After reading the article I'm going to guess he didn't roll it but slid upright into a ditch, hitting a small tree and making a little dent that will buff right out for only $2,000.

In Massachusetts a drunk guy took the town's fancy firetruck out for a joyride to show off for a girl and totalled it. Insurance covered $350,000 and town voters approved $300,000 more to cover the difference between a used and new truck. (latest story)

Did he have a CDL?

Probably not.

In fact, how many places require someone who is going to drive a fire truck to have more education or experience than some lousy course?

I think it's bullshiat that truck drivers, bus drivers, even chauffeurs need to have a special license to drive their vehicles, while Firemen and ambulance drivers can get away with some shiatty, minor course. These people are going to be driving a hell of a lot more dangerously and recklessly than a truck driver, and have none of the experience or training.

Anyone notice the ad "Secret to white teeth" with the black-lighted scary teeth pic on the sidebar?

Anyhow.

And FirstNational -- In Indiana you just have to have an Emergency Vehicle Operation Certification (EVOC) which is just taking the ambulance, fire engine, hearse around a course of traffic cones.

I 1000% agree with this. As a Paramedic/EMT/Vol Firefighter over the past 20 years, I have seen people go from driving a car to an engine bigger than a school bus with about 6 hours of classroom training, and NO behind the wheel

We absolutely need to require at least a behind the wheel EVOC course to go along with the CEVO. A CDL may be asking a bit much for volunteers, but for career or officers, without a doubt, I agree to it!

This happens. An acquaintance's dad was a firefighter. Made it to Lt., and would've made captain had he wanted the job. He was a sober, staid, solid member of the community. Never had an accident in his own vehicles... but rolled 2 fire trucks on their side over the span of his 25-year+ career.

Color me unsurprised.

FTFA: In an effort to eliminate this problem, a motion was made by Councilman Thomas Peaden "that the fire trucks would not leave the station unless dispatched by Jackson County." The motion passed unanimously.

Wow... I guess that cuts down on training, going to dinner, community events, etc.

I'd guess that nobody on the town council has ever been on a fire department.

The vehicle is insured by the city, but there is a $1,000 deductible. If the repairs turn out to be more than $1,000, this will end up costing the city of Grand Ridge

Is it just me or does this make no sense at all?

FTA The vehicle then began to lean to the left and struck a pine tree, causing an estimated $2,000 worth of damage to the left side of the vehicle.

"It has been about a week or two since the vehicle was last taken out," Wright said in a phone interview Saturday. "And with it being so cold, we had just put some antifreeze in the truck. But (the antifreeze) doesn't do any good without running the vehicle and letting it circulate."

Someone needs to explain the adjective "anti" to the mayor.

On the insurance thing, for those of you who do not understand, the city is the insurer and is the entity that will pay the insurance claim. At least that's the way it reads to me.

The first thousand comes from the fire department, anything over that is paid by the city.

I don't get it either. I couldn't run because I agree with only part of each parties platform-and would not win without party support. How do these idiots keep getting elected? Politicians tend to be the lowest of all life forms.

I wonder if this guy will get re-elected. Probably-his opponent will also be a politician.

Son of Florida paramedic here...

In Florida you have to take a 16 hour EVOC in order to drive an abulance. This includes behind the wheel training. On top of that, you're not allowed to actually speed (I think 10 over is acceptable) and it helps when everyone is MOVING THE FARK OUT OF THE WAY due to your siren and lights.

The only way I could see this being dangerous is when people do not move out of the way, and it that case it is their fault, not the paramedics'.

Also, most Florida medics are rednecks and are better-than-average drivers, as most rednecks have been driving their daddy's truck around the back roads since they were 10.

Being a small town mayor, getting a kick and all that.

But seriously, taking it out for a drive to circulate antifreeze? The mayor was just being a prick, he knew about the council's motion to restrict when the truck can be driven. And god dammit, nobody can tell him that he can't drive the city's equipment.

According to the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 all states must comply with standards when issuing driver's licenses.

A driver must have a CDL if operating a vehicle with a GVWR of 26,000 pounds or more.

So the question is:

Does Florida not comply with the law or is there some exemption specifically codified for fire equipment? I would say a large portion of them are have GVWR of more than 26,000 pounds.

Does anybody know what the truck in the article was so we can look it up?
