Considering most hiccups are caused by things like indigestion, laughing too hard, being nervous, etc. trying to eat things that might cure indigestion or help you relax wouldn't be too strange. Nobody expects a hiccup inducing brain tumour.

Yes, but no one expects hiccups to last for 3 farking years either. The fact that no one for 3 years said, "Let's do an MRI" is not exactly a ringing endorsement for socialized medicine and the medical community as a whole.

True "Cool Bro" Story:

We frequently spend Christmas in Mexico. Late one evening we were sitting at a restaurant right on the beach in Zihuatanejo (La Playa Ropa). A chick, just like the one in gorgor's link went jiggling, giggling by; naked and giant. No doubt as drunk as the skinny guy who was chasing her. Old Ahab there did harpoon that great white whale just down the beach from us. That might have been one of my better Christmas days I've ever had.

Of course over in the US you can go to a strip mall and get a MRI as opposed to waiting 6 months to a year in the UK.

And what passes for an MRI in Europe is a magnet and a sheet of paper. And I heard you have to wait until your dead to get it.

Oh really? Well, I live in the U.S. and have the best medical insurance available. I had burning pain in my feet for ten years. I went from doctor to doctor and they told me it was everything from athlete foot to a psychological problem. It got so bad I wondered how long I could stand the pain before I put myself out of my misery. I threatened to sue for healthcare rationing if they did not send me to neurologist. I did that after a five minute Google search of my symptoms said it could be peripheral neuropathy. Guess what. I diagnosed myself correctly. The neurologist asked me why it took so long to get to her. After hearing my story she said it's not unusual. Twenty four hours on nortriptyline and I was pain free.

Bet your ass I made appointments so I could personally tell my doctors face to face what incompetent pieces of shiat they were. I also informed them of this amazing thing called Google.

It doesn't matter where you live. Doctors are lazy, arrogant and quick to tell you that any problem that can't be solved in a ten minute visit is psychological. At least with socialized medicine everyone gets to be treated. In America you're just farked. And don't argue with me. I've worked in healthcare. I've seen it firsthand, day after day.

I've never had hiccups that won't go away. All of my life, every time I start to hiccup, I get about 2 or 3 in before I realize I'm doing it and poof, they're gone. The instant I realize it, they stop. I've always been baffled by this apparently universal quest seeking ways to stop doing it. I realize that I'm the weird one but still, you're all weird to me.

dude. you don't have the best insurance available if you had to harass someone to get a neurologist referral.
I can go see a neurologist tomorrow if I feel like it.

Yes - they want to do both of those three things when they really should be happy with all two of them.

Actually, you'd be surprised. Doctors really don't like being told what to do.
"I think I need to see a neurologist"
"Well, I think you don't, here's some (insert psycho drugs here) for your obsession with your health. Referral denied."

And then when you finally get to a neurologist after 4+ months, because your symptoms didn't go away, bam, brain tumor.
