2010-01-09 08:37:35 PM
Well, at least it wasn't Colma county. That could've been a harbinger of the zombie apocalypse.

2010-01-09 08:37:53 PM
Good thing that didn't happen in the bay area.

2010-01-09 08:37:59 PM
As long as those from Muskogee are safe, all is well.

What's orange and looks good on a hippy?
Fire
How do you stop a hippy from screaming?
Shoot him again
Why couldn't the life guard rescue the hippy?
He was too far out man.
Where do you hide something from a hippy?
Under the soap.

no tremors in Oaktown since yesterday afternoon. Certainly nothing like a 6.5.

I am ok in Atlanta.

Just letting everybody know.

6.5 is nothing, I don't get out of bed for anything below a 7

(it's a log scale, every full digit you go up is 10x as powerful as the previous, so a 7.0 is 10x as strong as a 6.0.

And if my math isn't rusty, a 7.0 is 5x as strong as a 6.5).

Why hasn't Obama sent FEMA in yet? It's all his fault!

How can you tell a hippie has been staying at your house?

He's still there.

We has a couple of small ones in Sonoma yesterday - EVERYBODY PANIC!

It is a bit disconcerting when your apartment building starts moving however. It's almost even more disconcerting when you are used to it.

No earthquakes at all during Bush, now one already during Obama's term, he isn't keeping us safe from earthquakes!

We should impeach him. America cannot stand for this.

In middle of buying property up there, so getting a kick, etc.

My mom has lived in southern Oregon for about 4 years and has never been in a quake before. She called me in the middle of this quake (I live in the Bay Area) and said, "Uh, honey, what does an earthquake feel like?" I told her a decent quake would feel like one or more large trucks driving right past her front door, but without the noise. She said, "Past my door. How about through my door? OK, now I'm scared."

From her later, calmer description, it sounded like a pretty respectable shaker.

Holy crap, check out the underwater topology on Google Earth for the epicenter of that. There's a 1,200' underwater cliff along there, and a huge failure of it right by the epicenter.

Enter coordinates 40.6702-124.6303.

Global warming will make large earthquakes disappear by 2035. That's grabbed your attention now hasn't it? The graph above shows the number of earthquakes of magnitude 7 and above each year since 1940 together with moving averages over 5 year and 15 year spans and the linear regression line for the 15 year moving average. It clearly shows a decline in large earthquakes. If this trend was to continue there would be no large earthquakes above magnitude 7 by 2035.
