Well, that's only because some people just don't seem to get that global warming does mean catastrophic weather that includes temporary bitter cold in many places not accustomed to it. And we have to keep saying it, because, as we've learned from the deniers, repetition means truth.

Weather != climate

What Fark needs is newer jokes, maybe like a "pull my finger" or "Knock, knock" theme.

They have a circular argument. Warmer = global warming. Colder = global warming. They base their case on speculation and "experts" like Al Gore. Oh by the way, don't forget to invest in "green stocks".

I got 3/4 through this 2nd paragraph before I realized it was the same as the first. Can't brain today. Have the dumb.

I'm in Seattle, WA right now way up North and it's 47f.

/warming is real
//air conditioning just kicked on

Well, calling it by its more accurate name, "global climate change" might help things make a little more sense.

Wait. Worst winters in 100 years? I'd LOVE to see the data that backs that up.

I suppose that this would be as good as time as any to note that The Bad Astronomer was a major topic of my family's Christmas dinner. The topic came up because my father and I are both fans, and we decided that it's quite likely that my sister was roommates with a girl TBA dated in college.

Because people not only can't think in a timespan of more than 30 years or so, they also can't relate to anything that is bigger than their immediate environment. Like, they can't relate, man.

Silly liberal commie-fag, anecdotes are far more important than data. Data is for socialists and queers.

"He added that while Siberia, the UK and parts of the US were very cold, other areas including Alaska, Canada and the Mediterranean were warmer than usual. But China faces its worst winter in 20 years, with temperatures down to -43C."

Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to read the article and explode it's bullshiat first paragraph.

Going swimming now. 58 degrees here in Oregon. Must be all the worst winter in 100 years bullsh*t.

mediablitz: Wait. Worst winters in 100 years? I'd LOVE to see the data that backs that up.

Well, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had this to say about 2009:

*Global land and ocean annual surface temperatures through October are the fifth warmest on record, at 0.56 °C (1.01 °F) above the long-term average.

*NOAA scientists project 2009 will be one of the 10 warmest years of the global surface temperature record, and likely finish as the fourth, fifth or sixth warmest year on record.

* The 2000-2009 decade will be the warmest on record, with its average global surface temperature about 0.54 °C (0.96 °F) above the 20th Century average. This will easily surpass the 1990s value of 0.36 °C (0.65 °F).

* Ocean surface temperatures (through October) were the sixth warmest on record, at 0.47 °C (0.85 °F) above the 20th century average.

* Land surface temperatures through October were the fifth warmest on record, at 0.80 °C (1.44 °F) above the 20th century average.

Hey Subby, did you forget about the worst SUMMER in over 100 years we've had as well? Because, living in Texas, I sure as fark didn't forget 2 1/2 months straight of 115+ degree highs.

The Bad Astronomer: Holy Haleakala! Who was that? And being a dinner conversation topic will now be added to my resume.

My father had given me Death from the Skies and we were discussing it (he's a big fan of the blog). Your name came up, and my sister did a WAH? double-take. Her name is Ronda, and she was roommates with a girl named Sue at UVA. This would have been around 82-83-84-ish. Anyway, Sue was hanging out with a guy with your name, and I guess my sister hung out at your house/apartment some. After a quick Google, my sister thought you were the same person. Especially if you had a toothpaste-colored car.

So you're e-famous! Not to mention a part of the VictoryCabal family Christmas.

I absolutely love the argument "It is cold outside, therefore global warming isn't occurring".

Coming from the people that said "Except for 9/11, Bush kept us safe".

As I understand it, here in North America an unusually big arctic air mass moved south. Presumably areas of the arctic had that air replaced from somewhere warmer and are now warmer than usual.

It's called "weather". Weather is only influenced by climate. Plan for the weather, not the climate, or the day-by-day fluctuations will reliably ruin your plans.

2010-01-07 11:19:03 PM
Heat = energy. You put more energy into a cycle, you amplify the effects. So yeah, if such a thing as global warming is occurring, you're going to get higher highs and lower lows.

Amazing how the headline resolves the contradiction it plaintatively tries to point out.

Can we pass a new Fark rule that you can't submit global warming articles unless you can demonstrate a basic understanding of thermodynamics?

I turned the heater way up, so my house is really hot. I have no idea what the weatherman on TV is going on about, it isn't 20 degrees, it is more like 90!

O. M. G. I remember Ronda! She was dating Gordon, I think, right? Tell her I said hi! And yeah, it was Sue, but I'll decline posting her last name here on Fark. But tell her I wound up marrying a different woman who lived at Lambeth... :)

Mentat: Can we pass a new Fark rule that you can't submit global warming articles unless you can demonstrate a basic understanding of thermodynamics?

Thermo (hot) dynamics (like, chemistry). That's like when the two main characters on a TV show should totally get together, and it keeps looking like they will, but then they don't, because it would ruin the tension on the show, and the thermo-dynamics of the two are just, like, compelling.

And both of the characters are hot, it goes without saying. I watch thermodynamic shows all the time, so I know quite a bit about it.

I was going to compliment subby for the trolltastic headline, but it was lifted straight from the article...holy fark people are stupid.

If there's a heatwave next summer - just one, anywhere - will you douchebags suddenly be convinced that global warming is a fact?

Somehow I doubt it.

But, "brrrr, it's sure been cold lately" is enough to "prove" that global warming is a fraud.farking morans....

Global climate change is raising the Gibbs Free Energy quotient by increasing the enthalpy of the system. That exaggerates extreme weather at both ends of the temperature spectrum. Its unfortunately the population is scientifically illiterate, but that's why you aren't being allowed to make policy anymore. When you decide to put on your mental big boy pants, you might get to peek in the window.

They didn't this past summer. 115+ degree highs for 3 weeks straight, 100+ degree highs for 3 MONTHS straight here in Austin. We broke records. Like, all of them.

Many people don't get it. They point to the fact that there are unusually cold temperatures in some parts of the country and exclaim, "This is proof that global warming is a myth!"

It's not that simple.

Here in Las Vegas, meteorologists have said that since they started recording temperatures here in the early 1900s, 9 of the 10 warmest years on record by average temperature have occurred since 2000.

You're one of the people who don't get it because you look at it too shallow. It has nothing to do with the temperature in any particular city or state, or any region. It has to do with an overall average temperature shift of a degree or two over the entire planet.

That may not sound significant, but it's enough to cause the melting of ice in far north America, which is driving polar bears toward extinction, and it's enough to create more hurricanes in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, which end up hitting the U.S. mainland.

You need to educate yourself, son. You can't dismiss Global Warming altogether simply because there is snow on the ground. That's ignorant.
