SilentStrider: Well, calling it by its more accurate name, "global climate change" might help things make a little more sense.

Except that there hasn't been a period of history where the climate wasn't changing.

That's where people look at you sideways, and ask "So?"

People seem to forget that when you warm something, volatility increases and volume expands. We get our cold weather mostly from the Arctic, so I'm not surprised that we are seeing this occurrence as the warming Arctic increases the range of affected areas. Not to mention that aside from the US, many places experienced record highs.

People who don't believe in global warming, especially based on 1-2 years of local temperature data, are idiots.

Abstruse: Lionel Mandrake: If there's a heatwave next summer - just one, anywhere - will you douchebags suddenly be convinced that global warming is a fact?

They didn't this past summer. 115+ degree highs for 3 weeks straight, 100+ degree highs for 3 MONTHS straight here in Austin. We broke records. Like, all of them.

Sounds similar to what we had in Northeast Ohio... around '86 or '88 or something. Over 90 consecutive days over 90 degrees. (Things don't get as hot up at the 42nd parallel) Hottest summer in over 100 years of recording temps, including up to 2009.

Back then, it was because of El Nino. You can't use El Nino as an election platform, though.

Global warming is about average global temperature over time. It is neither supported by hot summers nor contradicted by cold winters.

Silly liberal commie-fag, anecdotes are far more important than data. Data is for socialists and queers.

You clearly didn't even read the extremely slanted article.

Mister Peejay: Except that there hasn't been a period of history where the climate wasn't changing.

Fine. Add "anthropogenic" to it and it's more accurate.

Also, since the raising of the Panama Isthmus about three million years ago (which is significant because it established the current dominant climate), this is, in fact, the fastest rate of change recorded in all the temperature proxies we've got (save for the Siberian forests, which is odd; that data doesn't agree with any of the other proxies).

Abstruse: Hey Subby, did you forget about the worst SUMMER in over 100 years we've had as well? Because, living in Texas, I sure as fark didn't forget 2 1/2 months straight of 115+ degree highs.

Yup. A bit east of Austin, and I saw 100+ every single farking day between June 7 and August 28. I thought I'd accrued enough karma points not to be looking at lows in the high teens these next few nights.

(I don't care that climate and karma do not work that way)

nemisonic: Balmy 29F in New Orleans over the weekend.... Texas and Florida citrus crops in danger... WARMING!

And it's 47 degrees in friggin' Alaska. High pressure over the Arctic, associated with unusually warm temperatures there, is pushing all the cold Arctic air down south. The cold air has to go somewhere.

Belief doesn't mean caring.

So the climate is changing. So what? Assuming that it is actually due to man (which is a very arrogant assumption - the climate didn't stop changing just because we showed up) then why should we do anything about it? We have already significantly altered the planet with our city-building and grand-scale landscaping and farming. Even the area surrounding the planet is not safe from us, we have littered the very skies above the atmosphere with all manner of satellites that perform many tasks, from the awe-inspiring to the mundane.

So, I ask, why stop now?

Abox: Global warming is about average global temperature over time. It is neither supported by hot summers nor contradicted by cold winters.

Yea, but if we get the really cold winters to balance out the really hot summer, we can claim that global temperatures are steady.

Suck it science!

I remain somewhat skeptical, of proposed climate change policy mostly, not so much the science. But these articles need to stop. They just increase the global dumb in the thermodumbnamics system, leading to mega hurricanes of stupid.

In Seattle this year, we broke our record for highest temperature on a given day. By almost 9 degrees. Our average temperature for the summer was almost 7 degrees higher than ever before. That is insane. Can a denier please explain that for me?

One of the main predictions of global warming is that the UK will end up much much colder, as the gulf stream shift south. So "warming" for Britain will = frozen hell.

It's a cult driven by people with diagnosable cases of eco-anxiety. Not only are people spewing CO2, but the CO2 is going the end the world. Just like species loss wasn't going to kill a species, it was going to kill the keystone species. Nuclear wasn't going to destroy a city, it was going to cause nuclear winter.

Blah blah blah, the world is going to end. We get it.

Im sick of hearing about global warming. Regardless of whether it is happening or not...I've never understood why 1) the Earth must be with a constant reference range of temperatures and 2) why, after going though an several ice ages and even a period, at its existence, where it was essentially molten lava (Liquid hot magma? depending on whether you're a doctor evil fan) why we cant just allow the earth to counter ill effects the way nature is so accustomed to doing.

The Bad Astronomer: Well, that's only because some people just don't seem to get that global warming does mean catastrophic weather that includes temporary bitter cold in many places not accustomed to it. And we have to keep saying it, because, as we've learned from the deniers, repetition means truth.

Yeah - you just keep repeating that, don't you? You (the "non-deniers") really do keep repeating that.

Well, that's only because some people just don't seem to get that global warming does mean catastrophic weather that includes temporary bitter cold in many places not accustomed to it. And we have to keep saying it, because, as we've learned from the deniers, repetition means truth.

Because you say so?

Where I live it has been colder the last few years than it has been in the last 20, but it has been about the same as it has been over the last 100 years. So in my part of the world you can't say we're not accustomed to it.

I don't doubt (or deny) that we may be affected by climate changes, but I think we'll manage somehow.

2010-01-08 01:53:54 AM
Okay, the massive snow fall I could associate with warming causing more moisture to be available for greater snow fall. Makes direct sense once you get over the curb.

But this massive dry cold front is a real different beast. It really does look like the product of cooling. However I'd have to calculate the specific heat of a unit of snow making 30 degree air and a unit of this super dry 16 degree air to see if the amount of available heat energy contained is less.

2010-01-08 01:54:45 AM
Ice age, global warming, whatever. When China gets a taste for feef, the world as we know it will end; the Earth will be covered with massive amounts of cow manure, and we will all die of methane induced warming.

Beef: it's a civilization killer!

thenateman: Step 1: Disregard your own perceptions.

Like the film projectionists' cult, which claims that people aren't actually gallivanting on the screen, and that it's actually a series of still pictures being switched out at 32 frames per second? Or the opthalmalogists' cult, which claims that when you wiggle a pencil between your fingers, it does not actually turn into rubber?

Or maybe, just maybe, anecdotal, local, or perceptual
information is of limited value in making observations about the world as a whole. And maybe, just maybe, whoever let you pass your high school science classes ought to be shot for letting such an ignorant asshole through the education system.

2010-01-08 01:55:03 AM
But Stephen Dorling, of the scandal-hit University of East Anglia's school of environmental sciences, remained adamant that the weather should not be used as evidence against climate change.

Um, ah, uh, okay, if you say so doc

Yes just like repetition from people saying the planets warming and we are the cause then saying anyone that doesnt believe is just ignorant without addressing any of their proof.

And this winter is not nearly as cold as the ones I remember as a kid, weather is cyclical just admit it and move on with your life while trying to stop pollution without forcing us all to give up gas.

Also since he wants people to look at long term trends why wont they address the trends that say cooling has slowed down dramatically but they keep moving the bar to try and show it hasnt.
