Surely there can be a happy medium? Locking someone up at great cost for 10 years does not seem a reasonable benefit to society in return for the theft of an $80 piece of meat. Dude might as well have raped a kid for that kind of sentence.

What they should do is specify a sentence (fine and/or jail time) for a given offense. Any time a person is convicted of an offense and has a prior conviction (in the past 10 years) of a similar or the same offense, their penalty is simply double what their sentence was the last time they were convicted. Now if your last offense was the 5th time and it was just over 9 years ago, your current conviction would be considered the 6th. Also, time spent incarcerated for any reason (even if completely unrelated) would not count toward the 10 years the offense remains on your record.

Shop lift once, 10 days in jail
On the 9th offense, that would be just over 7 years in jail)

I was going to say "Yeah probably because over half the SC population is black". But then I checked the Census and I gotta call bullshiat on 28.5%. It sure seems like a higher percentage than that, or did when I used to live there.

I understand all of it, but that's not the point. Let's say it was 9 $80 pieces of meat if that makes you feel better. Do you think his nine small-time offenses are worth the cost that 10 years of imprisonment are going to place on taxpayers? Can we afford to treat every serial shoplifter the same way? Personally, I think it's stupidly excessive.

Here I thought he was jerking it in the product area, completely different story from the headline than the story.

Why didn't they give him enough time the 8th time they caught him? Or the 7th? Sounds like a case to too many judges slapping him on the wrist until one of them finally got tired of his crap and actually smacked him down.
