Do you really need more than one F-15 to shoot down a commercial airliner?

10 bucks says the guy had a pet in the carry-on..
and the note said "please stop bothering me about my carryon"..

You NEVER leave your wingman. They have been flying in pairs since Eddie Rickenbacker.

Yes, you are right. An F-15 pilot could correct me, but I still think it would take only one to do the deed.

I really, really hope I never a big enough asshole in public to warrant the activation of military aircraft.

You always have a backup interceptor if the first one gets taken out.

Or has mechanical difficulties, since I'm pretty sure most airliners don't really have much air-to-air capability.

I wonder if your still allowed to say the word explosive in an airport if it refers to diarrhea.

One to fire the Sidewinder. The other to take a picture of him doing it. For the squadron scrap book, "What We Did on My Vacation," right next to the pics of the Asian hookers.

Never leave your wing man.

Oh, so "disturbing notes" are now the barometer for the complete pussification of America? But I barely had time to adjust to firecrotch as the new low!

alright so he's an idiot, retarded, selfish, and was released scott free?

I can understand if he wasn't up to any terror activities... but im sure scrambling to F-15s isnt cheap, I'm sure the time/energy of turning a plane around, and inconveniencing 100+ weary travelers is also high.

There are only two ways stupid people learn from their mistake, if you hit them in the wallet, or hit them in the face. Sounds like this guy got neither.

So F-15 pilots are like women going to bathroom?

No wonder my pick up lines get shot down so quick.

I'm hesitant about possible overreaction, but it depends on what this note actually said and what he actually did. Based on this article, who knows. If he made an actual threat, fark him. He wasn't charged, but at least make him pay for the cost of scrambling the jets.

FTA: The passenger, a 56-year-old man from Salem, Ore., was eventually released without being charged after he was questioned by the FBI.

...so then, was he let back onto the plane?

If he wasn't charged, then why should he pay? He didn't do anything to warrant it.

The guy's released in couple of hours, no charges. People spend more time getting processed through the local precinct for overdue library books.

I can't wait to hear about the flying waitress with a god complex who almost got a commercial jet BLOWN OUT OF THE FARKING SKY because she didn't get her ass kissed.

Did they open the bag and then run screaming in terror into the night?

Otherwise, no, it couldn't have been gorgor.

Hey, weird. Not only is Fark seemingly half a day behind, my greenlit article scheduled for two hours from now just got ungreenlit.

So a passenger wont put his bag down, so you shoot the plane out of the sky???

Seems like a little over reaction there...

Have you ever asked for something to drink.. like orange juice? Then you just might be a big enough asshole as recently posted here on fark. The flier doesn't have to be the ass... just the steward/ess.
Since he was released so quickly it might have been something as simple as a business laptop with something important on it that could cost him his job... note may have just stated as much. If asking for orange juice can make you a terrorist what DOESN'T make you one when the flight crew is retarded or high on a power trip?

Oh, so much this. I'm normally a very, very easy-going and nice person in real life (as opposed to TF), but I almost got into it with the last line of defense on some kind of flight in the last year, don't remember which one. I think it was over me potentially missing a connecting flight due to some airline ridiculousness and making a phone call while starting to taxi from the gate to let my employer know what was going on. She threatened to get the captain over my use of electronic devices which would surely cause the plane to implode in some kind of antimatter singularity and I was in no mood for douchery.

Of course, at the end of the flight, we both felt bad and apologized to each other, so I dunno...

What I want to know is, if the F-15 is close, does he use guns? The AF pilot that could shoot down an American airliner with guns is truly hardcore.

2010-01-07 01:25:37 AM
We now have the name of the passenger too, it was D. O. Guerrero.

And here's onboard camera footage uploaded via qik:

Other than, as others have noted, the standard practice of flying with a wingman, I can imagine that a "show of force" would be desirable (perhaps distracting or dissuading the troublemaker) and preferable to shooting down a civilian airliner.

/The Oregon Air National Guard uses F-15s? Really?

Why the fark should he put his bag down? Maybe he had medicine in there, or money. Maybe had had a book in there he wanted to read. Why the fark did the stewardess try to make him put it down?

The airline should pay for the jets scrambled AND reimburse him for the ticket AND give him a free first class ticket to whereever he was going in the first place.

"Show of force"??? What century do you live in?

Those F-15s didn't get within spitting distance of that airliner: It's way too close for accurate missile targeting, for one thing. They need at least five miles by what I've heard, and even a 757 would be a distant speck on the horizon at that range. Someone with more weapons-tech can correct me on distance; but Mr. Disturbing Note probably had no idea his plane was being shadowed by fighters till after the plane was on the ground.
