Its a sad year for kids of the early 80's. First Mister Rogers, and now the Babar lady. Who's next? Big Bird?

2003-04-08 12:18:02 PM
Alas, poor Babar. I knew him well, Henrietta.

2003-04-08 12:18:10 PM
M. Emmett: Tell me, Mr. Babar, is that one 'B' or two?
Fletch: One. B-A-B-A-R.
M.Emmett: That's two.
Fletch: Yeah, but not, you know, right together.

2003-04-08 12:18:17 PM
Babar was a cross dresser?

2003-04-08 12:18:24 PM
Goatman - You've been *ahem* missing?!?! Is that somehow related to your .1?

"Big farking deal. I'm dead and bigger news."

2003-04-08 12:22:09 PM
Sad, sad, sad. I also shared the wonder of Babar along with my brother and sister. It somehow was really touching.

2003-04-08 12:25:47 PM
Next I'm going to hear that Tintin is dead, too.

2003-04-08 12:26:04 PM
You mean that gay cartoon that comes on HBO at like 5:00 in the morning.

2003-04-08 12:28:48 PM
Am I the only one who misunderstood the strapline for the article?

I thought the books were inspired by a real life elephant, which had then survived for 99 years.

the first paragraph of the article still makes sense if you think cecile was the name of the original elephant, it's only in the second one that things start getting surreal.

Doc: That's an interesting name, Mr...?
Fletch: Babar.
Doc: Is that with one B or two?
Fletch: One. B-A-B-A-R.
Doc: That's two. Fletch: Yeah, but not right next to each other, that's what I thought you meant.
Doc: Isn't there a children's book about an elephant named Babar.
Fletch: Ha, ha, ha. I wouldn't know. I don't have any.
Doc: No children?
Fletch: No elephant books.

2003-04-08 12:29:28 PM
LarsThorwald.....very good with the Fletch reference. 'Ya beat me to it.

Nice "Hitchcockian" name, BTW.

Curse my metal body, I wasn't fast enough!

2003-04-08 12:36:23 PM
I'm surprised there hasn't been a class action suit against the publisher.

No elephant, not even a baby one, can ride a horse.

2003-04-08 12:37:08 PM
Hey, can someone post the Fletch conversation again?

2003-04-08 12:37:25 PM
does anyone have that Fletch quote?

2003-04-08 12:38:41 PM
Hey, can someone post about whether someone has the Fletch quote?

2003-04-08 12:39:21 PM
If I were a woman, I wouldn't want to be known as "the one who inspired Babar". :P

2003-04-08 12:44:52 PM
I could've sworn I once went out with the inspiration for Babar. She didn't look that old and had a GREAT personality...
