it's odd too, considering how puritanical the rest of the state is when it comes to 'sin' taxes. the liquor control board is essentially a socialist organization designed to maximize profits for the state while patronizing the local churches with the illusion of controlling drinking. But when it came to gambling, the churches got shut out of the discussion. Or rather, any objections they had were largely ignored.

Do I get to drink for free in PA casinos? Where are the good ones? This could be relevant to my interests, especially if it cut a few hours out of the drive to Atlantic City.

Hell, even my local Indian casino (Tulalip) doesn't hand out free drinks. The first time I went there, I asked the cocktail waitress for a Coors Light. When she came back, I handed her a dollar tip.

"Um....that will be $3," she said.

My wife and I went to AC once. I went up to a slot machine, promptly lost $20 and then said "what now?"

The only thing I really enjoyed was the Ripley's Believe-It-Or-Not Museum. And my wife won $50 so we ate at the buffet but the sight of a morbidly obese octogenarian loading up on roast beef with a plate rested on her gunt made me lose my appetite.

Lots of shopping in AC, an IMAX theatre, a couple of decent comedy clubs, and in the summer there's always the beach. Waaaaay more than PA casinos. I've been to Mt. Airy Casino and it's just awful. My friends & I were there on a Saturday afternoon a few months ago and we were the youngest people there. We were playing the penny slots and just cracking ourselves up when we got shushed by the wrinkle monsters surrounding us. Somebody actually shushed us because we were having fun at a casino.

And it's out in the boondocks with only the buffet & 2 restaurants to choose from inside. Nothing else to do in the area.

And you know they'll just blow through that money and need to raise taxes on something else.

My state (WA) recently increased liquor taxes as a "band-aid" for dealing with our deficit.

No.

You have to go to the special "liquor casino" if you want hard alcohol or wine, or one of the independent "beer distributor casinos" if you want beer. But the selection will be poor and it will cost twice what you'd pay in Maryland.
