It isn't the time bomb you think. Currently there are MORE men of legal marrying age in China than men. Right now, the legal age of marriage in China is 20 for women and 22 for men. By lowering the age for women to 19 would almost eliminate the 24 million gap. Eventually, China intends to lower the age for women to as low as 18, which would create a surplus of brides.

This is one of those non-stories that the US likes to use for propaganda purposes.

The truth is a typical marriage in China is between older men and young women, and has been for thousands of years. Since each year over 7 million girls are born, the marriage age gap is completely eliminated with just a 4 year gap in ages between marriage partners...which is already the case. When the policy was first started in 1979, a prominent Western sociologist opinined that China might have to start a war some time in the future in order to soak up all of the extra men that would be born. With 24 million extra men, now would seem a good time to start that war.

It is a little mind boggling to think of the scale and scope of this situation though.


China has always had a shortage of women because of the widespread us of concubinage. Most rich men have at least two wives, very weathly men used to have several wives, and the emperor sometimes had thousands.

As for the present, this story is a perfect example of schadenfreude among the Western media. Each year, there are over 7 million women born in China. The legal marriage age right now is 2 years older for men (22) than women (20). That means that RIGHT NOW, there are actually MORE women of legal marrying age in China than men. The Chinese government intends to eventually lower the age for women to as low as 18. That would completely eliminate "the gap" by adding an additional 28 million women to the marriage pool.

Young lovers would have to wait until her boyfriend reached 22, but that it the sacrifice for "true love" in China. Really, this isn't much of an issue because most marriages in China have always been between younger women and older men.

Local Siberian Russians are fairly indifferent, but the further you get to Moscow, the more the media makes a big ruckus about a foreign invasion.

Of course The Tiananmen Square Masacre happened. The current government even recently honored the man whose death (and lack of appropriate acknowledgement by the government) prompted the original protest. China still has a lot of problems, but they are a completely different country than 20, 30, 40, or even 10 years ago. They have lifted over 600 million people out of poverty and right now is the best time to be an average Chinese person in their 5,000 year history in terms of both standard of living and personal freedom.

First, stop repeating yourself. You've said the same thing in like 5 posts.

Second, younger women and marrying older men is not unique to China. Sociologists take this into account when doing studies like this.

Third, you keep forgetting that in those 4 years when 7 million girls are born, something like 10 million boys are born.

There will always be too many damn men. China is farked - violent crime will increase, particularly violent crime against women, who will end up being kidnapped and/or sold into marriage. BTW, those things are happying over there already, along within India, which has the same problem.

Frankly, female infanticide and sex selective abortion would exist in China even without the one-child only policy. India is a perfect example - no limits on the number of children and they still have a huge and growing gender imbalance.

And in the end, it will be always the women who suffer - their rights are not going to increase just because there are less of them.

Speaking from first hand experience? even you dated chinese americans, I don't think chinese chinese and chinese americans behave identically.

I have never seen one of those mail order russian bride marriages work. Usually they end badly with a couple of big russians from the local immigrant community helping mover her stuff out whether it is hers or not. A friend of mine has a hot vietnamese bride but who knows if it will last. She acts like she loves him but I say wait until the five years is up, then we'll see. Yeah I'm cynical but that comes from observation.

It might be a bit higher, but the numbers often thrown around by the US media (as high as 30 million by 2030) are based more on anti-Chinese propaganda than any scientific survey. Still, lowering the legal age of marriage for women by 2 years (to 18) and increasing it by 1 year for men (to 23) would create a surplus of 5 million brides. Most reports say that would never be necessary and that a 4 year gap in the legal age of marriage would effectively negate the gender gap. Besides, compared to the huge population, 24 million is not a big as it sounds. In China, only losers would have a hard time finding a wife, so it really upgrades the gene pool.
